I am so tired of seeing the “well do we really want Bad Trans Rep now” line of reasoning with regard to Gabrielle and her relationship with Lestat and her gender identity/expression, and I cannot stress hard enough that this was not some inevitable dilemma that the production found itself stuck in because Gabrielle never groomed or sexually abused Lestat in the books. If she did in the show, that is a narrative they decided to create and run with. It simply does not exist in the source material. And so all of the hand wringing about oh well we don’t want to see a gnc/nonbinary/genderqueer/trans person being a groomer and sexual abuser on our tv screens now do we? rings hollow, because this was never some inevitable dilemma that the production is just trying to find a careful and sympathetic way out of. If it’s a dilemma at all, it’s one that they created for themselves, not one that the source material presented them with.

Digital de-aging is bad not just because it always looks creepy as fuck no matter how much money they pour into it, but because it deprives me of getting to see the fucking black magic of a) the casting director somehow finding someone who looks unnervingly like the original actor despite not being related at all and b) the actors completely convincing me that they are, in fact, the same person at different times in their life.
