my galaxy brained takes:

Leonard Nimoy never gets to play romantic leads despite being a very handsome man. also, despite how unsettling it is when weaponized as Spock, he has a lovely smile. Holmwood is the least sketched of the three suitors and needs somebody who can bring complexity and deep, immediate, fuckable charisma to a not very there part.

William Shatner is insane. He also loves playing deeply weird little men and likes making deeply weird choices. This is played off in Star Trek (and entirely forgotten in the public imagination) but this is a man who is given a plotline involving Captain Kirk having a mental breakdown, getting paranoid, or turning evil every couple episodes. Shatner would absolutely be down to play a guy weighing the pros and cons of handing the guy-who-eats-stuff a kitten to see if he would eat that stuff. shatner would also enjoy giving line readings that sound like beat poetry for the phonograph sections.

Deforest Kelley’s Bones is not only a doctor. he is also, crucially, a southerner. (source: him asking for a mint julep in that one episode where they all get high and go straight to their basest desires.) he is also the dark horse sexy one of the bunch. you need someone with an immense amount of charisma who can pull off country charm and there is only one of these guys who can do it.

was musing the other day that I can't think of a lot of Coward Characters who are women. I can think of female characters who are afraid, anxious, and conflict-averse, but not a lot who are really Cowards. my current hypothesis for why this might be is twofold: 1. if a man runs screaming and crying away from something the automatic response is "what a coward" but if a woman runs screaming and crying away from something the automatic response is "what a girl;" if you want a Coward Narrative about a woman then you have to put in extra legwork to try and make it not come across like she sucks because of her gender. 2. I think "cowardice" is seen as kind of the worst defect for the masculine gender role in a way it isn't for the feminine role. comparable sins against femininity are more about being un-loving and un-beautiful, and there are a lot more Narratives about female characters centered around those. basically what I'm saying is that we need more girlcowards and also probably more boycinderellas.

It’s so crazy that someone you love dying just turns into one humiliation ritual after another. Constantly explaining to people that they died. Filling out endless paperwork for years after. Phone call after phone call to organize what to do with the body and funeral arrangements. God forbid they died suddenly or didn’t have an ironclad will or it turns into even more of a bureaucratic nightmare. On top of it all, everything associated with dying is the most expensive things on planet earth. And through it all, if the grief doesn’t feel constantly suffocating, it creeps up on you at the worst moments until you’re pulled over on the side of the road, crying. And you’re expected to be back to normal a week later.
