Regrann from @physicsfun - Poly-acrylamide Polymer Vanishing Act: these spheres of hydrophilic polymer have an almost identical index of refraction as that of water- thus when submersed they become invisible. Note the elasticity of these spheres from the way they bounce, while at the same time they refract their surroundings as a spherical lens. The super absorbent spheres start as hard crystals with a radius of 2mm and grow to 11mm when immersed in water. To start things off, it is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water. Lake Baikal is also the world’s deepest lake, with a maximum depth of 1,642 m (5,387 ft.). The records don’t stop there: the freshwater lake is also considered to be the planet’s oldest lake, having been created roughly 25 million years ago. Records aside, Lake Baikal is renowned for having incredibly clear and beautiful ice that attracts visitors in the wintertime. Regrann from @science - Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil is a gorgeous place that’s a geographical and meteorological oddity. These stark white sand dunes sit atop a layer of rock, making the whole place look like a typical desert. The weird part is that there is an intense rainy season, which floods the crevices between the dunes and creates these blue green lagoons. Why? The layer of rock underneath the sand doesn’t allow for the water to soak into the ground. There are even fish in these lagoons, one of which is the wolf fish that burrows into the mud and chills out there until the next wet season. A reconstruction of the reptile, discovered in Transylvania, is on display at the Altmühltal Dinosaur Museum in Denkendorf, Germany. It’s estimated the creature had a wingspan of 12 meters and stood 3.5 meters tall. The size of Dracula’s neck is comparable to the width of a full-grown man, according to the museum.
