Religious People are Hilarious

I just started reading The Reason Why Faith Makes Sense by Mark Mittelberg for a good laugh.  While updating my page count on good reads I found a user’s review, and thought I’d throw it back at them. 

A Religious Person: 

“Apologetics and material setting forth of the Christian argument are quite prevalent these days, especially since there seem to be quite a few who stand up loudly against Christianity in society and popular culture.  Yet far too many in our society have not even stopped to give the matter much thought -- they have gone along with the currents of society and do not really know any better.  They might imagine that science has disproven the existence of God, or that any higher power might remain unknowable.  Regardless of their views, they are not extremely well thought out, and spiritual concern may not be very high.”

A Logical Person:

once you stop fantasizing about that ideal version of yourself and start working towards becoming that person by setting your alarm clock earlier and actually going to the gym and actually volunteering at places and actually eating healthier and not procrastinating and working just a little bit harder you’ll realize that it was so easy all along. becoming your ideal self will only ever exist in your mind until you make the decision to work towards becoming that person. get up!! get going!! it’s now or never!! there is no light at the end of the tunnel!! get that flashlight and pave your own path bitch bc no one else is going to do it for u!!

It’s a good sentiment, but like...

1.) Depression

2.) Anxiety

3.) Derealization

4.) Dermatillomania

5.) Maladaptive Daydreaming

6.) Panic Attacks

I can’t even convince myself that I’m real let alone build a RL version of a self that exists in fantasy. In the fantasy I’m already my perfect self, so my real self is like “meh, I’ll just live there”, thus making reality (and trying to get ANYTHING done CONSISTENTLY) a thousand times more difficult. So, I’d love to “just stop fantasizing and start working”, but that’s not quite the way mental illness works. I only have so many spoons to give out, or so many tools in my toolbox, but I’m working on it. Med’s and therapy help, but again, that’s a lot more than simply “just doing it”.

WARNING: THE INCREDIBLES 2  IS NOT EPILEPSY SAFE.

This is not a joke. I was at a premier showing tonight, and my immediate thought was how disasterously unsafe this movie is for my photosensitive epilepic friends. @markingatlightspeed I’m tagging you with this specifically because this would be extremely dangerous for you to watch. There are multiple scenes in this movie with full-screen, black-and-white flashing strobe effects. They all happen without warning, and last anywhere between a few seconds to more than two minutes. In a darkened movie theater, this means the likelihood of a seizure could be VERY HIGH if you are sensitive to these effects. If you have photosensitive epilepsy or another disorder that is triggered by strobe lights, I would highly recommend you DO NOT SEE THE INCREDIBLES 2 IN THEATERS. Wait until the movie’s released on digital/Bluray, and you can watch it in a fully-lit room, with someone with you who will be able to help if the strobe effects do trigger a seizure. Please stay safe.

SO MANY FLASHING LIGHTS. I get panic attacks with strobe lights, so there was a significant portion where I was literally shielding my eyes with my hand.

It was a really good movie. But skip it if flashing lights have a negative effect on you.

I get headaches and horribly nauseous around strobes, and this is a legit concern with Incredibles 2! Some of the smaller screens flashing in the movie (computers, TV's, etc) we're less awful (for me), but there was plenty of eye covering as well. Stay safe, stay healthy!

Avoid video games that use extrinsic motivation. A video game should at least mostly rely on intrinsic motivation, meaning that the playing of the game itself is the fun part, not the reward you get for playing the game. If you don’t enjoy the gameplay, but you want to earn lootboxes, you’ve fallen into the intentionally exploitative system operating within so many games nowadays, and you need to find another game, because you’re not having fun.

It doesn’t sound serious, but this kind of thing can make depression way worse if you’ve already got depression.

this is true and i never thought about it. It’s that feeling of needing to check off all the boxes, without any actual enjoyment of it. It’s a very autistic problem for me; i crave pattern completion, but it can come at too high a cost.

I don’t want to agree, but in this Pay to Win society we’ve created, it’s difficult not to.

Also, My ex-roommate, who is depressed, would sit in the dark basement for hours on end playing overwatch--trying to get those lootboxes--and they would scream obscenities and yell angrily so often and so loudly, the rest of us roommates stopped leaving our rooms because it was so frightening. Why play a game that not only worsens your depression (keeping you isolated in the dark) but also turns you into a rage monster who stomps around the house slamming doors and yelling at everyone??

When an attractive nurse comes to measure your heartbeat and blood levels, you’ll most likely get inaccurate results.

XD when ANY nurse takes my heartbeat and blood levels they always ask me if I’m OK, because the second I step anywhere near a hospital my anxiety spikes 1000%.  

I had one nurse go through three different types of equipment, saying they were all broken, before I took pity and just told her she’d never get a legit reading because of my anxiety.

Another time a nurse took my reading and told me I was either in cardiac arrest, or dead XD

I sure am tired of article headlines about “phone addiction.” A device that lets you access virtually all available human knowledge, navigate your area, reach out to other people and document your experiences at the push of a button from anywhere at any time is not a frivolity.

There is a difference between a thing and a person.  A thing is utilized to reach a goal, a person has a choice of what that goal is.  Phone addiction isn’t researching or writing or reading. Phone addiction is watching vines for three hours straight, being unable to put your phone down when speaking to friends/family, or even unable to take a bathroom break without taking your phone. Phone addiction is NOT using a phone to reduce anxiety, Mother.

Hi comparing drug users to gun owners in the argument of gun control because “drug users always get their drugs illegally so people who want guns will too” is not a fair comparison because people that do drugs often have addictions associated with them that motivate them to find drugs whatever the consequences. No such addiction exists for gun owners. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
