Indigenous Peoples Day, NY *Grow* 5 years gathering with my spirit family, Sol sisters. It has grown, and so have we. Being here allows my soul to witness a Way of being that feels familiar, despite not having lived it, in this lifetime. Indigenous, Native, First peoples of this land are here existing through generations of resistance against political, military, economic, spiritual, societal annihilation. Kin, taken from their families, put in boarding schools and forced to forget their language, hair cut, land stolen, bodies beaten. And still Life lives and spirit teaches *Learn:* The fire lives The moon lives The grass lives The bird that cries to warn you to pay attention- did that on purpose. We know this. We call it signs. What if we believed them? Every time. Our grandmother's cured us with herbs, plants have intelligence and feelings and a stories Plants live And you and me, we can speak without words, we love in the distance. Our spirits dance together in dreams No one taught us this growing up. Many of our parents had to fight wars, immigrate, financial battle to survive. Spirit placed in a box next to Other. Even the progressive movements discounted the power of prayer. This was my foundation. A Red Diaper baby. My parents were revolutionaries and resisters against military intervention on some real stuff. It was never funny to me. *Move* The movement was my life and it burnt me out because there were few tools to deal with personal trauma How to make the world anew, if we use the same tactics of our oppressors? Oppression comes for our Souls Oppression comes for our souls But I know many on a quest for truth beyond this concrete existence. We Refuse to live in a world without spirit. Refuse to conform to the beliefs of transactional capitalism. Refuse to profit from exploitation of people and land. Our refusal is fuel for creation. #IndigenousPeoplesDay is testament, testimony that magic exists in pockets of solidarity that wish to weave a blanket big enough to keep us warm. My Great Grandmother was black like God. Black. Like the ocean on a new moon. Black like a seed starter That grows miracles Black, like womb and the universe Black, like my room in prayer In my last conversation with her, I told her she was beautiful And that I wished I looked more like her I wish that I could look more like her So my face could tell her story And my heart could feel her pain How ironic, it seems now, that her nickname was: Chola. In Panama, we call people Cholos who have straight hair or indigenous features. All of that melanin. And praise went to her hair. Maybe that's unfair. I don't know why she got that name. But I would have called her Miracles. How fitting, it seems now that her birth name was Altagracia meaning "Highest Grace." My father calls me Negra Chola. And I feel tremendous pride. He knows what I have inside me. I carry the magic but not the burden. I know some of you won't understand what I mean by that. My #Anxiety was on a level of High this past week. With an accumulation of personal worries and political #stress, i felt the acid reflux in my stomach buzzy feeling i get. I used to get bad after that... #anxiety, #depression... not sure, was never diagnosed. But I can recognize the feeling now. This coincided with a weekend with my parents in the #Poconos. And thank goodness. I made a work to-do list and tackled it aggressively. Worked outside past dark. And when i was done, burried my life in a hot tub. I swam as many laps as my legs could handle. After that "took off" the rest of the weekend. It helped me level out, think better, and not be borderline brat with my parents who are the most amazing people on earth. And then I stared at this lake for a while. Sharing the #lake part with you. If this sounds like a bourgie option. HELL YES! i tapped out and tapped into myself with modern day commodities.. and then absorbed love. I recharged and I feel happy and more #balanced in #emotions. The problems will be there, but i feel better equipped to handle them. Less bourgie options: beach, hike, staycation without any wifi at home and heavy backyard/fire escape chillen. How do you cope?
