Not all men have done or are going to do horrible things to women. What’s the issue isn’t the sentence but what it’s said in response to. And that is, usually, conversations were women are acknowledging and discussing how to combat misogyny they’ve faced. And the issue of the sentence is that it forces the conversation to focus on whoever said it because they personally don’t believe themselves to be a threat. And it derails conversations focused on women to focus on men instead and it derails conversations focused on action to focus on the need for such conversations instead. It is, in essence, whataboutism and nothing more.

Gender essentialism is brain poison is simply an entirely correct statement that reiterates what is at heart the essence of all feminist theory. Even if some of it relies on that poison to make its points, given its modes of understanding originate in the attempt to unravel said brain poison. Sometimes people take wrong turns, sometimes people just aren’t willing to cut a knot because admitting that being white, wealthy, and able-bodied allows them to retain a degree of power in their femininity. But at the end, it still attacks the same poison. The argument is not a response against feminist thought, it is not a derailing of the discourse away from the actual matter, it’s not whataboutism - it is feminist thought.

In an attempt beyond laughing at the silly potterhead for not even realising they are more alike with their fandom’s creator than they’d like to admit, to break down how “‘cis men are evil’ is gender essentialism” isn’t a progressive revision of “not all men”. Cis men are - hopefully - allies and cis men are affected by our misogynist society too. Man, the patriarchal ideal of the one who’s owed everything in the world, is evil - but Woman, the patriarchal ideal of the one who must only attend to Man, is evil also. Men and women and enbies, cis and trans and questioning. We are only people.
