Ex Voto (San Sebastián) - Ángel Zárraga, 1912. The inscription reads:
LORD, I cannot honor you with complicated verse; but LORD do accept this rudimentary and modest work, which I made with my own mortal hands. Angel ZÁRRAGA
Speaking of St. Sebastian, I’ve always been amused by this painting, since it takes the homoerotic subtext of the renaissance/early modern St. Sebastian tradition (already so strong it can barely be called subtext to begin with) and makes it completely explicit, throwing away practically any pretense of depicting a martyrdom. All the arrows are gone, except a single one which lightly pierces Sebastian’s nipple, an erogenous zone. The saint could not possibly be injured seriously, and appears to have gently dozed off. It is clear that the supplicant, whose transparent, tiny veil is as pro forma as the religious iconography of the painting, is not worshiping god, but the object of her physical desire.
The star-studded halo is also something of a departure from Christian tradition.
