if you want to lose weight, it's always assumed it's because you want to be skinny
if you want to exercise more, it's always assumed it's because you want to be skinny
if you want to eat better, it's always assumed it's because you want to be skinny
and so all information, advice, encouragement, and resources for these things is relegated to only being about this one singular goal. they don't tell you that building muscle while fat will help ease joint pains because your body can better support you, or that eating nutritiously will help your body have more energy and work more efficiently, or that working to maintain a steady weight, both up and down, will reduce stress on your organs. nope, it's all skinny skinny skinny skinny you wanna be skinny dont you wanna be skinny ooooo skinny
people dont realize that keeping strong and healthy muscles is genuinely important for long term health because of the fatphobic workout industry.
like a lot of the time the reason chronically ill people gradually experience worsening symptoms and pain is because theyre unable to move their bodies without limitation or agony. the loss of muscular tissue as a result of illness should be cause for serious concern but nobody gives a fuck because theyd rather focus on being skinny. like, physical therapy can literally save people's lives.
we should be using research on muscular development to create appropriate exercise routines for people with limited movement or energy, that matches their limitations while helping mitigate or at least slow muscle loss. or making physical therapy cheaper and more accessible. or advocating for bed and housebound people to make exercise more accessible. literally fucking ANYTHING.
but nope. gotta be skinny instead.

Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
I am genuinely so fucking stupid. I was reading this book where a bunch of people have to pass a logic puzzle in order to survive, and I was like "why are they all dying?? the answer is obviously the third goblet from the left!" yeah.....that was not the answer. I would've died in this book, and I would've been SO publicly smug before I did. like giving people the finger, smirking, etc. this sucks.
From the media that brought you "Millennials are killing [insert industry here]" articles for years and years and years, now we have....
"Hey, Gen Z, we're gonna relabel vacations into something else now and tell you how you really should be wary of taking vacation because it might impact your financial future."
This is a goddamn dystopia, we know this, right?
genuinely this reminds me of that one tumblr post about that cult indoctrination technique where they make unreasonable requests of you, and when you refuse, suddenly it’s YOUR fault for having a sense of self-care. it’s YOUR lack of commitment, YOUR lack of dedication — not the insane request of a company that does not actually care about you.
the idea that failure is an individual failing and not the oppressions of a broken system.
this is just flat-out manipulation. it really always has been, but this is the form it’s taking nowadays. crazy
This is so peaceful…
found this at an antique shop the other day and was immediately like oh this belongs on tumblr. sniles sneetly. fwowns fwangry.
I haven't seen dancing pumpkin guy ONCE this year, are you guys okay?
FINE! I'll do it myself
Why did 12 people reblog this today??? IT IS ONLY AUGUST!!!
According to this site, August 1 is the first day of Halloween.
watching my husband get diagnosed with and treated for sleep apnea over the last year was not the thing that radicalized me re: weight and healthcare but my goodness it has solidified my stances.
sleep apnea is more common in people who are fat.
society decided for some reason that this meant that being fat causes sleep apnea. its often difficult to get referrals for sleep apnea treatment if you are fat, because some PCPs will tell you try losing weight first.
turns out!! having untreated sleep apnea causes weight gain in a not-insignificant number of people. it also makes it fucking impossible for many people to lose weight.
my husband worked out the same amount before he got a cpap as he does now. there have been no major diet changes either. yet he has been losing weight -- and gaining muscle tone -- consistently since he started using a cpap in january.
also, his blood pressure -- which was high, which docs blamed on his weight/diet -- went down significantly within one month of starting cpap treatment, before his weight changed significantly.
ANYWAYS. this is getting long. two final thoughts.
- I Want To Strangle Medical Fatphobia With My Bare Fucking Hands
- if you are exhausted constantly for "no reason", and especially if you snore, you should probably ask your doctor about getting tested for sleep apnea. it is extremely common -- estimates are around 1 in 10 people -- and is also wildly under-diagnosed. like, some estimates suggest that 80% of people with moderate-severe sleep apnea are undiagnosed.
