My friend Rayne has been running some Blades 68 (an update/expansion on Blades in the Dark) games which ive gotten to play in a couple of (the missions are done as one shots but the world is interconnected so that things have Consequences and then whoevers free that week can play) my character was a pre-rolled one Rayne made named Hiro but in the customization with the class I have (Hound, detective-y vibes) I can have a pet. Naturally I chose to have a pet dog his name is Columbo hes a basset hound who constantly has an unlit cigarette balanced on his ear that Hiro can take to smoke also this dog canonically smokes cigarettes now its unclear how he does it but he does <3

One of my favorite coworkers is a grumpy middle aged man named Dan he can be a bit angry at times but if you get Dan to like what youre doing you can get anyone to like what youre doing. My mom came into the store while he was at the register (she wouldnt let me buy her stuff for her) and he told her while I was there that she "raised a wonderful daughter" and when I got home my mom told me that he said I was one of the only things that made coming into work bearable and I almost cried over getting a good grade in my grumpy coworker Dan, something reasonable to want and possible to achieve

I visited family recently and went to a museum where I saw this

So I just today finished reading Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark which I'd heard nothing but good things about since it came out and all of them were correct it is an absolutely fantastic book.

But I've been rotating the fact that one of the blurbs on the back of the book describes it as a "cross between Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man and Buffy the Vampire Slayer" which officially makes it the second book I've read staring a badass black woman with a sword that was described as being like Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossed with something else. The other being A Blade so Black by L. L. McKinney which is described as Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossed with Alice in Wonderland. Besides both being about badass black girls with swords these are, wildly different books in so many ways, and they're not trying to be similar books. Ring Shout is an adult horror novela steeped in African American history and tradition, A Blade so Black is YA portal fantasy, which definitely doesn't shy away from the realities of being a black teenager in the US but doesn't explore it to nearly the same degree as ring shout.

Anyways both these books are good, though Ring Shout is on, an entirely different level frankly, and I think the moral of the story is that any story that is set in a real world modern or near modern fantasy setting and features a young woman becoming more self actualized while killing monsters with magic weapons will get compared to Buffy the Vampire Slayer no matter how different the actual theme or genre or tone is.

My favorite video game of all time is Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games 2010 because for reasons I still dont understand it was the only Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games game with a story mode until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics one was released. The 2010 winter Olympics story mode is that Bowser and Dr. Eggman steal all of the snow spirits so there's no snow and the Olympics have to be canceled and you as Mario and Sonic have to play Olympic sports to earn tickets to boss fights where, if you win, the snow spirit for the next region gets released and then you go through this all over again. Along the way you collect allies to help you do Olympic sports by challenging and beating them at their best sport. Also if you give Rouge the Bat moonstones she'll fly around and find past Olympic memorabilia for you. Its a perfect game.
