“Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions. Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately ‘favouring’ the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time. In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows: “The talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.” In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ‘too much’ by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts.”

I do not agree with veganism as a moral standard. If it is your personal moral stance, that is fine. If you think humans eating meat is inherently immoral, I don’t want to deal with you, you’re hopeless. Vegan ideology behaves more like a sect of evangelical Christianity than a dietary choice.

Veganism is better for the environment, but claiming that it's a morally superior choice ignores cultural and economic factors that make people eat animal products.

It is not inherently better for the environment. That is the thing. When you begin trying to explain that local, sustainably sourced animal protein is better for the environment than imported plant proteins that are farmed 3,500 miles away using slave labor, they start tuning you out. Down is better for the environment than polyester stuffing, leather is better for the environment than pleather. We should work on making animal agricultural practices more sustainable instead of trying to shame everyone into eating plant products that are also farmed unethically and unsustainably.

saw a post of a person saying they used to be mad at climate activists but they get it now [after the heatwave] and they appreciate the effort now and encourage us to pick up the good work again and it's nice to see people admit to changing their mind and showing support but there's still a step missing. like they didn't consider themselves part of the solution, as if being a "climate activist" is a title you need to apply for or a job other people do for you. so many people seem to think they have no agency and it's heartbreaking in multiple different ways

#and very lonely #i realised last weekend when i was talking to my family about my climate anxiety #that they were trying to comfort me and show me support in my struggle #but that wasn't what i was asking. i wasn't asking for help with my emotions i was asking for help in tackling their cause #like that is what i wanted from that exchange #and i get it takes times for people to change their minds. i've seen people slowly changing their minds over the last few years #but it's so lonely waiting for people to arrive at the point of action where i am #and 7 am before a 9-hour day is to early to be thinking about this but it's better than wanting to cry in the middle of the office #*e
