you know what time it is minions boot up the powerpoint 

with this one, since it’s just one panel, i was a lot more focused on the smaller details (ex: actually shading skin tones) and how those build the story, rather than how larger arcs can be represented through color. the xenonite prosthetic and the coffin are made of the same thing — Rocky built Simon the arm and his bed. the cushioning is Grace’s lucky quilt, which carries over all the symbolism of love and hope from PHM and adds on that heyyyyy maybe Simon is thinking about Grace so much because he’s also surrounded by Grace’s smell every night ;) minions next slide

the background is not meant to be any specific area of the ship, it’s just meant to be warm and comforting and green. the coffin blocks out the light ray coming in from the top left minions you know what to do

last but not least i built on the red symbolism i worked on last time and made Simon’s thought bubbles look like blood :) minions, closing statement

colored some pages of @wraithillustrates vampire!simon au. real ones know im a vampire fan so i saw this and i haddddd to. normally i have boring pedantic pretentious complaints about how people make vampires and their gay lovers be, but this was a rare thing where i actually have never agreed with a dynamic more. so then i promptly transferred the images to my procreate and spent three days being weird about color symbolism

so i am not good at coloring/shading people. fact about me. i used a base color, one (1) shading color, and an overlay layer of white at various opacities to shade all skins seen above. rather than dwell on it, i pivoted to a thing i AM good at: being nerdy about color symbolism. you better believe these curtains are blue, babey. speaking of blue minions, prepare the powerpoint presentation

blue represents GRACE in this!! you can probably tell from the blue shirt. the idea behind that was the sky/space, but upon further reflection there's also a bit of mars sunset and sulphur lava in there too. it's an angelic color, but it's not necessarily good. grace isn't good by any means here, but simon does defer to him on judgement, morality, etc. etc. blue is also often paired with red as opposites, which makes a visual contrast between grace and simon's colors that i really like. green also represents grace, but it's because greenery is something that simon associates with grace. both in the way of like simon-rediscovers-gardening-bloodymary-trope and also in the way of the-last-tree-of-eden. so the initial panels only have green in the background and are greener near grace. then the blue background gets more teal, which coincidentally makes the background warmer. the green really hits after the burst of red where grace bites his tongue, and the pages kind of come to life from there on out. the final page draws the greenish-yellow to a golden color, which turns into a pinkish red in a sort of sunset-like gradient next slide, minions

because red represents SIMON, specifically from his own perspective. ie the dark red of his inner thoughts = he thinks he's a monster etc. etc., which is lightened to a pink for his speech, where his inner thoughts bleed through but are slightly diluted. the burst of red then equals simon's mean inside thoughts plus one million, and the sunset pink is him accepting himself. which is also shown through the color changing to a warmer orange on the final page. the rest of the color symbolism derives from red = simon -> brighter red = hates himself more; pinker red = accepts himself. and the blue = grace; cooler toned green = grace stuff. and just looking at the colors man sometimes stuff is there because it invokes feeling and i dont need to tell you because you're feeling it. the sudden color inside the panels when grace kisses simon for example minions next slide

and then the other thing thing i really cared about was the lighting. with simon being backlit and on his knees in front of grace, resulting in grace being front-lit, i wanted to evoke more christian imagery. the lighting getting less severe as the story progresses is simon letting go of his religious trauma as it pertains to his vampirism. and the backlight ending up on both grace and simon is because theyre becoming equals <3 partners if you will <3 whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same <3
