Eleanor & Park - review
Title I've read it in: Eleanor & Park
Original Title: Eleanor & Park
Author: Rainbow Rowell
I've read it in: Portuguese
Rating:
Writing style: 4/5
The plot: 5/5
Development of the plot: 5/5
How much I've liked it: 5/5
Overall rating: 5/5
When I first started reaing Eleanor & Park, I'd never imagine it would become one of my favourite books. Rainbow Rowell's writing style is very simple but that doesn't mean it is not beautiful. In fact, the simplicity of her writing style makes the story more realistic and it enables the reader to get lost in the world of the book and feel as if they were a character themselves.
The characters are simply extraordinary and unique. I would dare to say they're the best characters in the history of literature simply because of their flaws and their realistic description. They're not the average teenagers who look like they came out of an Abercrombie & Fitch ad.
Eleanor is not thin like the majority of the protagonists of YA books. This may not seem very important to some people but I really believe there should be more variety in the way characters are portrayed. We cannot keep feeding society's mind with ideas of 'being thin is pretty but being overweight is practically a synonym for ugly'. People come in all shapes and sizes so if we continue to create characters who are skinny, it'll make people believe that only thin people are beautiful which is completely wrong. Besides that, Eleanor has messy curly hair and she doesn't know how to match her clothes. She would be seen as a freak but Rainbow Rowell turned her into a marvellous character.
Park is another example of diversity in literature. He's one of the main characters and he's a POC. Unfortunately, there are not many people of colour in books, movies or TV shows and that's a mistake. In this world there are so many races, so why should we stick to white people only? I don't quite understand it.
Both Eleanor and Park are flawed and that's what makes them so incredible. They both have their problems and that makes the reader feel a connection with them.
The book also addresses issues that should be considered 'okay' to talk about instead of being tabboo. Topics such as dysfunctional families, bullying and abuse are very well represented in this book. This is a book I would recommend to everyone!
