i’m obsessed with this
and then, two months later....
🥺
I laughed so fucking hard at this
Boomers: All right, which one of you are going to clean up our messes?
Millennials: What? Gen Z: What?
Millennials: Seriously? We have like no power. You ensured that most of us were saddled with crippling debt, and haven’t raised the minimum wage enough to keep up with inflation so we can never pay back that debt, and have barely enough income to share an apartment with one or two roommates. We’re lucky if we can find one with a washer and dryer in-unit within our price range! We’re so tired and over-worked that we barely have enough energy to text a friend or post a selfie on facebook to let people know we’re still alive. How are we supposed to clean up your messes??
Boomers: Whatever. Entitled lazy Millennials. Always on your phone and posting selfies. Maybe if you worked harder you wouldn’t be in debt. Always wanting things handed to you on a platter. It’s not all about you you know. Generation Me amiright?
Millennials: *sigh*
Boomers: All right, how about you, Gen Z? You’re fresh, young, haven’t got much debt yet, you have your whole shining future ahead of you! You can be an inspiration to the world! How are you going to clean up our messes?
Gen Z: Um, we don’t really have any power either. Most of us aren’t even old enough to vote.
Boomers: Don’t put yourselves down! You’re the future! Put your young minds to work! Maybe you’ll think of solutions we’ve never even considered! Let us know what they are and we’ll implement them for you!
Gen Z: Um, ok. Stop destroying the environment by switching to clean energy instead of drilling for oil. Cut your carbon emissions to slow and eventually halt climate change. Raise minimum wage and give people health care so that we survive into adulthood and can help you clean this mess.
Millennials: I mean, these are the things we’ve been trying to tell them for years, but maybe they’ll actually listen to you since you’re the bright shiny future.
Boomers: What? We wouldn’t even consider doing any of that! What do you know about politics, economics, and the environment anyway? You’re not even old enough to vote! Where do you think the money for all these changes is going to come from? Money doesn’t grow on trees.
Gen Z: Tax the rich.
Boomers: What?! The rich worked hard for their money! It’s really hard pleasing your parents so that you can inherit the fortunes! They have a right to hoard away all the wealth so that no one else can have any.
Gen Z: Okay Boomer.
Boomers: WHAT? How dare you insult us! You know, you’d get a lot more respect if you would try and talk to us instead of being so dismissive of everything we say!
Gen Z: *SIGH*
it’s sad because it’s true

Thanks to a pair of a bionic gloves, this 80-year-old classical pianist can finally play the piano again. The maestro, João Carlos Martins, had lost dexterity in his hands due to aging and health complications. His face at being able to play piano again says it all. 🎶

Sometimes the future is pretty cool, actually.
Bro he’s so happy he’s crying and that’s making me cry he gets to play piano again after so long I
João Carlos Martins isn’t just any pianist, he’s one of the best pianists alive today. The dude has been playing piano for over 70 years (his career started when he was 11, but by the time he was 8 he had already won a contest playing Bach), and out of those 70, 56 years he spent playing with some kind of disability in his hands.
By the time he was 20 years old, João Carlos had already been invited by Eleanor Roosevelt to play at the Carnegie Hall, played with the biggest north american orchestras, and recorded the entire work of Bach for the piano. At the height of his skills, he could play 21 notes per second.
In 1965, at 24 years old, he suffered an accident during a soccer match which ended up causing an injury on his right elbow, damaging his ulnar nerve and atrophying 3 of his fingers. This caused him to stop playing for a year, and to play with difficulty until his 30s.
After long periods of physical therapy, but still with much difficulty, he returned to the stages and was received several positive reviews and was acclaimed by the public. However, he ended up developing a work-related musculoskeletal disorder, which forced him to stop playing again.
This wasn’t enough to make him give up on his musical career, and even with atrophied fingers and paralyzed hands, he still managed to play and record all basically of Bach’s work from 1979 to 1985, still being wildly popular despite his difficulties.
However, the worst would come in 1995: at 55 years old, during a robbery in Bulgaria, João Carlos was struck in the head with an iron bar, resulting in neurological sequelae which paralyzed his right arm. After a lot of physical and neurological therapy, he managed to move his right hand again enough to play the piano with both hands, but due to a worsening of his condition, at 58, he started to develop troubles not only moving his hand, but also speaking, so he had to go through another surgery. It didn’t seem like he would recover much movement in his hand after surgery, however, so he used the short time he had before his hand atrophied completely to record one last CD with both hands.
In 2001, at 61, he recorded the album Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, written by Maurice Ravel for Paul Wittgenstein, an austrian pianist who lost his right arm during World War 1.
His intention was to record 8 albums using only his left hand, however, his left hand developed a disease called Dupuytren’s contracture, causing his fingers to become permanently bent and contracted, as well as causing pain. He went through another surgery, this time in his left hand, but it didn’t prevent him from losing movement in his left hand, causing him to have to abandon the piano, seemingly for good.
This still didn’t keep him away from music, and after learning to conduct from a friend of his, he became a conductor in 2003, at 63 years old. Due to his paralyzed fingers, João Carlos couldn’t actually hold the baton or even turn the pages in the score (at least not fast enough to not stall the music), however, so instead the maestro simpy memorized every score note by note. He memorized, on average, 5000 score pages. (Unfortunately, he started to develop dystonia on his left arm, causing it to twitch, which caused him to have to stop conducting for a while, but he came back shortly after and has been conducting ever since.)
He went through another brain surgery in 2012, to recover the movements in his left hand, but at this point it was so atrophied he hadn’t even opened it in 10 years. He still occasionally played the piano in important events, and he even played at the opening of the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, but his playing was very slow and he could barely use his fingers, playing only a single note per second (compare with his 21 notes per seconds back when he was young).
(João Carlos Martins playing at an event in São Bernardo do Campo, 2013)
His bionic gloves were custom made by an industrial engineer, after said engineer saw him playing live and thought he could probably come up with something to help him. After he approached João Carlos to offer his help, the bionic gloves got ready just in time for him to play at the 466 anniversary of the city of São Paulo, in 2020, where João Carlos claimed “this is the first time in 22 years I place all 10 fingers in the keyboard”. Now, in 2021, he often posts videos of himself playing, and he always gets very emotional while doing so, and he is hardly seen without his new bionic gloves.

Tumblr post: Stop scrolling! You need to see something that will ruin your escape and make you more depressed about the state of the world!
Me: *keeps scrolling* :)
this is TOTALLY ok to rb, I, and others need to know that more people are like this.
You’re not selfish for ignoring current events. You’re not.
ESPECIALLY if you’re like me and are a minor. We can’t do shit, so why should we be pressured into doing something we can’t do.
a lot of people use Tumblr as an escape, I do to, it’s somewhere to connect to fandoms and other lgbt people.
Don’t let a post saying “You must reblog” get to you, it’s the same effect as “Rb or your mom dies.” It really is.
I want my blog to remain a “current-events-free” zone. I will not be crucified for it.
Do not be pressured by people telling you “You need to rb” it’s a scare tactic, and you are not selfish for not rbing.
Thanks cause I feel like I’m clogging up my profile sometimes
happy stimming

Columbia University Student Will Drag Her Mattress Around Campus Until Her Rapist Is Gone
“I think the act of carrying something that is normally found in our bedroom out into the light is supposed to mirror the way I’ve talked to the media and talked to different news channels, etc,” Emma continues in the full video which you can watch here.
So, I just want to go into HOW MUCH Columbia and the NYPD has failed, and revictimized, Emma Sulkowitz.
What I really love about this ‘mattress performance’ is that other students helped her carry her mattress across campus.
All those people reminded her that she didn’t have to carry that weight alone. That’s amazing.
this is her at her graduation
At her fucking graduation. God damn.
I’ll never not reblog this
This is about ten years old. Wonder what she’s doing now
Performance art and anti-rape campaigning, according to her Wikipedia article.

I will never not ignore this, I have been this many times before. I AM A SURVIVOR ✊
I’m so damn proud of her.
As a victim myself i reblog
An update, January 2021: According to Wikipedia, Emma has come out as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns.
I spent three weeks in a mental hospital and what I discovered there I feel like should be put into words.
we are not who you think we are.

the boy with social anxiety made sure nobody sat alone at meals

there really is nothing more charming or telling about humanity than the amount of time and effort we’ll put into something just to see how cool it will look when we make it fall down
me: that’s a lot of….oh…OH
Some old books have hidden messages on the edge of their pages.
This was done through a technique called “fore-edge painting,” which is an illustration that is hidden on the edge of the pages of the book. The technique allegedly dates back to the 1650s.
Young girls really are pressured now more than ever to be seen as beautiful and sexy and perfect like IG models and whatever the fuck…..like that’s why you see “me at 14 vs 14 year old girls today” posts……….we didn’t have this constant stream of content like they do…..content telling us to be perfect and to have perfect clothes and sharp eyeliner wings that look photoshopped and shit like that….I mean it’s always been there but not like this…and while I think girls should be able to dress however they want and do whatever they want…..you have to take into consideration the fact that this all stems from a toxic culture where women have to be perfect and beautiful…now at younger and younger ages….and it’s really gross…and the media continues to sexualize and like…make young girls seem older and more appealing than they actually are idk the whole thing makes me so uncomfortable and it’s only going to get worse :/
And the wildest thing is, people will still try and justify it with the “there’s always been girls that dress older than they are!” argument. Which is true. But it was never the norm. Pre social media, most young girls were allowed be young girls. Here’s Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Lindsay Lohan at 14/15 in 2001-2007. They were arguably the biggest young stars of the time but this is how they presented
They aren’t being styled to look leagues older than they are. They’re allowed to just be their own age and look their own age. Now, here’s Millie Bobbie Brown at 13 in 2018, Veronika Bonell at 15/16 in 2017, Skai Jackson at 13 in 2015, and Caitlin Carmichael at 13 in 2017.
There is a deep problem in our society that this is what people are styling children to look like. They don’t look like children, they look like young adults. They could wear these exact same looks in 10 years and they wouldn’t be questioned because they’re dressed and made up to present as adults. This is what is presented as normal for young girls, this is the image they’re told is the “right” one, the one they should aspire to.
There’s nothing wrong with girls - or boys - wanting to be pretty. But there is a problem with young girls being constantly told that pretty for them means looking over 21 at 13.
I am going to eat this entire candy cane.
