guards, execute these fools for wasting my time.
working with little kids is so dangerous. you get one kid who has a unique way of speaking & then spend the rest of your life with an internal monologue like “me’s go bathroom?”
other thrilling destructions of my vocabulary:
the kid who replaced his hard G sounds with soft ones, leaving me incapable of thinking of glasses as anything other than jlasses
kid who would holler "DID" any time she finished her work no matter how many times we told her to just raise her hand
kid who began her scary stories with "once a time" and her friend who began his with "paw time"
middle schooler i had during student teaching who pronounced magritte as "mah-gritty"
the kid who said "i got boogies comin out my nose" while sobbing and the kid who said "theres his puddle of cry" while describing a drawing, both of whom i think of when im crying
kid who said that if he was 80 he would get big and turn grandpa
kid who, for no reason in particular, would just say "like a little feet" as a standalone phrase in relation to nothing
edit how could i forget. the kid who got sneezed on and angrily said "whyd you blessyou on me"
My niece who asks people with dogs "are him big or him little?"
And every person without fail answers "uh.. him big"
Years later my vocabulary is still influenced by:
kid who called snakes "nakes"
kid who called calculators "cockulators"
my little cousin who referred to anything he didn't have an immediate answer to as "vewy mystewious"
"I don't yike heem"
we got august this week

Y'all for real please do these. Even if you're certain your posture doesn't suck. One day you will wake up with impinged shoulder pain like I did and let me tell you it fucking HURTS. Do these exercises even just once a week and it will make such a difference. Especially my fellow creatives out there, stop shrimping over your work and go do these right now. RIGHT NOW.
Also, if you’re even a little concerned about getting a hump or having trouble standing fully upright in your old age, this is how you prevent that. If you want to be up and about when you’re old you have to start when you’re younger. And keep in mind there is no bad time to start and it’s never too late. Starting today is way better than never starting at all.

TUMBLR STORY TIME.
I volunteer for my local shelter and when the weather's good, we do a free vaccine clinic every Friday. Free distemper, free rabies, cats and dogs. We hand out free food from the pet pantry, we give people leashes and collars, we do whatever we can to keep people's animals at home and healthy. Every animal that can stay home and be fed and be vaccinated is an animal that we can keep out of the shelter.
We get all kinds of folks, sometimes we even get backyard breeders but we don't do any judgment, because we want people to come and get their dogs vaccinated, because one parvo case costs $7000+ and the whole year of Parvo vaccines for hundreds of dogs costs less. It's just harm reduction, everything we do is harm reduction.
So anyway, this one day this woman comes up to the vax clinic and she is high as fuckin' hell, just obliterated fucked up, smoking a joint in line, and she has this TINY pibble puppy with her, maaaaybe four weeks old. This thing is so fuckin tiny and wormy and lethargic, and she's like, "Hey I heard I can get her shots." and we're like, oh fuck this puppy is gonna die. Like straight up, we were all like, fuck that dog is gonna die. So we gave her wormer, we gave the first distemper shot, and I put together a whole care package: wormer to take home, puppy milk replacer, puppy wet food, a leash, a harness, some blankets, toys, we gave her instructions on how to get the puppy eating food, and we told her to come back in 3 weeks for the follow up vaccine. And we were all like, well fuck, that puppy's gonna die, goddamnit, that's so fucked up. But you know, we did our best, and we hoped we'd see her again.
And in three weeks, you guys, she showed up. And she was still high, but like, half-high this time. Smoking a cigartte in line but like, could focus, could ask and answer questions. And she'd taught that tiny puppy how to SIT and had her walking on a leash. We found out that it took her three buses to get to the clinic, and she told us all about how she got the puppy eating right, got her stool solid, she was taking her on walks... The puppy looked so good, you guys. I almost cried, it was so big. Really happy puppy. At the end of the visit, we were like, ok, see you in three more weeks for the next distemper.
So three weeks later, she shows up, and she's sober, and she told us, "You know, I was really fucked up the day I bought that puppy, I wasn't sure I was going to live, and I bought that puppy and she was too young, and I didn't know what I was doing but y'all were so nice to me, and you helped me so much, and I knew that I had to give this puppy the best life I could, so I moved back in with my grandma, and I'm getting clean, and I'm on methadone, and I'm going to rehab next week, and when I get back, I'll come back and visit you guys again."
So I just wanna say. Sometimes it's hard to find a reason to get clean for yourself. Sometimes you gotta do it for a little critter that depends on you.
Whilst my addition to this post isn't a story about someone struggling with addiction giving themselves grace and a reason to change their lives for the sake of an innocent thing, I do think sharing what my mother did is a good idea. My mother's story is more centred on her mental health and journey to try and be less of the woman I grew up with so that she could be better than she was before.
The woman I grew up with was always angry, reactive, and—honestly—scared. She saw danger everywhere, could never perceive anyone who wasn't openly happy as anything but hostile. I grew up learning to manage her anger and burying my own. But when I was in my early 20s, something happened that, honestly, did more to change her than anything else had before.
My mother ended up with a cat. A kitten, actually, and it altered something in her brain chemistry in an irrevocable way.
.
My mother's cat, Mason, was originally the cat of a 'family friend', who we'll call Debbie, who was high af all the time, lost her kids bc Debbie valued drugs more, and was locking Mason in a small room in high temps with no water and feeding him dog meat when he was still young enough that he shouldn't have been away from his mother.
My mother, when she saw him, told Debbie to give him to her and Debbie refused. Said it was her cat, she could care for it, blah blah blah and my mother could "fuck off" basically.
Except, my mother wasn't asking.
She pinned Debbie to the wall by her throat and very calmly informed her that she'd be taking the kitten no matter what and it didn't matter to my mother if Debbie was breathing or not when she left with Mason.
Debbie did not argue and my mother left with the kitten. She called me and told me to meet her with the small dog cage we had and told me what happened.
Mason wasn't as bad as he could have been, but he suffered long-term damage to his digestion thanks to Debbie feeding him dog meat (not even puppy meat! Just regular crappy, cheap, tinned dog meat in gravy ffs!) for the two-three weeks she'd had him and he was... If I remember correctly, he was about six-seven weeks old at most.
FYI: kittens typically start being weaned off their mother's milk after about four weeks and it takes about a month for them to near fully transition to solid food.
Mason was weaned a week earlier than he should have been, at minimum, by the guy who basically used Mason's mother as a little breeding bank machine.
(who, unfortunately, I knew bc he's a 'friend' of my older brother: the dude is a dick and I hate him thanks)
So, Mason, weaned a week or so too soon, sold for money (or drugs, I really don't know for sure but considering the people involved it wouldn't surprise me sadly) to a woman with no fuckin clue how to raise a baby anything, locked in a hot room, no access to water, fed dog meat only when Debbie fuckin bothered to remember to feed him (gods I hate that woman so fuckin much), and even the vet we took him to was surprised that Mason didn't have worse problems than the usual (fleas, worms) and the digestive issue.
Ten years later, and Mason is a big, cheeky boy with a mischief streak a mile or three wide. He's always struggled to eat regular cat food—it being hit-or-miss with cat biscuits/kibble and a major no-go with cat meat/wet food—but he's grown big and strong on a mixed diet of cat treats, boiled meat like chicken, and dedicated effort by my mother and I to slowly getting his system to handle specific types of cat biscuits/kibble.
And here he is, a happy, relaxed baby who screams at you for attention, climbs on the roof via my window when he feels like it, cannot be trusted to not make a mess around water, and so, so affectionate that my mother has never once regretted taking him from Debbie.
My mother has changed parts of her entire life to better accommodate, Mason, doing things I never thought she would so that she'd be there for him and live up to the responsibility that raising a small, precious, innocent thing places upon you.
I do wish he wouldn't climb up on to the roof via my window at silly o'clock in the morning tho and ignore me begging him to come back inside. That I could do without!
the problem is i really do love staying up until one billion o'clock. it just cant be helped
