this is probably going to be the only post i make about this before i return to my silly little dog ways, because turns out i'm not emotionally invested enough in this discourse to genuinely argue about it (skill issue - it's me, not you)
however i do want to talk about it briefly because this has been gnawing at my brainstem since i really got into the fandom space around tadc. especially recently.
i liked oneāuno, ichi, singularāpost about trans jax and found multiple post talking about the apparent discourse happening between t-fem and t-masc headcanoners, which i didn't even know was happening until recently, appearing on my dash.
so, curious, i decide to check out the trans jax tag, something i've never actually done before. lowkenuinely regret that shit, looking back - should have just minded my dumb little dog brain business. but, curiosity shot the cat out back with a rifle, or whatever the saying is.
i scroll through the tag and lo-and-behold, discourse.
i'd like to preface this by saying i'm not particular to either one. i really don't care all that much. whenever i headcanon a character is more like, "hey, here's my illness :)" than an actual thought put in to if it fits their personality or not. so to me, as a trans agender/genderqueer, i think jax just needs to ditch the gender binary all together. but at the end of the day, i do not care about how people headcanon their favorite fictional characters. it's really never that serious, at least to me. to each their own, and all that.
back to the original point, while scrolling through posts and some of the comments sections under said postsāthe amount of times i've seen people refer to trans masc people as "birthday boys" is RIDICULOUS, when we all collectively as a intelligent unit remember we're talking about a fictional purple rabbit that is also moderately emotionally abusive to the people around him.
i didn't even know what birthday boy MEANT. i had to look that shit up.
why are we using derogatory terms to BULLY people for like, no reason? why? no please, tell me why? is it actually that serious?
people are being accused of being trans misogynistic for what, the cardinal sin of headcanoning differently than the general masses? daring to, as a trans masc, relate to a character differently that what's perhaps implied?
i don't want this to come off as me hating on transfems, cause it's not. i'm sure it's happened in the other direction (trans mascs being rude/derogatory to transfems), i don't doubt that; people in general tend to suck sometimes. however, the language that's used in this fandom around this conversation, is so toxic, it's kinda baffling,
like it's trans on trans hate crimes out there. it's the wild west in this bitch.
do i think jax is probably transfem? most likely yeah: gooseworx is transfem, jax seems to be a favorite character of hers, and people make their favorite original characters like themselves all the time. the cards are looking good.
do i understand being really protective of whatever transfem rep you get because there's so little of it? 100%.
do i think that justifies devaluing the experiences of other trans people and accusing them of being bigots, when the only "proof" you have is them not seeing a fictional character, who does not have a social security number, as transfem? no. no i don't. because that's a little ridiculous, no?
there's also been this underlining notion, implict thought perhaps, that i feel like some people seem to haveāthat transmascs have all the rep in the world, or like more than trans fems, and should stop taking rep away from transfems and it's like....no? this could just be me not interacting with a lot of queer media, but i cannot, off the top of my head, think of any confirmed trans masc characters in popular media or like, indie either. this also applies to transfems too.
honestly, i see more nonbinary rep more than anything (not trying to throw my enbies under the bus, love my siblings trust) because it's easier to get away with having a character with no gender than it is to make them trans. and even then, it's still more 'no-binary gender at all because not human', rather than actually explicitly nonbinary.
we're all in the same ship, it's 24/7 being shot at, and at some point or another we're all gonna start falling off/get thrown off and get eaten by sharksāor like drown or something :/
i fear i've been yapping to long, forgive me. lets wrap it up.
allll this to say, i think we should look on the bright side (crazy coming from me, who tends to be a bit more pessimistic) of things. i've commented this before, on a post that sorta made want to make my own, but it's nice that we as a collective fandom can agree that there's something very queerious about jax, something a little trans about them, regardless of which way to headcanon or theorize, instead of in some fandoms where it's like: "erhm, actually he's a cis male-" with the weird transphobic overtone it always comes with.
and it's doubly nice that media made by queer people is getting so popular in the first place. like tadc being as big as it is, is a net positive for the trans community, and the queer community in general, if you ask me.
i think we're capable of coexisting; if not happily enjoying each other company as we enjoy a piece of media together, than at least tolerating each other's prescence.
at the end of the day, these character don't actually is exist. there not real people. they don't pay real life american taxes (lucky them). and as far as i know, you can't actually be trapped in a digital circus hellscape and lowkey torture by a rouge ai. and it's important to take that into consideration when interacting with each other.
lets not rip each others throats out over pixels on a screen; that'd be kinda embarrassing ngl :|
