Chance to Education I've spent a month and a half volunteering in Mayan school in Guatemala. During that time, not only we helped children with English, Maths, Physics classes, but also carried out a variety of presentations on Sexual Health, Sexual Identity and Orientation, Gender Violence Prevention, Conflict Solving and Recycling. We also carried out activities related to theatre, dance, body expression, in order to help kids become more open and creative. As children study for 15 days, and return to their communities for another 15 days, to work and help their families, we had an opportunity to visit rural Guatemala. The families out there have very very little, but are willing to share like no other person in the western world would do. The kindness and love showed by those families was really touching. We were offered to eat with them, sleep in their homes despite the fact that their income is hardly anything, deffinitely below any standards of Human Rights. But these people weren't concerned about material issues, all they wanted was to share a meal over the dinner table and never ending exchange of stories. They were curious whether we eat tortillas in Europe, whether we keep animals, fruit trees and vegetables to feed ourselves from, is the weather also so hot like in their country, do we have the same palm trees and mountains around our homes, what langauge do we speak. It was in the family of one of the students, when the idea of fundraising money to help families was born in my head. Beside the struggles they face in day-to-day life, seeing the smiles and positivity in their eyes could not leave you "un-touched". For this reason, I am very happy and excited to send you a link to the fundraising campaign that I created a few days ago. There you can read the bigger story about the education in Guatemala, the poverty percentage of the country, but more important - the institution in which, there is a hope for the future generations of Guatemala. Children here work very hard to maintain the school. Teachers work without any payment for almost a year now. And all this is just for the love and hope, that situation can be changed, only if there are enough good people around, who are not closed-minded, who are aware about the political and economical situation in the world and do want to contribute to change it! Not everybody has a chance to leave their families, jobs, countries and go around the world making it a better place. There's a nice quote I found, which I would like to share here: "Don't underestimate the power of your vision to change the world. Whether that world is your office, your community, an industry or a global movement, you need to have a core belief that what you contribute can fundamentally change the paradigm or way of thinking about problems." I strongly believe this to be true. By working all together, imputing little by little of what we have to offer, all together we can make a positive change to whatever obstacle we are encountering. For this reason, I would like to ask you whether you can participate and contribute with anything that you believe is right. Whether it is sharing the word about the activties of the school, teaching people about the horrible poverty rates in Guatemala, writing to your friend who could do something to change the situation or supporting the children in the school financially, I would be the happiest ever.
