Round 4, Week 1, Days 3 & 4
Days 3 & 4 are upon us and with them some of my favorite bands.
Hopefully they don’t lose. Also, one of these very bands will find themselves in the Quarter Finals. Fancy that.
1) Eminem (8) vs The Movielife (121)
This is a match between a skinny white guy and a band fronted by a skinny white guy. It’s also where I give Vinnie a hug because people fucking love Eminem.
Eminem is a rapper straight outta Detroit. He’s monopolized hip-hop at the Grammys, but everyone knows they suck anyway. People fucking love Eminem. He’s beat down Vacant Andys (10-1), Frank Zappa (13-3), and Coheed & Cambria (9-6). My favorite Eminem song... we’ll say is “Criminal”.
The Movielife are a Long Island pop-punk/melodic hardcore act whose fingerprints can be seen all over pop-punk today in bands like The Story So Far, Knuckle Puck, Four Year Strong, and Such Gold. They’ve hacked through The Jonbenet (9-1), Nothing (9-6), and Breaking Benjamin (11-5).
2) The Mars Volta (57) vs The Raconteurs (72)
This match is our closest ranked bout of the day, featuring two bands that grew out of other bands that are still in this competition!
The Mars Volta are a progressive/experimental rock band from El Paso, forming from the ashes of At the Drive-In. They have been more successful commercially, critically, and in this very tournament than fellow At the Drive-In spawn Sparta. They have beaten down New Politics (12-4), I Am the Avalanche (11-8), and Tilt (10-4). My favorite The Mars Volta song is “Intertiatic ESP”.
The Raconteurs are a Jack White (of The White Stripes) blues rock supergroup based in Detroit. People really like Jack White. They took down eatmewhileimhot! (14-2), Cap’n Jazz (9-7), and Millencolin (8-5). I have never voted for The Raconteurs.
3) Modest Mouse (25) vs Bouncing Souls (104)
This is a match of east vs west because that’s the best thing I can come up with.
Modest Mouse are an Issaquah, Washington based alternative/indie rock band. They just released a new album Strangers to Ourselves which I haven’t listened to yet. I should get on that. They’ve devoured Tides of Man (12-5), Gerard Way (12-5), and Emery (10-4). My favorite Modest Mouse song is “Guilty Cocker Spaniels”.
Bouncing Souls are a New Brunswick, NJ pop-punk/punk rock band. They like you mom and it’s no fad. They wanna marry her and be your dad. They’ve already taken down Dave Navarro (11-5), Paramore (7-6), and Chiodos (10-4). My favorite Bouncing Souls song is “True Believers“.
4) Brand New (40) vs Descendents (89)
This is the match that I will struggle most with all week. They’re both so good!
Brand New are a Long Island indie rock/emo act. They shroud themselves in mystery, almost never release new music, and are completely adored for this behavior. Brand new is a cult, and I’m sipping the Kool Aid. They’ve converted Blondie (11-2), Rush (11-3), and Foo Fighters (11-8). My favorite Brand New song changes, but right now I will say “Luca”.
Descendents are a Manhattan Beach, CA pop-punk/hardcore punk band. They were clear influences for The Movielife, Bouncing Souls, Brand New, and Blink-182. And that’s just bands that appear today. Milo Goes to College all day. They have nailed Tidemouth (11-0), Man Overboard (12-2), and The Anniversary (9-5). My favorite Descendents song is “Myage”.
1) Blink-182 (9) vs Desaparecidos (120)
Another match, another particularly difficult decision. This round could be the death of me.
Blink-182 is a pop-punk/alternative rock band from Poway, CA. They were my favorite band for years and led me down the rabbit hole that is punk rock. Thanks, Blink, for everything. They had fun at the expense of Emmure (12-3), Envy on the Coast (14-0), and More Than Life (18-1). My favorite Blink-182 song is, hmm, I’ll say “Voyeur”.
Desaparecidos are a Conor Oberst led indie rock/punk side project out of Omaha. Read Music/Speak Spanish is quite possibly in my Top 5 records of all-time. They have rallied against Mono (11-3), The Fall of Troy (8-5), and The Decemberists (6-5). My favorite Desaparecidos song is “Hole in One”. I always have to listen a second time.
2) Creedence Clearwater Revival (56) vs Anti-Flag (73)
This is a match of two bands who both have/had a lot to say about our political and social landscape, only separated by two-and-a-half decades, being on opposing sides of the country, and their style of music. So a lot.
Creedence Clearwater Revival hail from El Cerrito, CA despite sounding like they’re from the deep south. The only artist who sounds more distinctly American is Tom Petty, and that’s debatable. They have protested Archipelago (12-2), My Bloody Valentine (11-4), and All Time Low (14-2). My favorite CCR song is “Born on the Bayou”.
Anti-Flag are a crew of Pittsburgh politico-social punk rockers. They serve as the modern torchbearers of The Clash, a band the Anti-Flag wears all over their tattered sleeves. They usurped Dowsing (12-6), Garbage (10-5), and Jawbreaker (8-7). My favorite Anti-Flag song is “Sodom, Gamorrah, Washington D.C. (Sheep in Shepherd’s Clothing)”.
3) The White Stripes (24) vs Title Fight (105)
This is a battle of bands who started in garages, right? Jack White battles for the second time today. Which match seems like a bigger mismatch?
The White Stripes are a Detroit blues rock/garage rock band. You know who they are. They have defeated A Wilhelm Scream (11-4), Knuckle Puck (13-3), and Rites of Spring (14-3) just last week. My favorite Stripes song is “Fell in Love With a Girl”.
Title Fight is a pop-punk/melodic hardcore turned shoegaze/indie rock band from Kingston, PA. Shed was my #2 Album of 2011 and Floral Green was my #1 Album of 2012. Title Fight is legit. They have knocked out Riverboat Gamblers (11-3), Lorde (9-8), and Oberhofer (15-0). My favorite Title Fight song is “Leaf”.
4) Blur (41) vs Manchester Orchestra (88)
This is a battle of bands with prolific front men, though only Damon has another act standing. I guess it’s also a good England vs The States battle of something. Whichever.
Blur are a London indie rock/Brit-pop band. They recently released their first new album in 12 years, The Magic Whip. They’ve taken down The Front Bottoms (9-3), Everclear (10-8), and Single Mothers (7-3).
Manchester Orchestra are an Atlanta based indie/alternative rock band. Andy Hull’s solo act Right Away, Great Captain! and the Manchester/Kevin Devine group Bad Books were both eliminated in earlier rounds. They made it through We Were Skeletons (13-4), Kid Dynamite (10-5), and Modern Baseball (10-4). My favorite Manchester Orchestra song is “I’ve Got Friends”.
That wraps Week 1 and puts us 25% of the way through Round 4. Shit is getting real.
