Ghent was founded in the 7th century when two important abbeys were built by the missionary Saint Amand. Because the city is located at the meeting point of the Scheldt and Lys rivers, it quickly became an important trading center.

During the Middle Ages, Ghent grew into one of the largest and richest cities in Europe, mainly because of its powerful textile industry. At that time, it was even larger than cities like London and Paris.

Ghent was also an important political center. In 1500, the famous ruler Charles V was born there. Later, the city experienced conflicts with Spanish rulers during the period of the Eighty Years’ War.

Today, Ghent is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, canals, and landmarks such as Gravensteen and Saint Bavo’s Cathedral.
