wouldn’t it be so funny if the the batkids had a secret trigger phrase system for galas? basically, every time bruce says a certain phrase during his speech, a batkid must do a specific unhinged thing.
here are a few examples:
“wayne enterprises is thriving”: jason has to kiss two fingers, point to the ceiling, before downing his glass
“proud to support gotham”: dick must yell “WOO YEAH GOTHAM BABY” like a frat pledge. every time. he once knocked over a senator’s mini canape tower doing it
“community matters”: damian has to silently take the nearest silverware/art/object of value, and pocket it while making unwavering eye contact with the nearest stranger (don’t ask how they managed to convince him to go along with the bit)
“family is everything”: tim sheds one award-winning tear. just one. that never fails to choke up those surrounding him.
and a bonus wildcard rule:
if bruce says anything about “gratitude,” EVERY batkid nods solemnly and whispers “for now.”
and you KNOW that they absolutely keep score as to whoever commits the best. the prize being that the winner gets to choose one (1) rule the others MUST abide by for a whole week.
previous prizes have included:
tim once won and made a house rule that no one was allowed to wake him up for anything (disaster. crime went up, gotham almost burned. but. rules are rules)
damian won and selected “no shoes inside the manor” and enforced it like a warlord (bruce had to brief the justice league in socks. wonder woman took a photo.)
dick made a rule that everyone had to compliment him before asking anything of him. it was hell.
steph (when she gets to play) forced them all to sync their jog cycles for one week (they looked like a mafia flash mob everywhere they went). (bruce was so done).
when tim won he implemented “dramatic pausing” week, where everyone had to stop mid-sentence once a day and stare into the middle distance like a cw protagonist

yeah but WHAT IF, what if there were another timeline once, one where you met the love of your life and fell passionately madly in love, and there was a fulfillment, a companionship, the look in their eyes, the feel of their hair, the feel of them lying in the night beside you - BUT something terrible happened. Something bad. Aliens invaded or demons burst out of the gates of hell or the great plague struck or maybe you just got cancer, and you were suffering and dying, and the love of your life found a way to save you: shunt the universe to an alternate timeline where the love of your life was never born and the aliens never invaded and the demons never burst out of the gates of hell and the great plague never struck and the cancer never happened. “She’s better off without me,” thought the love of your of life, “she’ll find someone else. She’ll live. She’ll live. This is better.” - and they flipped the switch.
Now you have a peaceful life. Birds sing, the sun shines, rain falls, years pass, and you’re not unhappy, but the years just keep passing, and you keep thinking you’ll meet someone, but you never do. You have little flings; they don’t last. You never marry. You pass 30. You pass 40. You pass 50. You grow old. One day you realize it has been more than a decade since anybody has embraced you and slowly you realize you’re going to age and die alone. And it’s really not so bad, your job’s cool, you have a cute house, with a cute garden, with a cute cat or maybe a dog, you travel the world; there is beauty, there are flowers and art and music and even friends, and really it’s not so bad. Every day is pretty good. You are aging alone and soon you will die alone, but it’s fine really. But you never meet anyone, and sometimes just before you fall asleep you feel like there ought to be someone there beside you; there really ought to be; something is wrong with the universe, something is not right; but these thoughts are only a dream, and you go on alone, never knowing that your entire life, and the sun and the rain and the flowers and the music and your quiet life, were, and are, a gift to you, the last gift of all, from someone who loved you, and loves you, more than life itself.
So, this season has been breathtaking, but one thing that has stuck out to me the most is the *cowboy romance vibes* so I took it upon myself to just search "cowboy romance formula" for the giggles. (I write fantasy and romance and love all the icky cliches, sue me.)
I feel as though all of our boxes are being checked. The vision is everything to me right now.
Anyway we just saw some softer side and a major event that threatens the relationship. Who knows where we go from here. Anything is possible. But if it ends the way I'm rooting for, how fucking beautiful would that be??? I'm gloomyaphelion, welcome to my downward spiral.

(yes, I’ve been traveling that much, ever since May, that I haven’t been able to scan it yet. Finally had to ask our fantastic lab manager to scan it at work: “It’s work related. Please don’t ask any questions.” She was like: “yeeeppppppp surrrrrre it’s work related, riiiiiiight” - she said, as she scanned it. thanks DD, you’re the best!)

The Grand Canyon Thing
As far as I’ve been able to find, there have been three previous references to the Grand Canyon, in2x09, 3x13, and 4x02:
From “Croatoan” (2x09):
DEAN: Yeah, you know, all this driving back and forth across country, you know I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon?
From “Ghostfacers” (3x13):
SAM: Well, it’s 12:04, Dean. You good? You happy?
DEAN: Yeah, I am happy.
SAM: “Let’s go hunt the Morton house,” you said, “it’s our Grand Canyon.”
DEAN: Sam, I don’t want to hear this.
SAM: You got two months left, Dean. Instead, we’re gonna die tonight.
From “Are You There God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester” (4x02):
SAM: Okay, so, what do we do now?
DEAN: Road trip. Grand Canyon, Star Trek Experience. Bunny Ranch.
First, the “Croatoan” line, which is the only one here that even suggests Dean’s never been to the Grand Canyon. The line can be easily taken two ways: Dean’s never been to the Grand Canyon; or he’s never been as an adult despite driving around the country. “All this driving back and forth across country” actually suggests the “never been as an adult” interpretation. Also, it’s possible for Dean to have been there as a kid, remember it (at least a little) and still honestly say he’d never been there. There are a lot of places–including the Grand Canyon, incidentally–that I’d been to as a kid that I would say “I’ve never been there” about. Because the things you remember about places as a kid–if you remember them at all–are not the same at all as what you remember when you’re older. I thought this was pretty typical.
The next two quotes are completely ambiguous, and wouldn’t suggest anything about whether he’d been there or not if it wasn’t for the “Croatoan” quote. “It’s our Grand Canyon” doesn’t mean “it’s something we’ve never been to/ done before.” It means “it’s something we should do because it’s amazing/ worthwhile/ mythic and time is running out.” There’s zero suggestion here that they’ve never been to the Grand Canyon.
Dean’s line in 4x02 is something similar to his full quote from “Croatoan,” where he lists all the things he’d like to do before his time runs out. Again, nothing in this quote even vaguely implies Dean has never been to the Grand Canyon. It’s on his list of things to do when time’s running out. Places on a list like that could be places you’ve been (but it was so long ago or a bad experience that you want to go back); places you’ve never been; or places you’ve been that are important to you and worth returning to. Dean’s inclusion of the Grand Canyon on his list could mean either of the first two things. It’s being used as a standard “bucket list” place, since it’s not uncommon for people to have “go (back to) the Grand Canyon” on that kind of list. (It’s on my mom’s, and mine, and other people in our family–we’ve all been there before.)
So there we are. Three mentions of the Grand Canyon over three seasons–two of which are completely ambiguous and don’t imply Dean’s never been there, and one less ambiguous but still debatable mention in the middle of the second season. It’s not a major symbol or ongoing theme. Could you interpret it as having great symbolic and thematic significance? Yes. But that’s individual interpretation. That’s the meaning and importance you’ve given it, not what the show has given it. Which is all well and good, but you have to recognize that what to you is hugely symbolic and thematically significant may well have been, for the show, a few fleeting mentions that weren’t intended to be meaningful beyond the moment at all.
"i can't do this without you (romantic)" of course. but also "i can't do this without you (platonic)" and "i can't do this without you (mentee to mentor)". for that matter "i can't do this without you (mentor to mentee)". nor can we forget "I can't do this without you (siblings)" and "i can't do this without you (work husband)". "I can't do this without you (novice to idol)" and "I can't do this without you (parent teaching a child)" and "I can't do this without you (a stranger on the street)". "I can't do this without you (we're in this together)" and "I can't do this without you (you make this worth it)" and "I can't do this without you (you give me hope)". simply so
