Sure with automation we would have more free time but we don't work for the fun of it, we work cause if we don't the system in place sees fit for us to starve and die on the street if we aren't lucky enough to have a robust safety net.
If everything is automated, yet the goal remains the acquisition of profit beyond the well-being of the people, how do you propose the people live, what do they do, how do they earn money?

We have seen seven givers before their transformation into givers, Remlin, Amo, Zanka, Follo, Gountess, Too Lily, and Enjin, and consistently, each character possesses highlights in their eyes up until the point that they use their giver powers. for Remlin, Amo, and Zanka, this is consistent between manga and anime.
In regards to Remlin and Follo, both in the events leading up to their transformation into Givers, have their highlights either dissipate in the process of their first activation (in the case of Remlin), or display inconsistent highlights in their eyes, with one chapter seeing follo frequently have only one highlight and one unhighlighted eye.

With the notable exception of kuro, who says he is not a giver, but is clearly something important and powerful.
What I can gather from this is that it is impossible to say for sure if someone is a Giver by their eyes, but it is possible to confirm when they are not. If their eyes are never portrayed with highlights, it's possible they have a power we have yet to see. or perhaps they are really angry all the time, this isn't a perfect science >.>

Noerde states that the Watchman takes everything that is precious to you, we see as she falls the comb slips from her fingers, but when we see her body on the ground, she's still holding it, after the flash, I think it took Noerde's obsession, the driving force behind her motivations as a character and her powers as a giver, it took away who she was.
i theorize The process kills almost everyone who experiences it, but there are ways to avert the damage done by the watchman, possessing a piece of the watchman series, these instruments act as keys to the border, but i also theorize one needs the obsession required to become a giver, or a strong enough anima to survive the process, possess any two things of these three and you can pass through the border and survive, but the process won't be without it's price without a piece of the watchman series.
anyway, that's my theory, the highlight over the iris symbolizes an incomplete dedication to ones driving obsession, their whole heart in something, a giver is someone who channels this obsession into an object, it took her drive, her obsession, everything precious to her, and that is symbolized by the returning highlights, which she did have before becoming a giver, btw

gountess, upon surrendering his vital instrument, has regained the highlights in his eyes, it seems that when a persons vital instrument is given away, or taken away, an individual stops being a giver, gountess's condition may be unique however, as he never really considered the necklace his, as he says, it's rudo's now, he was only holding onto it,
at this point, all givers we see before they gain their powers have highlights in their eyes, and so far, both givers to be shown with them after getting their powers, have been shown either directly before an incident where it is heavily implied her power is taken away, or directly after an instance where the individuals power is given away.
I am convinced that this is an intentional design choice, it doesn't mean every person without highlights is a giver, people consumed by an obsession or intense emotion can temporarily lose their highlights, but we should be paying attention because the eyes tell us a story, wing, the nijiku siblings, hyo, there's more to them than we yet see.

I think Skitarii are honestly the best choice for a Mechanicus character within the Darktide character environment. You already have Guard (veteran and Ogryn), Astra Telepathica (psyker), Ministorum (zealot), and obv the DLC characters of the Hive Scum and Arbites. So long as the player characters stay on the axis of non-power armored humans, i don't think the Skitarii are that out of place, the designers even said it was one of the first archetypes they wanted in the game but it needed more time to cook and see what kind of combat niche it could occupy. As the story of Darktide expands, other imperial bodies like the Arbites, hive gangers, and Mechanicus are likely to get drawn in, but i think the devs know that adding in Sororitas or Astartes would be far too overpowered compared to the other characters.
Now a sisters novitiate, with their lack of power armour, bolt weaponry, and need to be trained in real combat, they fit much better, pop a novitiates superior npc on the ship hub and its good to go~ they possess a varied kit in line with what is already being used, with a lot of options for variance from the current kit as well
