Let’s play a game! 

I’ve travelled and lived in many places and I always find that there are specific breeds of dogs that are common in some countries/locales and not others. Just out of interest, what breeds of dogs do you most commonly see around you? Feel free to state your country/location, or just mention the dog breeds you always see! In the UK in my neck of the woods it has to be:

Staffies

Labradors

Cocker & Springer Spaniels

French Bulldogs 

Cavapoos/cavapoochon/ literally every kind of doodle under the rainbow

When I lived in Australia the dogs I saw the most (which I will never NOT find ironic):

Huskies

Malamutes

Samoyeds

Kelpies

I live in Tropical Northern Australia and the most popular dogs are:

Bully mixes (aka Darwin Special)

Cavoodles or spoodles (aka cavapoo and cockerpoo)

Australian Cattle Dogs (or mixes thereof)

Little white fluffs (Maltese, Shih Tzu or mixes thereof)

Behind all those are Dachshunds, Kelpies, Border Collies, Jack Russel types, Golden Retrievers, Staffies and Greyhounds. And weirdly we have this small concentrated population of Vizslas, which I find truly baffling.

In Texas, and pretty evenly throughout in my experience, we seem to have a lot of bully mixes, shepherd mixes, husky, and chihuahua/terrier mixes in the shelters. In addition to those and their purebred counter parts, lots of people also have labs, Aussies, cattle dogs, and gsps. All of which live in my student apartment complex.

In Norway, or at least my part of Norway, 97% of all the dogs I see are Border Collies or collie crosses.

Aside from that I see a lot of Setters, Vorstehs (GSP/GWP), Labs, Elkhounds, Whippets, Staffies, Huskies and GSDs.

But the VAST majority are BCs.

^just a little south of fidgetspringer and BCs/mixes dominate for sure.

However, I don’t know a single grey elkhound on this side of the fjord, only a couple of black ones - but then again we only hunt deer.

Loads of husky mixes/alaskans, hunting spaniels, and belgians seem to have overtaken the gsds. I know we have a sturdy population of berner sennenhunds and flatties. And multidoodles under 10kg.

Where I am now in NE Scotland it’s heavily gun dogs. Working cockers, field spaniels and labs. A good helping of Jack Russell’s to keep everyone on their toes.

When I lived in Fife, just two hours down the road, it was border collies and border terriers.

Where my parents are un the middle of England it’s greyhounds, but then they live next to the race track.

I’m in a fairly rural, farming area, close to the English/Welsh borders. 

The most common dogs are spaniels. Mainly working type cockers & English springers - they’re everywhere. A few Welsh springers around too. (Plus one Clumber Spaniel, who wears a bib). I do see a fair number of labs, goldies & other gun dog breeds too but the spaniels are most popular. Not surprising due to the popularity of pheasant hunting locally! 

Working type border collies, which people mostly just call “collies” or “sheepdogs” are very common. We’re on the edge of sheep farming country.  

JR terriers & their mixes. Along with an assortment of other small terriers - Patterdales, Westies, Border terriers.

*Small* poodle mixes. Don’t see many large labradoodles or the like, but plenty of cockerpoo & cavapoo types. 

Oh, lurchers are pretty common too - dogs with mostly sighthound ancestry, plus a bit of collie (border collie, or working type bearded collie) &/or terrier mixed in.

I live in South Birmingham on a council estate that sits on the border of farmland. On the farm side, I see a lot of collies, working Jack’s, working spaniels. If you’re English you’ll know council estates have reputations and my estate in druids heath has definitely earned it. We see a lot of bully mutts, a lot of small poodle mixes, a few dobes, a few gsds. Presa canarios and cane corsos are starting to appear more frequently as well. Ooh Frenchies too, they’re a dime a dozen.

I live in the Eastern part of the Netherlands now and the most common are:

Kooikerhondjes (They’re as common here, at least in my neighbourhood, as Cockers in the UK) Labradors Poodle mixes White Swiss Shepherds And a lot of mystery mutt Romanian street dogs by the looks of it

Do you let your dog get mouthy during play with people? Why or why not?

I never did with Pip when she was a baby pubby but now I'll let her chomp my arms and hands when we are rough housing. She's usually pretty gentle but sometimes I get pinched (usually we pause the game then). Just curious what other people allow!

I didn’t allow it when Aayla was a puppy. Now though I play rough and wrestle with her all the time.

Most of the time she doesn’t actually mouth me or put teeth on me. Instead she pushes me around with the side of her face and body slams me.

I do also play gentle tug with my fingers behind her canines. It only works since she doesn’t have premolars, but I can pull her around like that.

Only on rare occasions, as a special treat now he's an adult lol. I'm just like personally not into a dog who expects that kind of play as a regular thing so we just generally do not.

Nefja has too be in the right mood for bitey face wrestling but when we do she's actually more careful than when a toy is involved. During wrestling she'll just keep her month open like :V shove it over my arms/hands and push.

But bitey face is only allowed with me.

I have two nieces and a large family with a lot of younger children in general so I never encouraged rough play involving teeth. In fact, if Luna feels her teeth on you at all she’ll release immediately and back off/grab a toy to bring back to you. She’s also a larger breed dog and often handled by other people, I didn’t want the risk of her getting excited, nipping someone, and getting herself into trouble. Additionally, I have really sensitive skin on my hands and dog saliva is ironically one of the worst things for triggering my eczema. 

Wednesday was a work in progress before I left, not raised by my family or I and so she is just a toothy demon. She was improving before I left but it remains to be seen if she has continued to do so.

I have been so busy that I haven’t really updated here much. The pandemic hit and made my life a nightmare, as I’m sure it did everyone else.

I managed to move, I am now living in the Netherlands but I’m finding that being without Luna is like having a part of me missing. I’m not even sure when I can go back to visit her bc of the whole worldly situation. I just wish I could bring her here and keep her with me but we’re living in the attic of my partner’s parents’ house and it would be ultimately their decision to allow that. They’re not really animal people so I’m not convinced that that will be a soon thing

I haven’t got a pooch just yet, but I want to name it Harlow after Al Harlow, the front man of the band Prism. Because Prism is awesome and I’ve met Al and he’s the nicest person ever.

I really struggled with Roma. I wrote a list of different names down but none seemed to suit, so in the end it was just shortened from where she came from - Romania. I think it kind of suits her though.

Jak we just kept his name from the rescue centre, as he responded really well to it.

Im keeping a list of names for both genders to prepare 😅 But its all fairly random stuff that I like the sound of. Ren, Juniper and Wander are at the top of the list at the moment.

Mango initially belonged to my boss on paper, but me in reality. Which meant we had to agree on a name. We were not particularly known for agreeing on much (unless we had to). We spent the two weeks before she came home yelling names at each other which the other would veto. Eventually a friend suggested Mango, because we had lots of Mango trees on the property, and we agreed, most likely because someone else had come up with it.

Ciara is a family disagreement. Me and my brother know Italian and she was a very light colored puppy, so we said Chiara as in light colored. And my mom was like but they’re gonna call her CHi-ara like chihuahua. And it’s supposed to sound like Key-ara. My dad said to just call her Kiara, but it’s not the same. She got sick a day later and I was freaking out at the vet’s office bc i didn’t want her to die and I didn’t want her to be called CHI-ara. So I omitted the H from her name…. and was perfectly okay with it until the vet tech was like. “See-ara…” and then I knew I messed up.

Sadie was originally Quinn according to the shelter. We all didn’t care for the name. Sadie was one of the first names my mom tried after we adopted her and Sadie responded to it right away.

Rodney’s shelter name was Torrence (yuck). When I saw him at the pet adoption show, I told my mom his name was Rodney (after the guinea pig in Doctor Dolittle bc that was one of my favorite movies when I was younger.) And it stuck! My mom tried so hard to change it but I got my way 😎

Bosco came with the name his original family gave him. We tried to change it…even tried Rosco(e). But nothing seemed to really stick. So Bosco he stayed. But he also responds to Bean or Scooby so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Rylee we spent forever trying to name. My family could not agree. Most on the part of my dad who turned down every name we suggested. For 2+ weeks she was referred to as Puppy or Pittie (Baby) lmao. I think my mom suggested Riley and we all liked it, but wanted a different spelling so we chose Rylee.

With Baylee we wanted something close that ended in a -lee sound to match Ry’s. Decided to go with Bailey but spelled Baylee bc matchy matchy lmao.

Before Rufous came into the picture and we were just starting to look for a new puppy, I half jokingly suggested Rufus as a name. My mom was like “haha yeah I kinda like that name! I’ve always wanted a scruffy dog named Rufus.” Aaaand then we got a little curly bab and my mom was pretty set on naming him Rufous. We decided to add the o to be ~different~ …also bc that spelling is derived from the meaning of “red” in Latin and is used as an adjective in the names of animals (ex. Rufous Hummingbird)!! So kinda fitting bc he was a reddish brown lil chicken nugget!

Also since Rodney our dogs have gone back and forth between R and B names…Rodney, Bosco, Rylee, Baylee, Rufous… Not really intentional at first, it just kinda happened that way lmao. Now it’s just a nice pattern. Might break it in the future but who knows!

Future Puppy will have an R name to go along with Baylee (since she’s my personal dog)! Future Puppy’s name is a bit of a secret/surprise for now though. ;)

Hesper’s breeder name was originally Diesel. I wanted something to kind of fit with the theme because I thought he looked like he had been dipped in an oil slick or a tar pit, but Diesel was too common for my liking. So, I started looking for dinosaur names and found that the first canidae species that was in North America was called Hesperocyon, so I took Hesper from that. 

Virtue is named after the order of angels as a homage to my first dog, which was Seraph. Since Virtue is Seraph’s sibling, I wanted to stick with the angel theme. I was debating between Malakhim and Virtue, and decided to go with Virtue since I just liked it better. :)

Before Duma was born I was thinking of names for the upcoming puppy, I was thinking thinking thinking, then I came across a movie called “Duma” watched it, and loved it. Loved how the name sounded, loved that it was short and simple but also unique, and so her name is now Duma.

I had a whole other name set and decided because I knew for sure I was going to get a blue male.

When I was instead offered this little tri bitch I had to start thinking. I’m a sucker for history and geographical names tend to sit really well with me, and originally I was going with Troja (Helen of Troy sort of deal) but my sister kept insisting it’d be Troika. And I’m not funny enough to have a tricolour named Troika. 

And so Sparta it was. Within the first five minutes of meeting her I watched her tackle her larger brother to the ground by his throat, so she earned it just fine. We call her Spartacus. Her registered name is LMS’ Villa Medusa, so the greek theme worked out, too!

Ava is named after the Kingdom Hearts character. her name at the shelter was Jessie which i felt didn’t suit her at ALL. Ava was a compromise between my partner and i because he loves kingdom hearts and i love anything that has to do with foxes.

you can see that some of her gear matches the character! i’ve had fun doing that. her personality really does match Ava’s from kh which was an unexpected bonus. her reg name is Foreteller’s Vulpine Sunshine.

I studied Latin briefly in secondary school and had an interest in werewolves so my limited vocabulary in that language is based on lycanthropy lmao It took me a lot of consideration before I decided on Luna, the moon. The thing that would rile me up to no end tho was when people would ask if I’d named her after some Harry Potter character... I could not and cannot see how anyone’s first link to “Luna” being a character in some books when it is literally the word for “moon” in at least 3 languages. It is a name used often in media, I am aware but that is why I still find it odd that people would latch to the origin being Harry Potter. Occasionally, I think to how I could have actually named her after an obscure book character with a genuinely more peculiar name but Luna fits her to a T.

It’s half term so I’m back in the Netherlands for a week (largely doing uni work though, sad sad times) and we will be officially getting Wednesday next week when I return. She is going to be my parents’ dog so that, when I eventually take Luna to NL, they will have a dog of their own.

Here is Wednesday! She is a Newfoundland x that I am taking on a trial basis tonight to see how she gets on with Luna. All is going well so far, and I'm seeing the little things Wed will need help with to adjust here. Luna seems to really like her and I couldn't be happier about how the introductions have gone!

I try to bathe her every two weeks. Doesn’t always happen tho.

Whenever she rolls in crap, or just gets generally stinky because she forgot to clean herself or something. Ideally I would like to bath her once month a few days before flea treatment, but as soon as that flea treatment goes on she always finds away to roll in crap.

I never bathe Happy tbh, I have only once. Unless she is blowing coat, no hair typically comes off when I brush her. I do spot clean her and wipe her paws occasionally, but that’s about it. So there just doesn’t seem to be a need to me! Out of heat she doesn’t have much of an odor, and I personally think she smells clean, like a lot of cats do. Mud tends to dry and fall out of her hair before we make it back inside. I would like to bathe her more frequently to get that super nice coat groomed dogs have, but it is just not on my radar right now. All I ask is that she seems as sanitary as can be expected for a disgusting beast of an animal

Sage gets bathed approximately once a month in the winter and in spring, summer, and fall, that tends to increase up to once a week - for the sole reason that as a spaniel she is perpetually covered in mud or river water, and adores rolling in anything that I am allergic to.

I def bathe Fawkes whenever I go home. She somehow ALWAYS finds a way to roll in dead things at my parents house. If she doesn’t find dead things, definitely at least once a month.

Like never anymore. They get brushed/blow dried for coat blowing and shedding but that’s it. I wipe paws if it’s muddy but tbh many times I find muddy prints on my sheets and I just wash my sheets. They smell warm and like grass and sunshine and that’s my jam so whatevs. Tbh even if they get muddy I rinse instead of wash.

Once a month for a full bath, daily for a leg clean as we live in Northern England and it’s constantly wet and muddy. There have also been a lot of instances of Alabama Rot across the country so cleaning the paws thoroughly after walks is currently advised here.
