The erasure of mental disorders & trauma in this fandom needs to stop
What is with this fandom and downplaying/erasing another character’s clear internal struggles and mental disorders unless it’s Alicia? Like the minute she shows any hint of sadness people rush to coddle her and come up with every excuse they can find to defend her but like.....
Chris- This is a 16 year old child who was most likely a target for bullies before the apocalypse (e.g. In season 1 when he got on a bus and a group of boys decided to block his path so he couldn’t walk any further and he still managed to keep his cool, ergo proving he’s dealt with this before), so this is someone who probably has a lot of pent of rage. Early in his life, his parents separated and his father went to take care of another woman’s kids. Ergo, this is a child who, most likely, has felt abandoned and isolated and struggled to find where he belonged for a good portion of his life. (Hint. How strongly he felt about staying at the protest back in Season 1. “Dad, I’m apart of it!”) Later on he then loses his mother, someone he loves deeply, only to find out that it was by the hands of his own father. The lines of sadness and anger then blur together and as a child, he doesn’t know how to handle such abrupt trauma so he starts acting impulsively (Dumping his mother’s body in the water in such a careless fashion because, in that moment, he was angry at his father) Not to mention , this is also someone with a high level of anxiety and it showed when he confided in Madison only for her to lie, say she believed him, provide him with false comfort, go behind his back and tell his father something completely different (Wasn’t she a guidance counselor??? Like what the fuck????) His character has so much emotional depth and, yet, people are so unwilling to explore it and understand it but they’re quick to label him (Someone who desperately tried to rescue a man who was clearly dying and cried when he had to mercy kill him. Someone who was hellbent on protecting Alicia since the apocalypse started even when the situation put him in danger.) as a psychopath.
Ofelia- Ofelia has lost both of her parents, two people she gave up her life for in order to care for them (She was going to get married but couldn’t move away with her spouse because she had to care for them, if you weren’t paying attention). She’s literally showing signs of being suicidal and people are downplaying the fuck out of what she’s going through. Not to mention, she never got to fully reconcile with her father and just like that, he’s gone. Where’s the sympathy for Ofelia???
Travis- Travis does not get enough credit for what he has done for this group, like honestly. How he managed to go on after killing the mother of his child and dealing with the aftermath, the sadness, the guilt, is beyond me. But once again his efforts are ignored, he’s deemed annoying for pleading with Madison to help him help Chris because he would do the same in return if it were Alicia or Nick. Like Madison gets called a Mama Bear for feeding Celia to the zombies for encouraging Nick’s method of thinking but Travis is deemed thoughtless for running barefoot for, god knows, how long to track down Chris the minute he caught sight of him when he was refused help???
Madison & Strand- While I completely understand that in the last episode they were very irresponsible and careless when it came to the noise level, I feel that they were justified in having a drink. Strand traveled all the way to Mexico, was shot in the process, only to find that his lover was dying when he got there. I think people forgot, way too soon, that Strand did have to shoot Abigail and dig him a homemade grave. Meanwhile Madison just chased her son away and now has to deal with the consequences of her actions which happens to be not knowing if Nick is alive, dead, or wounded.
Alicia should not be the only person whose feelings, emotions, and emotional trauma are valid.
