ok but legitimately i think the reason why kids arenât taking internet safety seriously is because the people who are telling us not to put our personal information out seem so out of touch. no one acknowledges the possibility of meeting very real teenaged friends online, they always say that everyone you meet is a 40 year old white man in disguise. because they arenât acknowledging things we know are true, it becomes a lot easier to dismiss the rest of what theyâre saying as well. internet safety lessons absolutely must keep up with the times and acknowledge the internetâs capacity for good if you want kids to take to heart warnings about its capacity for bad.
Some actual safety tips for teenagers:
1. Have proof they're a teenager first. More than just a picture, have a video call with them.
2. If you want to meet up with them, have your parents or a trusted adult come with you. Even if they are a proven teenager, its still good to have supervision in case any issues happen.
3. If you are talking to an adult, and they start being sexual in any way, you run the fuck away. It doesn't matter if they're 40 or 20. An adult inherently has a power dynamic that teenagers do not. And its up to the adult to act responsible about it. There's exceptions of course, if you're 16 and dating an 18 year old, that's not a problem, we're not talking about that.
4. Being in a server with adults or ran by adults is not inherently bad. Talking to adults is not inherently a problem, and will likely happen in any number of Discord servers. It is only an issue when they are acting sexual and show predatory behavior.
5. Look out for grooming behavior. It can be difficult, because at first it seems like innocuous behavior, like complimenting or giving gifts. Especially if you feel lonely and have low self esteem. And groomers actively target people like that.
If they start trying to isolate you, talk sexual with you, state they depend on you for emotional needs, blame you for their own actions, try to be secretive about the relationship- Then you need to talk to people you trust, block the perpetrator, and call the police on them.
6. If this does happen to you, remember this: It is not your fault. Even if you didn't listen to a single thing listed here, it is not your fault. It is the fault of the adults who knew better, and didn't care. It's not your fault.
To my followers: if any of you guys are underaged, please be very VERY careful on here, and donât fall for any of the tricks the groomer would use on you, just block them and report them.
âyou talk like a smart/pretentious personâ actually I just forget simple words constantly and am forced to rummage through my brain for the nearest synonym, which is usually twice as long and needlessly specific
#see also: the exact feeling im trying to convey with my sentences doesnt get across the same way without that specific word
If there was a sci-fi novel with a megalomaniac billionaire who was the son of an Apartheid emerald mine owner, and he was privatizing space exploration so the public no longer has a say in it...you know that would be considered bad, right? The heroes would fight to stop SpaceX.
The fact that anyone considers SpaceX as anything other than a continuation of the transfer of public sector science, that was run for the public good, into the hands of billionaires is a testament to our propaganda. Having space exploration controlled by one billionaire is bad.
Remember in the 60s when rockets launched and the credit was given to the scientists and astronauts that actually made it happen?
Now it's given to the billionaire who pillaged NASA tech and is now using it as his playground and promotion for his cars. That's bad. SpaceX is bad.
Pretty impressive that America has been at war for 20 fucking years and yet there have been essentially no anti-war films out of supposedly liberal Hollywood because itâs effectively impossible to make war movies without the consent of the US Military who only want to be depicted with jingoistic favourability.
âŠand no, âkilling your children made our soldiers sadâ flicks donât count
There is actually a Director of Entertainment Media at the Pentagon and the US military will literally read scripts and only support the ones that portray them in a way they approve of. They will provide financial support, allow no-cost use of bases, weapons, military personnel as extras, etc. But they will also literally not cooperate and force rewrites if they donât like anything. Theyâre literally controlling how the average person views the military.
I feel like there is a word for this
Iâve never seen this with the update and it makes it so much funnier
i understand that having a pet is really good for mental health (TRUST me i know) but otoh⊠if u cant consistently take care of ur pet u shouldnt own it. if u cant regularly change ur cats litter or walk ur dog daily or clean ur fish tank or WHATEVER then its cruel to keep ur animal in those conditions⊠ur their entire world u gotta treat them right. and if u cant do that then you need to reassess if youre really ready to look after another living being like that
You know what? This actually isnât funny at all because this really does happen. Baby boomers canât afford to retire; thatâs a big part of why millennials canât find jobs in their fields. And if they lose their jobs (which can mean a variety of things, including their companies finding an excuse to fire them so they donât have to pay anything for their retirement, which happened to my uncle and 5 people he worked with over one year), they arenât as desirable because theyâre retirement-age. The world has changed a lot since they got jobs they thought were supposed to be secure, and now their old strategies that used to work for finding a job donât work anymore and they donât know what does work. So a lot are desperate; I recently talked to a woman who had to be in at least her mid-60s who was begging on a street corner because she was replaced by a younger person and lost her job of 18 years, and itâs not the first time Iâve heard a story like that. A lot of people who were never rich to begin with lost a lot in the 2008 financial crisis and never fully recovered. Baby boomers didnât all just magically become financially secure as they got older.
This generation war bullshit is 100% manufactured to keep our anger misdirected. Itâs not baby boomers screwing over millennials. Itâs rich capitalists of every living generation screwing over baby boomers, their parents, gen x-ers, millennials, and gen z-ers all at once and all in different ways. And if we collectively realize that weâre not enemies and that we actually have a common cause with common enemies, itâll be really bad for the people doing this to us, which is why theyâre pushing the generation war thing so hard.
Well put. (Source: Writing About Writing Facebook page)
as a lawyer whoâs been practicing for six years now I can say with certainty that this 100% applies to lawyers

In a move that has sparked outcry from archaeologists, historians and locals, the Peruvian government has approved a multi-billion international airport near the famed site of Machu Picchu, Peruâs single most important tourist destination. Bulldozers have begun to clear millions of tons of earth for the project, which will be located in Chinchero, a picturesque Inca town.
Building the airport in this location will destroy an ancient landscape, one shaped by the Incan people with terraces and routes.
Critics also suggest that planes flying low over the nearby village of Ollantaytambo and its archaeological park filled with ruins and a massive Inca fortress with large stone terraces, would cause incalculable damage to fragile Inca ruins there and destroy the peace and beauty of the area.
The new airport will make access to the site much easier, and thus encourage greater numbers than ever before to visit.
But Machu Picchu is already overwhelmed by almost double the limit of tourists as recommended by UNESCO. [see also Indiaâs Taj Mahal - an incredible site simply reeling under a relentless, ineffectively managed tourist, both domestic and international, onslaught]
Itâs the constant battle between protecting the past and profiteering from it.

What the actual fuck
how about NO
The articles were dated 2019, so I went to the googles to update myself. The construction was halted due to Covid, but the plans are still ongoing. The article Iâm linking says that the site ultimately will not be able to service transoceanic flights, but that doesnât mean there wonât still be damage.

Also if you are ANEMIC and take IRON SUPPLEMENTS DO NOT TAKE WITH CAFFEINE. No coffee, caffeinated tea, etc. The caffeine will block iron absorption and you wonât actually get any of that iron that you just took!!
We don't need more diverse Disney movies, we need Disney to be shut down and broken up so that it stops dominating entertainment and choking out smaller creators and studios.

I can't remember where I heard this but I was totally blown away by the apparent class difference in werewolves and vampires portrayal, werewolves are rarely of ever shown as wealthy or upperclass, they're very likely poor or close to being lower class, while vampires are almost always very wealthy. I don't know what to do with this but it's just so facinating how class is reflected is almost everything in media including monsters
A reminder that the solution to hate crimes is not more cops. They are, and have always been, part of the problem
I want to say, also, that violence against Asian Americans is a real thing (especially in the wake of covid) but especially towards Southeast Asian and dark-skinned Asian women, as well as working class Asian women and sex workers. Your support for Asian people must extend towards them, which includes donating to them when there isn't an awful tragedy happening.
