panicked when i heard crouton.net was down so i went and got the crouton from the wayback machine in case anyone needs it
i understand that it's unreasonable to expect a band on world tour to play in every country in the world but i do think they should only be allowed to call it a world tour if they play in every continent. we need to make it embarrassing to say world tour and then not even step foot in africa
not everything in a story has to or should be "realistic" but in my opinion there's a level of illusion that should be maintained, and I think that's the actual problem that many people try to pinpoint with the "unrealistic" criticism. Dialogue shouldn't be written like an actual transcript of human speech, but should contribute to the illusion of a real person speaking. A character is a tool of the story, not a narrative, but we're trying to maintain the illusion that they are a person. Worldbuilding should exist to serve the story, not to be a perfect simulacrum of how every aspect of nature/society etc. would actually play out for real. But there should be the illusion that it could be real, that organizations and systems would operate in such a way, that people might behave in such a way.
in conclusion: "Is this realistic?" <<wrong question. "Does this serve the illusion or disrupt it?" <<now we're talking

I’m starting to realize we may not all be ready for Racism 102, aka “often times, you don’t think ‘I’m going to be racist,’ you just act on it.”
It does not matter what other reasons you have for being racist. It was still racist. White people lashing out on people of color when In Their Feelings About Something is still racism. White people objectifying people of color for WHATEVER reason is still racism.
Reading a book where a character does a racist thing, but it's narrated in first-person and they're not saying "I racistly attack the person of color with racist intent" so clearly nothing racist could be happening
It is also somewhat frustrating to see discussions of this framed in terms of mental health---almost exclusively white people's mental health, cited as a rationale for the racism---as though no person of color ever struggles with, for example, anxiety, depression, psychosis, or the simple stress of navigating society as a racialized person.

I love when someone I don’t even know has me blocked. An unknown storyline
