The Desolation of Sirius Black

I am not, ordinarily, a great admirer of Sirius Black. In canon, he is reduced to a convenient plot device, when he might have been something far more complex. Fanfiction, as it so often does, gives such characters the space to breathe, to grow but also fracture.

For me, The Heir to the House of Prince offers one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful interpretations of Sirius Black I have encountered. He is not written to be lovable. He is tortured, cursed, and slowly torn apart. Though he is undeniably shaped by his family and his circumstances, he is not excused by them. He is selfish, vain, and frequently indifferent to the pain of others.

And that is precisely where the beauty of the character lies.

This Sirius is allowed to be ugly and compelling at once. He is tragic, ruined, tortured. It is heartbreaking to see him fall apart. It's devestatting to see him fail.

There are other characters in the story I may love more, but Sirius Black is written with such painful brilliance it just takes my breath away.

making friends via fandom is inherently hilarious because in many ways it's like a regular friendship and sometimes you'll share stuff that's going on in your lives and offer support and talk about food or pets or random cultural stuff because you live on opposite sides of the damn planet, but also some of your interactions are like "hello beloved friend whom I cherish deeply, I have brought you a deceptively platonic gift of lovingly crafted star wars porn"
