I blame @goforpilotkinard for this. This is not canon compliant at all.
The first time Tommy thinks about getting a dog is right after he buys his house.
His grandfather had a collie when Tommy was a kid, a sweet old girl with incredibly soft fur. She stuck to his side every summer, no matter where he went, almost like she had waited all year for Tommy to come and visit again.
In hindsight those summers were the best part of his childhood. Now Tommy is about to move into his own house, bought with the money his grandfather left him. He likes the idea of sharing his new home with a dog.
Tommy looks into a good fence for the backyard, potential vet bills, the average fee for a reliable dog walker... And decides to table the idea for later.
The next time Tommy seriously considers the idea is after Aaron breaks up with him.
He's sick of putting himself out there. No matter how hard he tries, he always ends up feeling like there's something wrong with him. Or maybe Tommy just has very bad taste in men. He deletes his dating profile and throws himself into restoring an old Camaro. Staying busy helps, but Tommy is kind of tired of coming home to an empty house.
So he looks at the numbers again. Tommy's far from rich, but he's doing okay; he can probably find somebody to walk his dog when he's on shift.
But then Aaron calls him out of the blue, apologizing and begging for a chance to talk things through. Tommy knows exactly how that's going to end, but apparently he's lonely and stupid enough to make the same mistake twice.
Maybe it's a good thing he doesn't have a dog. He isnât even good at looking out for himself.
He sets up an appointment at the animal shelter a year into the pandemic. They arenât accepting any walk-ins, so he needs to do all paperwork up front before heâs allowed to meet any dogs.
Tommy wonders how many people are trying to adopt a pet right now because they donât ever want to be stuck at home on their own again. He can't even blame the pandemic, he's been feeling lonely for a long time.
But he looks at the long row of kennels and for some reason none of the dogs seem right, although Tommy isn't even sure what exactly he's looking for. Not a puppy, and not a chihuahua. There are so many different breeds, sizes and ages available, and yet it feels like something is missing.
After a while a helpful employee asks: "Are you married to the idea of adopting a dog?"
Gray is a gray tabby. Whoever named her isn't getting any points for creativity. She's on the small side, despite being fully grown, and most of her tail is missing.
Tommy has no idea what happened to Gray, but she's much more affectionate than he expected her to be. If he leaves the room, she'll follow him within a couple of minutes. She even insists on following Tommy into the shower, and then yowls her head off because she's getting wet.
She gets into every nook and cranny, and keeps climbing the TV instead of her scratching post. Tommy's neighbor feeds Gray when he's on shift, but of course she still pretends to be half starved every time he comes home.
It doesn't matter if he's on the sofa, in the kitchen or in the garage, Gray is always somewhere close-by. And if he's lucky, she'll curl up on his chest after he goes to bed.
Her presence soothes something inside of him. The loneliness is still there, but it's less crushing now.
Gray avoids Nick like the plague, even after a couple of weeks. The relationship dwindles down pretty fast, mostly because Tommy keeps thinking there has to be a good reason for her behaviour.
Jake actually seems to like Gray more than Tommy, and still likes the cat pictures on Tommy's instagram account for months after they stopped dating.
Frank and Gray seem happy to ignore each other in a pact of mutual disinterest.
Tommy never wants to hear another stupid joke about being a gay man who loves pussy.
"You have a cat?" Evan asks when he notices the scratching post in the living room.
"Yeah, give her a couple of minutes, she'll show up."
Evan just nods and puts the take-out containers down on the table. "Do cats like Chinese?"
"Mine will eat almost anything, if you let her. Guard your chicken."
As if on cue, Gray pads through the open door, and Evan waves at her. Tommy snorts, already way too charmed by this adorable man.
The third time Evan comes over, he brings a cat toy and a small bag of treats. "I'm trying to win over your guard dog," he explains.
Evan shrugs and grins. "I need to get in her good graces if I want to put my head on your chest. It was her spot first."
And for the first time in a while Tommy thinks everything's going to be just fine.
