“Ideological purity” has nothing to do with rejecting the Democratic Party’s ongoing slide to the right. That’s a straw man trumpeted by those misguided people too shortsighted to see how they, themselves, created the system in which Trump was even able to be considered a viable candidate. Pragmatism, avoiding future Trumps, has everything to do with it.
We didn’t get Trump in 2016 because of anything that happened in 2015 or 2016. We got Trump in 2016 because in 1992, shortsighted people like @thecuckoohaslanded said, “This is the wrong time for your ideological purity! We CAN’T RISK another four years of Bush!”
We got Trump in 2016 because in 2008, shortsighted people like @thecuckoohaslanded said, “This is the wrong time for your ideological purity! We CAN’T RISK McCain/Palin!”
We got Trump in 2016 because in 2012, shortsighted people like @thecuckoohaslanded said, “This is the wrong time for your ideological purity! We CAN’T RISK Romney/Ryan!”
If we get Trump again in 2020, it’ll be because in 2016, shortsighted people like @thecuckoohaslanded said, “This is the wrong time for your ideological purity! We CAN’T RISK Trump!”
In 2032, when we get someone who makes Trump look as benign as Trump makes George W. Bush look (remember when GWB seemed like the worst possible President? Doesn’t look so bad now, does he?) it will be the fault of shortsighted people like @thecuckoohaslanded, who made sure it was possible.
YOU DON’T ENABLE AN ADDICT. If you care about them, you *LET THEM HIT BOTTOM* SO RECOVERY CAN FINALLY BEGIN. Why people have such a hard time understanding this eludes me. Shortsighted people like @thecuckoohaslanded are like the abused spouse who argues it’s better to put up with the abuse forever, than to risk the short-term loneliness and difficulty of leaving the abuser for good and starting a truly better life.
Yet every four years, the foolhardy and shortsighted fall for the same trick, yet again, and say, “Now’s not the time to make a stand” or “I don’t want to throw away my vote”. Fast forward a couple of decades, and because nobody ever made a stand, a white supremacist Presidential candidate can boast “I could go out onto 5th avenue and start shooting” his fellow Americans, support violence at his rallies, and brag about sexual assault, and none of it is a disqualifier. All because every four years, too many Democrats were too cowardly to put a stop to it. And if you think that that downwards spiral is over now, that it’s reached it’s nadir already, you’re wrong. It’s not even close. People like you thought so in 1992 and they were wrong, they thought so in 2000 and were wrong, they thought so in 2008 and they were wrong, and you’re wrong now. Because you’re not willing to stop it.
You’ll never stop an accelerating race to the bottom by voting for it every four years. That’s foolishness.
So, what do you want to do? Do you want to stop it, do you want to fix the system, or do you want it to continue long-term because you’re too concerned about the next 4 years and and not at all concerned with the next 20, because you’re too afraid of the short-term pain that MUST come with fixing the system? You’re trying to avoid 4 more years of Trump? I’m trying to avoid 40 more. So don’t you cast your aspersions on me. You clearly don’t even understand the problem.
I’m sorry, I’m just tired of being dishonestly accused of “ideological purity” when in fact my view are based in practicality and pragmatism. Calling that “ideological purity” is a lie, a deliberate attempt to mislead, by those too ignorant or emotionally immature to face the fact that, just like in dealing with an addict or abuser, the far-and-away best road forwards for the long term may in fact, in the short term, be the more painful one.
If you care about the future of this country, grow the hell up. Or, at least, stop lying about what those of us who see more clearly than you actually believe. “Ideological purity”. Fuck you and your strawman insults. If you can’t understand what we believe, LEARN, don’t just make things up. don’t just insult us with strawman arguments. That’s what the Trumps of this world do and your tactic here is no better than theirs.
And I’ll say it again: if you vote for Biden, you’re voting for the President 20 years from now who makes us think “god, Trump was nowhere near as bad as we thought”, just like the people who voted for neoconservative, corporatist Democrats for the last 25 years were the ones who made it possible for someone as odious as Trump to ever have a viable shot at the Presidency. That’s going to be YOUR FAULT.
Think about this: Twice before, and now a third time, the major parties successfully got “Democrat”-registered voters to willingly vote for a candidate who was, except for a narrow range of wedge social issues, more conservative than Ronald Reagan. And in 2036 or 2040, you’ll gladly be voting for “Democrats” who’ll be far more conservative than GWB was or Trump supposedly is (because he’s not actually), because they guy who was in office in 2032 was THAT bad. And you’ll never appreciate the irony that that guy only had a shot because YOU FEARMONGERING EVERY 4 YEARS FOR 20 YEARS WAS WHAT ENABLED IT HAPPENING. You carried out their agenda perfectly, every four years, for decades. You made sure the trend never had to change. You made sure the addict never had to recover.
A vote for Biden is, simply for pragmatic, practical (NOT “ideological”) reasons, the worst thing you could possibly do to the future of this country in 2020. Some of us are concerned with the whole future. History doesn’t end in just 4 years.
And if you think Biden’s platform planks during a campaign somehow outweigh his established record of nearly 50 years, you’re a fool, period. You’re actually fooled by his lip service to the left? The amnesia of the American voter, on both sides of the aisle, is astounding.
You’re going to get exactly what you vote for. Not for the next 4 years, perhaps, but for the next 40, definitely.
