Can you help me understand the whole thing around why transandrophobia is such a debated topic and why every time i find a post that's focused on trans men it's written by someone who thinks transmisogyny doesn't exist
like i want so badly to find posts about trans men and then the blog is like "trans women aren't welcome in this space" and it makes me nauseous.
The very short TL;DR is: a small subset of trans men are trying to resurrect misandry theory.
The longer explanation is, trans men face transphobia, which is absolutely vile, and are left out of many talks that focus on trans women (because the global hate wave focuses on trans women) - as well as challenges for accessing resources such as HRT, because testosterone can be more restricted than estradiol and progesterone as a drug.
That's all trans men. But far from all trans men believe in transmisandry/transandrophobia, so what gives?
Enter transmisogyny. It's the intersection (interplay of two different sociological oppressions) of misogyny and transphobia: what trans women face when a focus is made on "defending women" by banning trans women, or treating any woman who doesn't pass as "natural-born" as a child molester - the list is long and not exactly the point.
A small subset of trans men who, regardless of when their gender revealed itself to them, were raised in the cultural reinforcement of "I am considered Unproblematic because of my sex" now have to deal with
a type of gender-based oppression they are not the target of
a type of misogyny they are in the oppressor class of
a group of people who will say that out loud
and they cannot handle it at all. It's entitlement: how dare someone tell them to not oppress others? That they are privileged, when they are the oppressed (and they are: by transphobia - it just doesn't make them incapable of propagating oppression on others).
So two parallel things happen:
A, undermine the analysis of transmisogyny. "Well, when people are transphobic they see me as a woman, so I am the one experiencing misogyny, so transmisogyny is about me first!"
B, make it an oppositional sexism thing (the gender-essentialist belief that any gender-specific issue or experience finds its mirror opposite): transmisandry (later renamed "transandrophobia" for the optics, by someone who later came out as proud detransitioner, twerf, and... nazi. that's A Lot to digest)
Then come a few different justifications for it, that the defenders of the concept will switch back and forth between so that no debunking can be met with good faith:
it's the intersection of androphobia/misandry and transphobia!
oh, androphobia/misandry doesn't exist and can't intersect - well I never claimed that it did, it's just transphobia directed at trans men!
oh, that's "just transphobia" - well how dare you try to prevent trans men from talking about their own unique form of oppression?
(there are a couple other lines, but really, these are the least insulting, and the switcheroo is just from "it's intersectionalism" to "it's just specificity" to "it's a unique form oppression" and when you ask what makes it a unique form, go back to line 1)
If it were just these dialogue trees, it would be obnoxious but toothless. The bigger problem is that this is rooted in misogynist and especially transmisogynist radicalisation.
Think of your reaction if someone barged in saying "#NotAllMen, get rid of feminazis, shut up about misogyny you cunts misandry is a major problem" -- now add "trans" in front of it and you get men who assume they're the "not" of #NotAllMen, call transfeminists "trans radfems" to try and make it sound like "TERFs," and oppose anyone who discusses transmisogyny with an appeal to "transandrophobia."
And getting worse. And getting worse. And. Getting. Worse.
Then you check on the groups and you see there are known TWERFS in the middle. There are open detransitioners. They start finding it weird how they really have to side with TWERFs to fight evil trannies, and... the move is pretty much done at this point. Radicalisation complete if it gets there.
It's transmisogyny all the way down, and it's not subtle.
I want it to be very clear: trans men have it tough. A small subgroup of them is pretending to speak for them all and reviving Gamergate-era MRA bullshit. Spend a few minutes on the big "FTM" tumblr community and you'll see nothing but fine folks who are not repeating that bullshit. Last time I went there I saw one guy try to start shit and the other trans men on there told him to stuff it.
But the issue persists because the same issue as with cis men exists: for every man who disseminates that manosphere drivel, there is one to fight it, two to listen, and ten who passively accept it without reacting.
#this is well put although iâd be hesitant to include the bit about how theyâre raised lest you invoke the idea of (fe)male socialization
Thank you; and while I get the hesitation it's different to "socialisation" which is very touchy when it comes to trans people and honestly gender in general.
It is mostly the first steps in political self-definition that will make it. The bioessentialist beliefs take root around that point, where pop feminism teaches one to interiorise the lesson that they are the Victim Sex and that all the Gender Problems come from the Other Sex. It breeds entitlement and self-exceptionalist thought.
Note that this doesn't have to be the same MRA bullshit to happen:
I've had someone (non-binary, she/they/he but if I used anything else than "she" I got a Look, transmasc), tell me that there is something specific to girls and that nothing comes close to in being sexualised from a young age. Then she said how she could "always tell" and tried to explain how neocunts differ from "real- uh, natal vaginas." Poorly, because the differences were very wrong.
That person called herself a man. When I said we weren't having sex because I'm only into women, she said I just said something cruel because she's also a woman. I said I'm not into men. She said I made her dysphoric and it's not what she is.
And that's when I understood that literally nothing she said about gender would be rooted in anything else than a zealous belief of birth-right to truth. What is convenient has to be true from gendered experiences, what doesn't go her way is Problematic for gender reasons, what she assumes is Just How Sex And Gender Work.
Now I'm not saying this is representative, that's just one person. But it is illustrative. That belief exists. It comes from entitlement to a feminism that is about you, regardless of your actual gender or relationship to it socially.

it fucking sucks being a disabled person who can't work and having to see these fuckass posts where someone's like "ahaha jobless people have no life and that's why everyone shitty online has No Job" and everyone and their mother reblogs it joyfully onto my dash for me to see. yes unemployed and unemployable people are truly without exception dogshit people with no hobbies and no redeeming qualities. you're so right. anyway if you'll excuse me i have to start my shift at the I'll Never Be Employed Because Of Permanent Disability And I Love Knowing How You Really See Me store
if ur able to work can u reblog this i am seriously SO sick of it.
btw this isn't solely a disability rights issue or an issue about people who are entirely unable to work. you should also be thinking about the people who are regarded as unhireable. transfems are hugely discriminated against in this way, people of color are passed over for less qualified white people, anyone who has any difficulty playing the interview game is less hireable... frankly anyone who made the mistake of pursuing the things they love and now has a degree for a niche field. if you still joke about Jobless People it's because you've fundamentally connected the worth of people to their labor, and specific labor, work that you see as valuable. and while i'm at it stop making fun of people who still live with their parents. asshole.
Every savory food has become a vessel for me to consume more of my homemade chili oil. This is getting out if hand.
According to the CDC, in 10 percent of those drownings, the adult will actually watch the child do it, having no idea it is happening. Drowning does not look like drowningâDr. Pia, in an article in the Coast Guardâs On Scene magazine, described the Instinctive Drowning Response like this:
âExcept in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing. Speech is the secondary or overlaid function. Breathing must be fulfilled before speech occurs.
Drowning peopleâs mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water. The mouths of drowning people are not above the surface of the water long enough for them to exhale, inhale, and call out for help. When the drowning peopleâs mouths are above the surface, they exhale and inhale quickly as their mouths start to sink below the surface of the water.
Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the waterâs surface. Pressing down on the surface of the water permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe.
Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements. Physiologically, drowning people who are struggling on the surface of the water cannot stop drowning and perform voluntary movements such as waving for help, moving toward a rescuer, or reaching out for a piece of rescue equipment.
From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response peopleâs bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.â
This doesnât mean that a person that is yelling for help and thrashing isnât in real troubleâthey are experiencing aquatic distress. Not always present before the Instinctive Drowning Response, aquatic distress doesnât last longâbut unlike true drowning, these victims can still assist in their own rescue. They can grab lifelines, throw rings, etc.
Look for these other signs of drowning when persons are in the water:
Head low in the water, mouth at water level
Head tilted back with mouth open
Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus
Eyes closed
Hair over forehead or eyes
Not using legsâvertical
Hyperventilating or gasping
Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway
Trying to roll over on the back
Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder
So if a crew member falls overboard and everything looks OKâdonât be too sure. Sometimes the most common indication that someone is drowning is that they donât look like theyâre drowning. They may just look like they are treading water and looking up at the deck. One way to be sure? Ask them, âAre you all right?â If they can answer at allâthey probably are. If they return a blank stare, you may have less than 30 seconds to get to them. And parentsâchildren playing in the water make noise. When they get quiet, you get to them and find out why.

Can I just say thank you to OP for putting such a detailed description on this?
Iâve been a lifeguard for 6 years now and of all the saves Iâve done, maybe two or three had people drowning in the stereotypical thrashing style. And even those, like the save I made last weekend, it was exactly like OP describes where the personâs head is going in and out of the water but it isnât long enough to get any air. Mostly you recognize drowning by the look on someoneâs face. If someone looks wide eyed and terrified or confused, chances are theyâre drowning. That look of âoh shitâ is pretty easily recognizable. And even if you canât tell for sure: GO AFTER THEM ANYWAY. Iâve done âsavesâ where a kid was pretending to drown and I mistook it for real drowning, but thatâs preferable to a kid ACTUALLY drowning.
Also please remember that even strong swimmers can drown if they have a medical emergency, get cramps, or get too tired. If your friend knows how to swim but theyâre acting funny get them to land. And even if someone can respond when you ask them if they need help, if they say they do need help? GO HELP THEM.
However . If the victim is a stranger, I canât recommend trying to get them. Lifeguards literally train to escape âattacks,â because people who are drowning can freak the fuck out and grab you and make YOU drown as well. If you do go in after someone, take hold of them from the back and talk to them the whole time. IF YOU ARE GRABBED: duck down into the water as low as you can get. The person is panicking and wonât want to go under water and should release you. Shove up at their hands and push them away from you as you duck under. Donât die trying to save someone else.
Please guys, read and memorize this post. Not all places have lifeguards. Being able to recognize drowning is such an important skill to have and you can save someoneâs life.
Just incase!
In a water park once, I was suddenly grabbed by a child and he dragged me under the water without warning. I was going to get angry with him when I resurfaced because I thought he was being an ass, until I looked at him go back in and out hyperventilating the entire time. I grabbed him under his arms and began trying to drag him out while screaming for the lifeguard.
When the lifeguard got us both out, a woman came running down and accused me of harming him and said he had been completely fine in the water. That there was no reason to drag him out of there. The lifeguard had to explain to her that her son had been drowning, to which her response was to say that she didnât hear him call for help.
People seriously need to learn the signs.
http://spotthedrowningchild.com/Â really demonstrates how easy it is to miss drowningÂ
every tgirl you know will become one of three-ish kinds of people. If she's unlucky she'll become multiple kinds of people in a really annoying and bothersome way. they are all different people but they come from the same place: this world fucking hates us and we need to become something that can weather it. she needs to survive and this is how that works
the shrinking violet, who will compress herself into any space as long as you'll have her, you won't even notice she's there. she's in the background. she walks like she's floating on air, and you can barely fucking hear her talk. she is an ant in your world, praying that today you will not notice her. when she is smothered by you, wallflower that she is, she will not cry. crying brings attention and attention means she will die. she accepts her death with dignity and grace, and you will not know her as she spoke not.
the 8itch. she will rip this world to pieces, and has thistle where a heart should be. she is either a grim survivalist who's voice died 5 years ago, or a loud punk who wants blood slicking her hands and someone's gotta pay for what happened to her. she's accepted that you don't want her, and she doesn't want you either, so don't even bother. her body is a fortress at defcon 1, ready to explode into violence whenever it seems like it'll break bad for her. you can't kill her, but only insofar that she is a kind of living corpse running on hatred rather than actually living. you will not know her, because she knows your type. she'd rather not waste her breath.
and third, the maid-knight. do you want something, sir? do you need something from someone? take it from her, sir, because she is a giver. her body is a garden ripe for the picking, and she will have you partake of its bounty. what are friends for if not this? she will never ask anything of you, sir, no sir, that would never do, not when there is more to give. please stay longer, sir, and take more of her. love what she does for you, how useful she can be, how wonderful it is to have her, to need her, feel the chill in the room when she's not there and beckon her to your side. she wants what you want. she needs, what you need. she laughs at your jokes and gasps in stunned awe of your greatness. being around her is a drug and the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh hits are free. she'll show off from time to time, but only to entertain. you'll find her an excellent conversationalist but in the quieter moments, when the wine has flowed and we talk of our younger selves, she is always the first to change the topic. when she dies of exhaustion, it is a tragedy. it was preventable. all she needed was to speak up, to take. you thought her as some kind of person beyond people, able to give from a bottomless well. you thought "how does she do it"? and the answer was she was convinced she did not deserve the bounty she grew, so she gave it to you instead. you will not know her, because she was always interested in what you had to say, what you wanted, what you were, where you were going, what excited you. you will learn later, pieced together from scattered accounts of the partygoers that also took her for granted, that she stood by your side convinced that happy endings don't get to happen to girls like her. it was easier to be happy when other people experienced joy than to hope that joy would come to her.
All the reblogs are arguing about this like its some astrology shit and not some common self-destructive coping strategies. What I havent seen anyone say or ask is how to help her. How do you give a voice to someone that has it but refuses to use it? How do you show you will stay to someone that prefers to pretend she doesn't want you there, and attempts to kick you out at every chance even if it destroys her, because the idea that you will leave on your own is worse? How do you give back to someone that refuses to touch, scared of taking? How do you help the girls that feel trapped in either of these archetypes? Because like it or not, so many are, and they deserve to let go of the destructive ways the world forced upon them. But they shouldn't do so alone. So how do you help?
sometimes she becomes multiple kinds of people because her mind needs to develop various defensive mechanisms and sometimes that's one or more little girls
Each day, i get closer to choosing myself if i were to be put in a video game character select screen.
Man I miss free the nipple. Its getting warmer and we donât even have free the nipple anymore
feminism has backslid so hard in recent years people don't even know what free the nipple means anymore
To clarify for those who don't know, "free the nipple" isn't about going braless, it's about going topless
No shirt, no bra, completely bare torso, just like cis men are allowed to
It's about desexualizing breasts and "female presenting nipples" and not being criminalized for our bodies if we want to go topless because it's a million damn degrees out. This was a popular growing movement that was still widely known a decade ago!
And the fact that not wearing a bra is so discouraged and stigmatized that people think the movement was about being able to go braless under your shirt in public rather than about being able to not wear a shirt at all says a lot about how far we've backslid in the past decade
You just teleported to the last movie you watched! how is it going?

Y'all for real please do these. Even if you're certain your posture doesn't suck. One day you will wake up with impinged shoulder pain like I did and let me tell you it fucking HURTS. Do these exercises even just once a week and it will make such a difference. Especially my fellow creatives out there, stop shrimping over your work and go do these right now. RIGHT NOW.
Also, if youâre even a little concerned about getting a hump or having trouble standing fully upright in your old age, this is how you prevent that. If you want to be up and about when youâre old you have to start when youâre younger. And keep in mind there is no bad time to start and itâs never too late. Starting today is way better than never starting at all.
