And like yes everyone saying we should have all adjusted our expectations months ago because they were never going to cast a bigger actor to play Harris and sure that’s a fair take given the way of the world, but I was just hoping for SOMETHING and I think that’s also a fair take. Like they were sucking nips on television but I can’t hold on to some hope they cast a guy with tummy
all I will say about this harris casting situation is that, in this post-ozempic clusterfuck of a world, people are allowed to be disappointed. hollywood already refuses to cast fat people in leading female roles, and this shit being extended to queer people is deeply worrying. why are only straight men allowed to be big and fat on tv? what about women and the gays? why do we need to shrink ourselves to be acceptable to anyone? why is it so difficult to accept that fat people can be fucking hot? this could've been an opportunity to rewrite that narrative, like they did with hudson and asian queer leads, but alas.
justice smith is a FAV actor of mine and i know they will devour BUT i think it's crazy for anyone to act like it's not weirddddddd for him to be in a role for an explicitly fat character (which is not his fault btw)......and i honestly think there is a larger conversation to be had about fatphobia amongst cis gay men.....i also think there is another broader conversation about the heated rivalry fanbase becoming largely cishet women, and i have to wonder if someone in the chain of production said a fat gay boy just isn't marketable to that demographic!
I'm feeling really conflicted about the Heated Rivalry season 2 cast announcement. On the one hand, I really like Charlie Gillespie from Julie and the Phantoms (fuck netflix) and I think he can be a great Troy, but I'm really disappointed that they didnt cast Harris to be fat. This is no hate to Justice Smith, I haven't seen any of his work but I know he's been in some popular stuff and people seem to like him, it's just that there are so few plus sized romantic leads and a book accurate casting of Harris would have been great to see and I'm sad that we missed out on that. They didn't just not cast a fat person but they cast a very lean person and to me that's quite disappointing.
My feelings about the Harris casting for S2 under the cut - don't interact if you're not going to do it with kindness and empathy for everyone. I am a chronically ill and chubby man, I am entitled to my feelings.
TLDR love the actor, happy he's not white, I am sad he isn't fat. Still love the show and am still excited for S2
It's making me sad that a lot of people are saying it's not okay to be upset with (yet another example) of a plus size character being slim in a film adaptation, because they have cast a person of colour but like,,, 1) fat black people exist and are hot so, literally his race isn't even relevant to this discussion and
2) I have been told for the last year how much everyone involved cared about positive masculinity and body positivity. Art doesn't exist in a vacuum and everyone involved in creating the show set such a high bar for the things that matter being right. Ilya being 6"3, Shane having long hair, Ilya's tattoos etc...those things don't matter. Ilya being a White Russian and Shane being Asian Canadian is very important to the story and their characters. Harris' race is not important for him in the story of the books so casting him as a person of colour I think is an awesome decision, but, he is chronically ill. He is plus size. These are things that matter for his representation and his relationship. The show runners have done such a good job of exploring how important art is, and how important positive representation is and how you can't make good art if you're making it for universal appeal, that this feels a bit like a slap in the face.
All the hockey players are jacked athletes and I've always enjoyed the diversity of their partners and the pairings. Kip is a New York Gym Gay, Kyle is a twink, Fabian is petite and androgynous, and Harris is a Bear.
I'm allowed to be sad that, yet again, something I love has decided that people who look like me don't get to have sexy or interesting roles. It's also another example of society thinking chronically ill people have to look a certain way - and can't be happy and chubby.
I also think the actor they cast is very talented and will deliver a great performance. Everything I have seen him in I have loved. I am still allowed to be sad that the show has made a conscious decision to not cast a fat person. Whatever reason that may be,,,, people won't want to watch it if Harris is fat,,,,the fans will be fatphobic,,,,he had the best chemistry with the other actors... it doesn't matter. This is not an isolated incident, this is not a new issue and this won't be the last time it happens.
It's just sad that it has happened with this show, because I trusted the creative teams dedication to diversity and representation. I don't now hate the show, I am not going to boycott it, I am not going to rate it badly because it is still an important show. It's still a beautiful story told with so much love and care in today's shit world. I will defend the importance of this show, the creative freedom of the creators and the autonomy of the cast and crew.
You are allowed to feel how you feel about casting decisions, and don't let anyone convince you otherwise. You just need to understand why you feel that way and where its coming from. You can love something and discuss it's flaws, you can consume media while having opinions that conflict with parts of it (unlike some authors, I wholeheartedly trust that money made from Heated Rivalry won't go directly into funding propaganda against queer people so I don't want to hear any nonsense about if you still think it's okay to read Dumb Wizard School Books). I am going to enjoy watching season 2 and everyone's performance, but I am not going to brush under the rug something important to me. And when it happens again, which it will, I will talk about it then aswell. I will continue to talk about it until we get inclusion in media that celebrates plus size bodies and disabled bodies and queer bodies and intersex bodies. I don't want to have to choose between having a black character OR a fat character. a gay character OR a fat character. they can just be both
