Who is Duke Thomas?

If you’ve read Batman Rebirth #1, you probably know at this point Bruce has pretty much officially adopted Duke Thomas into the Batfam.

But because of alienation many fans feel from the Nu52, a lot of people who haven’t read many recent comics are wondering just who Duke Thomas is. So I’m going to try and answer that the best I can. 

Back in Zero Year, when Bruce was first starting out as Batman, the Riddler challenged the city to get smart or die by “natural selection”. So Duke started swatting up to, you know, not die. The Thomas family also rescued a unconscious Bruce Wayne when a sudden hurricane hit Gotham around the same time as Zero Year. Bruce thanks Duke, then he’s off to tackle the Riddler.

Anyways, Duke disappears for a little while then reappears during Endgame. The Joker having figured out Batman’s true identity and his connection to Duke, kidnaps Duke and his family and plans to recreate the Wayne murders in front of Bruce and Duke by using Duke’s parents. It’s all pretty grisly stuff. 

Bruce manages to rescue Duke from the Joker, but Duke’s parents succumb to the mind controlling gas of the Joker. 

After that, I’m not sure what happens to Duke’s parents. I think they were missing at first, then get found but there is still no cure for the Joker gas, so I think they still aren’t well enough to look after Duke which explains why he’s being shuffled around foster homes in We Are Robin #1.

He’s also a massive nerd.

Throughout the We Are Robin run, though short-lived, we see Duke grow from an immature, unruly teenager into a mature leader of his little gang of Robins. (Although there is still some sassiness left in this boy yet.) We also see the significance of Duke as a leader and a kind of “stand-out” Robin and the bond that begins to form between him and some of the Batfam members, particularly Dick and Damian, in the crossover event, Robin War.

And finally the bonding. Let’s start with Damian first. Basically Robin War is all about the repercussions of reckless Robins that leads to the police arresting all kids associated with Robin in any way, as simple as wearing the Robin logo or even wearing red shoes like in the above panel. But of course, nothing is ever that simple in Gotham and the Court of Owls is secretly pulling the strings in an attempt to draw Dick out and have him join the club. 

So anyways, Duke and Damian’s first meeting goes down exactly how you would expect it to. Damian beats Duke (and his friends) up.

Krillin  Is  Best  Dad

Let's Add Some CONTEXT to Krillin in Battle of Gods

The go-to thing many ppl say about Krillin in BoG is that he was a coward who ran away while his wife fought. But, who was it that didn't fight until the last moment because he was AFRAID of Beerus? VEGETA.

Yet, Vegeta doesn't get near as much hate for being cowardly. Why? Is it because Vegeta ended up fighting later? (although he was easily defeated like everyone else). Most of the fandom ignores that Krillin was going to fight Beerus. BUT, it was more important for Krillin to keep Marron and others safe.

BATTLE OF GODS, ANIME ARC

Krillin simply explains that he didn't fight Beerus because he (or 18) needs to make sure Marron is safe. But, don't forget that Krillin was about to fight Beerus when Yamcha volunteered to protect Marron for him.

In the Buu saga, Krillin fought Super Buu to buy time for 18 to take Marron & run away.

Either Krillin or 18 will fight the opponent while the other keeps Marron safe. It's as simple as that. This is nothing new. They prioritize their daughter's safety like good parents.

BATTLE OF GODS FILM, EXTENDED-CUT

In the extended-cut of BoG, which gives full context, Gohan had told Krillin to get the others out of the area. Krillin does so. Krillin isn't just running away like ppl in the fandom make it out to be.

(Although, the theatrical-cut is largely to blame for this misunderstanding.)

This is similar to when Krillin told 18 to get Marron & everyone out of the area while he buys them time as he fights Super Buu (a more powerful version of an enemy that Krillin knew Goku, Vegeta, & Gohan couldn't defeat).

I don't hear anyone saying that 18 ran away like a coward. 👂

Then, at the end of the BoG film, Beerus prepares to destroy the Earth. And what is Krillin doing this time? Krillin is the one preparing to fight Beerus instead of 18.

Keep in mind, this is after Krillin found out Beerus is an extremely powerful god that just defeated Goku in a new god form. Krillin is always ready to fight when his loved ones and the world are in danger.

So let's stop saying Krillin is a coward. Most ppl don't even know what "coward" means. Krillin fights despite fear. That is "courage" & "bravery." When he is not fighting, he is protecting.

In RoF, Roshi ran away from Freeza while Krillin and the others stayed to fight. This clearly illustrates a moment of Roshi being a "coward" & a moment of Krillin again being "courageous." But, nobody talks about that.

A tribute to Demo

Over time Demo has become one of my favourite characters in this whole series. It’s very sad that he gets so little attention (from both the comic team and the fans it seems). That’s why I decided to make a small appreciation post about what I like about him.

Let’s start with chapter 1: Gray Mann took over Mann Co. and fired all mercs. Most of them went into hiding or just moved on with their lives: Scout: Helped Soldier and then wanted to get his money from the bank before vanishing. Ended up in prison though. Soldier: Was kicked out of his castle and then started working as a tourist guide. Pyro: Apparently became the CEO of a freaking engineering company?? Heavy: Returned to his family in Siberia. Engie: Disappeared and took care of the Administrator. Medic: Started working for a different team. Sniper: Went back home to Australia and then started looking for his birth parents. Spy: Wanted to go underground for a while. Ended up in prison with Scout unfortunately.

But what does Demo do? Nothing. He is depressed and unable to move on with his life. This job was everything to him.

He seems to drink even more than usual and completely lets himself go, not caring for anything. 

And now look at him when Miss Pauling is giving him his job back.

Look at his face: He is so genuinely happy and blissful when he is offered to join the gang again. Totally changed from one second to the next! :D

Another thing to notice about Demo is that he doesn’t bear grudges against his friends, no matter how shitty they may treat him.

Sniper knocks him out and then wants to throw him into a shallow grave!

But who is the one who supports Sniper after he got shot by the TFC mercs? Demo. 

In Chapter 6 Medic joins his old comrades in battle again. 

Medic betrayed the team and got Sniper killed, but he brought him back to life later - and that’s all that matters to Demo. He also doesn’t really mind Medic cutting pieces of his brain out.

(Don’t forget, he also immediately forgave his liver for leaving him. DemoxLiver = OTP lol)

Look how happy and enthused he is to be back in action and to blow things up. This guy loves his work!

Look how happy he is to be reunited with his team. This guy loves his friends!

He is the only one of the mercs who visibly cares for the others and is happy to work with them. And that’s why I love him. :)
