➊ 10th house synastry:

— As far as romantic relationships are concerned, the topic of 10th house synastry is rarely brought up. However, I believe that this synastry has a profound effect on the pair and especially on the 10th house person. As the 10th house can be seen as the MC, the midheaven or where it is seen by the masses in not only platonic synastry, but any relationships with this in synastry overlays can undoubtedly comprehend what I’m referring to here. The 10th house, aka the house of status, social hierarchy and authority figures. The two individuals find themselves regarding to the other person very highly as the other may forever hold a special place in their hearts.

When it comes to 10th house synastry, never take it for granted, especially if the synastry charts are full of trine/sextile aspects. However, despite the fact that the 10th house is not considered a “sexy” house, it can be viewed as a house of power. When it comes to square aspects, there can be a definite power struggle, but it can also be a source of growth for both partners, in the sense that they find themselves pushing each other towards “greater” achievement. As a result, it increases the need to be “seen together” and might result in two people who are often associated with one another.

Can be very lustful, full of unexpected turns and definitely life-changing, 10th house synastry will make you feel so understood and sometimes, surprisingly comfortable. Not at all superficial like described, 10th house synastry has the potential to grow and expand just as much as any other traditional “romantic” synastry.

➋ 11th house synastry:

— Aspirations, companionship, and higher ideals are all found in the 11th house. Relationships characterised by this synastry overlay provide a once-in-a-lifetime level of connection. With the person you share an 11th house synastry with, not only are they your greatest friend, but they’re also everything you’ve ever dreamed of being with.

Wishes come true for specific reasons with the eleventh. Both parties might be reluctant and slow to move on from one another, which can be particularly troublesome in relationships that are built on a foundation of fixity. This synastry, on the other hand, has the potential to be just as confusing, way more than the 8th if it really comes down to it. Especially if both partners are unclear of what they want and what is best for them. Doubts and suspicions can arise when something seems too good to be true.

The classic friends with benefits to lovers type. This synastry has always reminded me of that one song.  From strangers to friends, friends to lovers and strangers again. These are the kinds of separations that will leave you feeling like a piece of yourself has been shattered but trust me, it grows you at the end. Visions for the future, as well as group associations and friendships are heavily associated with the 11H. Therefore the two could find themselves sharing similar friend groups or social circles as well as passion. It is so easy to love this synastry as it can be very long lasting.

➌ 12th house synastry:

— 12th house synastry is honestly something else. This house goes far and beyond from our physical world. The Karmic house, the 12th house seeks out things that are yet to be visible to our normal eyes. Objects here are hidden and are hard to identify with. One’s will have a harder time understanding their 12H since it is the house of secrets but also the house of higher power, one’s highest possible version of self. Therefore when this house appears in synastry overlays, be prepared for a whirlwind of secrets and seduction. The 12th house synastry creates a darker, if not way more unpredictable than any other synastry.

Couples with this synastry usually share karmic ties from the past and being together bring up these wounds. There’s never really a clear idea of what exactly the pair is feeling for one another. In the midst of it all, love, hate and despair all blends together. They can truly bring out the worst in each other and unintentionally trigger each other. Very enemies to lovers kind of energy. The two might not necessarily click immediately upon first meetings but with this synastry, the energy is opened up slower and more sensual as the two get to know each other better. “You’re not as bad as I thought” kind of love.

This love is very intoxicating, as once both individual decided to open up, they make a perfect blend. However, pain comes with this synastry. This type of heartbreak can be very traumatizing and soul breaking. Imagine someone lighting up the darkest corner of your soul just for them to shut it down and dim the light again. Not the easiest house for couples but undoubtedly the most meaningful connections once correctly enabled.

Writers' Resolutions

A bunch of resolutions for writers and people who want to try writing this year. It's in no way something you must do, these are just ideas how you can set out to improve your writing in the new year.

Try something new

Try to write something you have never written before.

Write something silly, write something serious, write in a different genre, try to write characters that you haven't explored yet.

Write consistently

Writing consistently will not only give you exercise to become a better writer, it can also keep your voice as a writer consistent.

If you have a first draft, write it down quickly and without big breaks inbetween.

Don't wait for inspiration

Waiting for inspiration to come can take forever. So don't wait for inspiration: search for it.

Make writing into a habit that comes natural to you every day, look up writing prompts, read a book you like, get yourself into the mood to write and do it!

Do your research

As a writer, you need to know about a lot of different things.

You can do research by reading books, listening to podcasts, watching movies, talking to other people, etc.

Take this year to learn something new and then tell your reader all about it.

Edit that draft

We all have that one story we wrote a while ago and then stopped at the first draft.

Take it and reread it and then rewrite it. You have a new perspective on it now and maybe this will be the year you turn your idea into a book.

Set yourself a goal

This explicitly doesn't have to be a goal about how many words or pages you write.

Your goal can be to finish something, to edit something, to write a few sentences every day, to share more of your writing or to publish something.

Don't compare

Try not to compare your writing with that of someone else.

Writing is about finding your own voice and telling a story that only you can tell. Also: other people's accomplishes don't diminish your own!

Write!

Whatever the outcome of your writing may be and whatever you want to do with it, if you want to publish it, if you want to share it with friends, or if you want to keep it to yourself: just start writing!

Do what you love to do.

This hack will save your teeth: there are no “right” and “wrong” times to brush your teeth.

It gets in your head that you brush after eating when you wake up and when you go to sleep. Yeah that’s all well and good, but those are times that don’t have a lot of motivation and control…So just…brush your teeth at a different time. 

You go to the bathroom in the middle of the day and are like “I should brush my teeth” DO IT!!!! Don’t listen to the other half of that sentence that says “shit but it’s not the right time” 

I don’t care if you’re about to eat, or get coffee, or whatever.

Honestly this hack will solve most of problems. Just stop assigning meaningless “right” and “wrong” to tasks and start saying “I can pretty much do whatever I want whenever I want and society and its expectations don’t really matter to me”. 

If there’s no barrier in the first place you don’t have to get over it.

Getting back into creative writing

So if anyone ever finds themself in the "hey I got too overwhelmed by Life tm and had to drop creative writing, but I miss it and I want to go back but I'm struggling to pick up where I left of" kinda situation, I got a few tips that might be worth a try (noting of course that everyone's brains work differently and all that so if these don't work don't worry about it too much - you WILL get back into it, it's just that you might need a different solution

1 - Look at some of your old projects

Did you have any kind of mood boards, incorrect quotes, outlines, prose from a project you wanna get into or you remember enjoying working on? Check them out again! Sometimes getting back into the process is hard because you're out of touch with the characters or world or plot which can make forward progress feel way more daunting. So explore what you have down already, and if you feel inspired, add to the collection - no pressure of course :D

2 - Make it REALLY easy to work on your project

For example, if you're working on plotting, set up a timeline with sticky notes somewhere where you can leave it up for weeks at a time. If you get an idea, jot it down on the sticky note and then place it on the timeline in approximately the spot you think it would fit. You can see progress growing, and if you only have one idea in a day, you can still make use of it without having to go too out of your way to make it happen. Or if you're in the drafting phase, an option could be to leave the doc open so you can just get right back into it if inspiration strikes.

A lot of writing advice will talk about how this is a craft about discipline, about how habits built inspiration, and if you're trying to write as a full-time career, then yeah that's probably true. But this is about getting into it as a passion again and that's the kind of thing that can be done better (in my experience) from a sense of excitement and freedom rather than one of commitment. So this tip is more about maximizing how far inspiration alone can go without worrying too much about the other stuff - that can come later.

3 - Find some people to encourage you

I'm going to differentiate here between "encourage" and "hold you accountable." Remember - the goal here is to make writing feel like a natural and exciting part of life again, rather than another thing to add to the to-do list. So these people are going to be the ones that cheer you on when you make progress or do something cool, rather than the ones who press you to keep writing, writing, writing. Though if you build up steam in the future and want to transition, that is always an open option.

4 - Try different forms

Creativity is creativity. If the specific type of creative writing you used to do isn't working for you right now, try other styles. Maybe you want to do longer form if you used to do short stories, or vice versa. Or switch it up between original fiction and fan works. See what sparks the most joy and run with it.

Outline I like (especially for shorter works)

Note: I learned this in film class (which is why it says "defines the movie" at the top, but I've also had success using it for non-film writing. It's basically a three-act structure, but I find for non-novels it's easier to work with than Save The Cat, for example.

Another note: Unraveling The Map is rarely a whole scene in and of itself in my personal experience - I usually use it to create an opening image that leads into the Launch Point, which I make the first scene

Unraveling The Map - Do you have an opening scene that defines the movie?

The Launch Point - Where are we, and who are we with?

The First Leg - What’s a normal day look like in this world?

Change Course - What sets our characters off on their journey from normalcy?

The Foot of the Mountain - Okay, we’re going on this journey together. (choosing the direction for solving the problem)

Climbing The Side - It starts hard, but you get used to the problems as you go.

Through The Cave - Do you have a B story? Set that story off on its own now too.

Reassess the Problem - You’re at the middle. Is there another way to get it done?

Try and Fail - Things begin to fall apart, can they handle it?

The Fall - The worst thing happens, something so bad you don’t think you can get up.

The Hidden Clue - What do your characters discover about themselves/the problem that they never saw before?

Race To the Finish - They’re up and running no matter what

The Treasure Chest - Did they get what they came for?

Where We Go From Here - Show us the world in a new light, hint what’s next.

ADVERBS: When to Avoid them

This post is about when to not use adverbs. However, adverbs are not all evil. There are tons of places where they strengthen your writing. I’ll cover that in a future post!

Adverbs are commonly used to modify a verb. Typically, this is done by adding an “-ly” to an adjective. 

He danced swiftly.  She cried loudly. He said angrily.

Instead of inserting an adverb here, you might consider going into more detail on the action. Show us how he dances swiftly:

He was light on his feet, empty in his mind. He let the music guide him. His movements reminded us of a feather caught in the ocean’s breeze.

Adverbs in dialogue tags

• A bad example of adverb usage in a speech tag:

“Don’t do that.” He said angrily.

• We can make this sentence stronger by showing his anger in an action, rather than telling it through the adverb “angrily.”

He shoved the boy with a snarl. “Don’t do that.”

• We can also adjust the dialogue itself, making the anger present in the character’s voice.

“Stop! Don’t do that. You’re pissing me off.” He said.

Adverbs being used unnecessarily

“He was so tired that he would eventually fall to the ground.” “After crying all night, Sarah finally fell asleep.” “The cat was very cute.”

These types of adverbs can slow down the pace and add an extra word that isn’t needed. The sentence is more direct and stronger without it.

“He was so tired that he would fall to the ground.” “After crying all night, Sarah fell asleep.” “The cat was adorable.” 

Adverbs that take away the urgency

If used in the wrong place, or too often, adverbs such as suddenly, immediately, and abruptly can slow down an action that is meant to happen quickly. The more wordy your sentence is, the less clear and concise it is. 

“It was quiet until suddenly a loud noise erupted.” “It was quiet until a loud noise erupted.”

“The red truck abruptly slammed into my car.” “The red truck slammed into my car.”

What are STORY QUESTIONS and how do they strength your novel?

The main story question is the primary question that readers will be wondering throughout the story. It will be answered at the end of the book. Typically, this question comes from your story problem (or inciting incident) which is the issue or event that launches your character out of their comfort zone and into the story.

The story problem: Prim is selected as Tribute, so Katniss volunteers. The story question: Will Katniss survive the Games and return home?

A story question keeps the readers indulged in the story. It keeps them wondering, anticipating and full of suspense. This means they keep flipping pages.

Now, this is where the magic happens…

By adding in smaller story questions throughout your novel, you create a flow of questions and answers that keep your reader hooked page by page.

Here’s a general rule of thumb:

The Main Story Question: the primary question that needs to be answered by the end of the story.

How will Katniss survive The Games?

Big Story Questions: every scene (or chapter) in your book can have a question (or multiple) that is answered by the end of that scene OR not answered until later in the story to further captivate your reader.

If there’s only one winner, what will happen between Katniss and Peeta?

In the scene where Katniss finds herself stuck in a tree above the Careers, how does she get out of the situation when there’s only one of her and a dozen of them? 

Katniss partners with Rue… but there can only be one winner; how will this unfold?

Little Story Questions: every paragraph (or at least the important ones) could have a question that is answered on the same page, chapter or even at a later time in the story.

In the very first paragraph of The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins casually mentions the Reaping. This is a little story question that intrigues the reader to keep reading in order to find out what the Reaping is.

If you introduce a question, never forget to answer it. Confusion and irritation can arise from this.

The longer you take to answer a question, the more time it has to sauté in your readers mind. This is good, but waiting too long can also cause annoyance. It’s a delicate balance, but can be so impactful in a story! That nice flow of question and answer, question and answer…  👌👌👌 muah.

How To Conquer Self-Doubt While Writing

One reason people never start writing is because of self-doubt.

I want to tell you something my high school English teacher told me. You might’ve heard it before, but I think we all need reminding of this.

When I feel like my writing is lackluster, I think about what she told me.

One day during lunch, I showed her some of my creative writing. When she finished reading the printed pages, she was impressed with the concept of my story. However, I told her that while I loved my plot and ideas, I felt like my writing was subpar.

I’d like to paraphrase what she said:

“You’d be surprised how many big, best-selling authors don’t have good writing [but amazing ideas]. It’s all in the editing. That is when their writing gets strengthened and polished.”

DO NOT compare your first draft of writing to a published novel! 

Published books have gone through many drafts, revisions, self-editing, and even professional editing. 

Get your passion, thoughts, and story down in a rough draft. Don’t worry about it being good enough. You can only polish a diamond after it’s cut.

The only way to get better at writing is to write.

Great list for romance writers, for example. Rose-colored glasses might make a character see another character as having some [trait from the left column] even though they're actually [trait from the right column].

Writing Imagery

Here are some tips when it comes to writing immersive and beautiful imagery! We don’t want something too flowery, but we also don’t want something very stiff.

1) Reveal character through their surroundings and how they react to the world around them.

A young wizard walks into their dorm after a long day at the academy. Their living conditions can reveal a lot about them. Is their bed twice the size of their roommates and spotlessly made? Or are they sleeping on a cot in the corner? What’s on their nightstand? Bottles of stolen potions? Or an old photo of someone they really care about?

2) Use all the senses.

What does your character see, feel, smell, taste, or hear in your scene? I like to think of it as an imaginary checklist. Using all of the senses in a single scene might be overkill depending on its length, but it is definitely wise to mix and match a few of these together! 

Fire for example feels hot against the skin, can smell like burning wood and ash. We see red and wild flames. it crackles and snaps, roars and pops, whips and bellows. It can taste like the smoke and ash that you breathed in.

3) Use adverbs wisely as they can “tell” instead of “show”

In its most simplistic definition: adverbs modify a verb, typically by adding an “-ly” to an adjective. 

“The monster growled loudly.” If we want to make this imagery more descriptive and full of life, let’s drop the adverb and instead think about how to show something being loud.

“The monster unhinged its jaw and let out a growl that rattled the cabinet doors and tightened the knot in my stomach.”

4) Metaphors and similes

Metaphors and similes can be wonderful for showing how something relates to another thing. Depending on your wording, they can also make writing more flowery and poetic. 

“His eyes were an ocean full of mysterious blues, and I was lost at sea.”

5) Relatability 

Even if you’re writing about a place or scene that the reader has never experienced, relatability has to tie in somewhere. It creates believability and a connection to the character.

If you’re writing about a princess who is about to marry an evil king… most likely, none of the readers have been in this situation before! 

But we can create relatability through the way the princess thinks, reacts, and feels. We can relate to her fidgeting fingers, the way she curses her heels for hurting her feet, and the drop in her stomach before she must present herself to hundreds of people.

These details create detailed imagery and also relatability to the character, which in return gives us a connection to them. And that’s definitely important if they’re your protagonist!

Writing your Protagonist [Pt. 1]

Here are some things to consider when writing your protagonist!

1) Know where they’re going. Even if you’re the type who likes to write freely with no outlines, it’s important to know (at least roughly) where your character will end up. 

2) Give them a long-term goal (and smaller goals). Every protagonist should have one main goal that they complete (or fail at) by the end of the story. Sprinkling in smaller goals will help navigate your protagonist through the chapters. 

Katniss’s main goal is to survive the Hunger Games and to protect her family and Prim. However, she has smaller goals she must complete during the Games (getting food, weapons, taking out threats, making alliances, etc.).

3) Give them thoughts/inner monologues. Let the reader see into their thought process. Are they holding secrets or doubts that only we hear through their inner monologues?

4) Give them a misbelief. A misconception they have about the world or themselves that by the end of the story they realize was totally wrong. A spy genuinely believes that every organization besides their own is corrupt. Later on, they realize it’s the other way around.

5) Don’t forget about side characters. Have your protagonist interact and talk with side characters. There is a great opportunity for subplots and added details/drama by doing so.

6) What unique flaws do they have and how do those flaws impact their story? Giving your protagonist some kind of flaw is important. Making it unique and vital to their story is a huge plus. 

An archer whose hand always shakes when he shoots. This could impact the story later by him missing a very important shot.

7) How can you take their darkest hour and make it even worse? Most character journeys have a darkest hour (nearing the end right before they gain the courage to win). Think about how you can make your protagonist’s darkest hour TWICE as bad.

A hero falls into a pit of snakes. A hero falls into a pit of snakes that just devoured two characters before him. But let’s also give him a deathly fear of snakes.

Besides showing how we nurture and want to be nurtured, Ceres also deals with our highs and lows- the brilliant highs and dizzy joys of the times we have what we want, and the darker days when we completely lose our faith.

Paradoxically it's only once we're safe that we can let our guard down and begin to work through what we've been through.

This means that the people who end up helping us through the trauma aren't usually the ones who caused it.

This used to bother me. It seemed unfair that people who were good to me were the ones left picking up the pieces, instead of the people who had done the damage in the first place.

But I've since learned (from being in the supportive role many times) that it's an honor to help someone else heal and find themselves... even if it has its challenging moments.
