Newt says keep your head up! Be proud!
it is still absolutely insane that in a podcast featuring cannibalism, monsters, unquiet dead, a god whose presence makes you rip off your own jaw, ritual sacrifice, awkward elevator rides, brainwashed cultists, and the protagonist getting: shot, stabbed, dismembered, vivisected (twice), impaled (five times), tortured, throat slit (twice), gnawed on by creatures, biting off his own finger (twice), gouging out someone else's eyes (three times), buried under piles of corpses (at least twice???), turned into a building by a grieving ex, and generally maimed (a lot)... by far the most unnerving thing in the entire show is the not-even-outwardly-hostile ghost of a human person
HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A BED?????
Lillith Malevolent is so neat. Do you ever think about how neat she is. Like. In the source material that inspired Malevolent, Lillith is a femme fatale who makes anyone fall in love with her with just a glance. And in malevolent she prefers being in a weird purple humanoid form or an owl. Nonbinary Nightmare Goddess. Older than the Earth. Says "eh" to gender and is just having a grand ol time existing. She will scheme and mess with and manipulate people into getting what she wants. She will giggle while she's doing it. They use 4 different pronouns. Possesses some southerner and starts saying every southern phrase it can think of. Probably did the same thing to an english guy but we didn't get that on screen. Has daddy issues. Would have mommy issues but they don't have a mother. Has tried to kill its dad several, several times. In another universe, she tried to help kill Capitol G God, whereas our Lillith is very pro "keep the universe going" in this universe. She just wants to have a good time. And make others have a bad time while she has a good time. She's canonically sapphic, and may have had a situationship with some journal writer but was also definitely using him to get what she wanted. Has vivisected the same guy in a dream twice purely for fun. It was not necessary and he did it anyways. She's here to cause problems on purpose and then leave. They also care so so so much about certain things. They do not have friends because they're kind of above those who would be his friend, but they do have allies so that's nice. I love her so much.
i think there is a difference between a knowingly flawed character and a thematically uncomfortable character and knowing the difference is half the battle
knowingly flawed character: this character has traits that the author deliberately put in to show they have nuance and aren't perfect as a person. this will put them at odds with some readers and endear them to others, depending on them as people, and that's good!
thematically uncomfortable character: oh boy the author has some Beliefs
I've listened to 6 seasons of this podcast, mostly at night, and the thing that wigged me out the most out of all of it wasn't the horrorterrors or the widow or the cults or the mind flayer or the witch or the dark world or any of that, it was mr scratch in the ceiling (before i learned who he was), and even that was a one-off. and now, after all of that, the thing that finally gives me Real Nightmares is that fucking lighter
this post goes out to translators. translators who for the last 40 years have been told their jobs would be useless, their place would be taken by AI, and yet. they are still doing it for the love of the game. translators who do it in a crunch. translators who are asked not to translate "literally" by their employers. translators cursed at for "changing" the text by an audience that can understand 1 word between them. translators who find clever cultural equivalents. translators who are always to blame for the ambiguity of the authors. translators who give us a glimpse of another world. translators who take up the impossible task of making a text understandable in another language where none of the cultural connotations match, when no word can truly capture the same meaning as another. just. translators man

okay.... so I'm six episodes into Malevolent and I'm losing my mind about the meta framing of it all. metatextually INSANE work is happening here
to start off with, our protagonist, Arthur is blind. and the only things he sees are what is narrated to him by the entity in his head. Which, when you're listening to audio fiction, is your exoerience. You only know what you're being told. So it's soooo easy to Be Arthur as a listener!
And then, additionally, because Arthur has an entity inside his head, both Arthur and the Friend In Head will sometimes refer to themselves separately and sometimes refer to the two of them as we or us. Our body, our eyes, etc. So like, again, as the listener—we are doing this, our life is in danger, etc.
The separation between protagonist and listener is basically as small as it can be in an audio format!
And then, there is the little interlude between 5 & 6, ep 666 "a message for you" in which I learned that patrons of Malevolent were getting story chunks ahead of time and choosing what Arthur was going to do!!! Which, the Arthur + Entity situation makes so easy, any time they have a difference of opinion in what comes next, it's easy to imagine it being put up to the patrons!! Which is another way to close the distance between protagonist and listener in a really fascinating way
And then, in ep 6, the Friend in Our Head expresses concern that too many weird things are happening. Friend and Arthur are meeting too many weird people, too much is supernaturally afoot, and Friend feels like they're being set up, like something is controlling them or putting these people and obstacles in their way.
And YEAH. BUDDY YOU ARE IN HORROR MEDIA. Bad things and strange people and evil people and weird things ARE being setup for you to run into! The author is putting them in your way! And in this particular case, your actions are also being outsourced to the patrons. You are in fact controlled by two separate entities, one of whom is actually a crowd!!
The layers happening from a framing perspective are craaaaaazy, I didn't realise I was headed into a deconstruction of audio fiction and yet!! here we are!!!
also tried my hand at making a first pass Dollmaker design,, I think they’re really cyuteee :33

You don't know how sickly OBSESSED I am with the fact that The Manager instinctively laughs like Kayne but constantly stifles it. Every time he starts a little maniacal laugh and covers his mouth I LOSE MY MARBLES so bad.
