Day 30: Quilt You Are Proudest Of #GreatBritishQuilter 🇬🇧 We've made it, last day + thanks to @sarahashfordstudios + @verykerryberry for hosting. 👏🏽 I've been looking forward to sharing today's quilt, it's 2 years since I first shared it, so great to look back on this quilt today. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🗽 The quilt I’m proudest of is my winning “English Woman in New York” quilt from the @QuiltAlliance Quilt Match challenge at Quilters Take Manhattan 2016. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🗽 3 contenders, [me, @yoMaryFons and @aleedac] were challenged to take part in a Quilt Match in front of a live audience. I represented @NYCMetroMOD; my chosen team name was Quilty Spice + my team song was “Wannabe”; my team mate was Susan @EasyPiecing. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🗽 We brought along 1 yard of background fabric + were challenged to design a quilt in 1 hour using supplied fabrics + glue. The winning quilt was judged by audience applause volume. My chosen fabric was an NYC Line By Line - Night fabric exclusive to @TheCityQuilter quilt store where I'd worked in Manhattan + my design was based on English elements (tea time, union flag, crown + tiara) to represent my homeland + the background NYC fabric to represent my then current home. 🏆 I was delighted to win with @Meg4Quilts announcing me 2016 Featherweight Champ Of The Quilt World + previous winner @AllieAller presenting me with the winning belt - now proudly on display in my sewing studio + sometimes accompanying me to quilting events – swipe through to see my winning happy dance. 🏆 I took the quilt pieces home + made them into a quilt, backed + bound with another City Quilter fabric, NYC Line By Line - Day. Day 19: TV/Box Set To Stitch To #GreatBritishQuilter 🇬🇧 📺 I’m going to write in English English today with some American English translations in (). After 7 years in 🇺🇸, every day I’m still learning the differences in our not-so ‘common language’ and, when it comes to talking about telly (TV), there are many terms that don’t cross the pond. 📺 What do I like to watch on telly (TV) when I’m sewing? – The answer is pretty much anything British 🇬🇧. 📺 💭 imo, you simply can’t beat British telly for plot, character development and dialogue. In the main, we don’t go in for blockbuster style dumbing down or playing to the lowest common denominator, we make you have to think a bit and I enjoy that. Brits keep each series (season) short (6/8 rather than 22+ episodes (shows)) and seldom overextend the life of a programme (show) with excessive multiple series (seasons), I think our philosophy is more 'quit while you're ahead'. Don’t even get me started on US shows taking a hiatus/mid-season break each winter - late Nov to mid-Jan. There’d be uproar in Britain if they tried to pull this one on us, and more than a few sacks of letters and emails would be on their way to Auntie (BBC) ✉📧📨. Lol, we get upset enough when the World Cup (soccer) or Olympics interfere with our regular viewing💭 📺 My absolute fave show on the telly is the Beeb’s (BBC) Line of Duty, affectionately known as LOD 👮🏻‍♂️👮🏻‍♀️👮🏼‍♂️. Day 21: Quilty Quote #GreatBritishQuilter 🇬🇧 🎁 When we make quilts and gift them, we gift a huge part of ourselves along with it. Most of the time this is a truly wonderful experience for the quilter and the recipient. However, there are occasions when the person receiving our quilt doesn’t do so with an appreciation and understanding of what is being gifted to them and other times we gift a quilt to someone and later the relationship falters and maybe even ends. 🎁 These scenarios can be heartbreaking. Years ago, when I mourned the loss of a quilt, Lisa, @theredheadedmermaid, advised me to consider 'quilt worthiness' before gifting a quilt. This struck a chord and changed the way I viewed gifting my quilts. 🎁 Have you experienced the pain of gifting a quilt and, for whatever reason, regretting it? Day 18: Project You Made To Keep #GreatBritishQuilter 🇬🇧 💚💙💛 The thing about quilters is that we love to make quilts for other people and seldom make them for ourselves. Yes, though I've made more quilts than I can count, I have only a handful that I’ve made intentionally to keep; to date this one is my favourite. 💚💙💛 It is my Colour Drop quilt – @MellyTesta gave me some of her hand printed fabric samples and asked me to make a quilt top showcasing their half-drop repeat that she could take to the Fall 2016 Quilt Market. I teamed her prints with my own coordinating solids and promptly fell in love with it. I asked Melanie if I could keep the top after market and, when it was returned to me, I made it up into this quilt, which I machine and then hand quilted. It’s on my sofa and used every single day. Day 17: Your Sewing Machine #GreatBritishQuilter 🇬🇧 ✂✂✂ I hold my hands up, guilty as charged, I have 7 sewing machines: 1) Juki TL-2010Q - straight stitch, large throat for home quilting and the best workhorse ever. I absolutely love this machine. ✂ 2) Juki Jet-Air Serger MO-1000 – threads itself using air ✂ 3) Bernina 440 QE – before I moved over to Juki, I was a Bernina girl through and through. I still go back to my Bernina baby for anything other than straight stitching. ✂ 4) Bernina Artista 180 – this Bernina has the embroidery module, but I never use it. ✂ 5) Singer 99K (1954) – my Grandma bought this machine for my Mum, who gifted it to me and I brought it across the Atlantic to America in my hand luggage – quite a talking point at airport security. I taught myself to sew on this when I was 5/6 years old, and it means the world to me to have it with me now. ✂ 6) Janome Fastlane – this machine weighs only 5 lbs and I purchased it purely for doing 10 minute sewing demos in Manhattan, it's light enough that I could carry it to venues using the subway. For my needs, it served its purpose well. Note: I wouldn't recommend it as a main machine, or for retreats, or as a spare, or as a child’s starter machine. ✂ 7) KAYanEE Sewmaster (1940s) – this toy machine is my sewing room decoration.
