The last time I spoke to my father was during my last visit to my grandmother before she passed away. We didn’t have some kind of big fight or harsh words. I didn’t confront him about my childhood or about the years of healing I’ve had to endure to get over his absence in my life. When I left his house for the last time, I left quietly just like I did as a kid. We have not spoken since. It is not new, just a continuation of his absence.

The phone works both ways, but it has always worked both ways.
