So, on Tiktok a popular point of fanfic discussion lately has been about fanfics including additional media, from art to playlists. The general consensus there seems to be that art is good, but playlists are cringey and will often result in abandoning the fic entirely just for its presence.
I'm very interested in what Tumblr's opinion is on this issue. Please reblog for sample size!
If a fic I'm about to read comes with a playlist done by the author, I think:
It's cringe and I'll abandon the fic for it
It's cringe, but I'll still read the fic
I'm neutral, but I won't look at the playlist
I'm neutral and maybe I'll open the playlist if I like the fic enough
I'm neutral, but like playlists enough to listen even if I don't like the fic
I like it, but have too particular of a taste in music to listen
I like it, but won't listen if I don't like any of the artists
I like it and will give the playlist a shot
I love it and plan on listening to the playlist in tandem or in my own time

Meiji period fashion was some of the best in the world, speaking purely from an aesthetic standpoint you can really see the collision of European and Japanese standards of beauty and how their broad agreement even in particulars (the similarity between Japanese and Gibson girl bouffants, the obi vs the corset, the obi knot vs the bustle, the mutual covetousness for exotic textiles, the feverish swapping of both art styles and subjects) combined and produced some of the most interesting cultural exchange we have this level of documentation for. Europeans were wearing kimono or adapting them into tea gowns, japanese were pairing lacy Edwardian blouses with skirt hakama and little button up boots. haori jackets with bowler hats and European style lapels. if steampunk was any good as an aesthetic it would steal wholesale from the copious records we have in both graphic arts and photography of how people were dressing in this milieu.

I have a love for both kimonos and bustle dresses, so I love seeing how the two fashions influenced each other over this period.ย And thanks to Pinterest, I have pictures!
Victorian tea gown that clearly started as a kimono.ย It still has the long furisode sleeves, but now theyโre gathered at the shoulder and turned around so that the long open side is facing the front instead of the back.ย Similarly the back is taken in with curved seams to fit the torso and pleated below that for the skirt.

This next oneโs modern, but it involves hoopskirts so Iโll add it in because it makes me so happy.ย Thereโs been different styles of wedding fashion that take kimonos and give them a more modern look.ย Often this involves taking a kimono and then cutting and resewing it into a new dress.ย Very pretty, but it canโt ever be worn like a traditional kimono again.ย But now thereโs another trend where the bride wears a hoopskirt with a white skirt, then you take the kimono and drape it on.ย The back of the kimono covers the front of the dress, the long sleeves fall across the sides or the back, and you still wear an obi with it.ย The result is pretty and the kimono itself doesnโt have to be altered at all.

Personally Iโm a big fan of Taisho Meisen kimono, which are what happen when the Japanese textile industry abruptly gets access to aniline dyes, new spinning and weaving technology, and the concept of Art Deco:
He didn't really become my favorite character until the third watch and after reading Mega City Blues.
Not Crushing Love though. Crushing Love directly contradicts canon and therefore is not canon to me.

I'll admit fault that at first I wrote him off as Generic Action Dude, but not totally generic because he's not white and straight like your standard-issue Action Dude. He's what he needs to be for the story, right?
But with rewatches, I noticed details that I missed before. Dolph doesn't use a whole lot of words, which already obscures who he really is. But there's another layer that obscures who he really is: he doesn't really know who he is, either.
Who is he? Who does he think he is? To break it down:
When does he smile?
In the few times he smiles in the franchise. he's usually engaged with his physical form. He clearly gets enjoyment out of performing feats of dexterity, agility, strength -- not specifically with his cybernetics, but his entire body.
Another instance is his playfulness and warmth with the people closest to him. Kissing Alex before an example of the above paragraph, and his bantering with Mute. A dry humor with Sarah when they were in the VR.
He cares about people. He came to Mute's aid when she was alone (proactively, for the record!), he tries to book it to save Bullfrog before the Niji 6 decide to make themselves a roadblock.
When does he get upset?
Alex betrays him. Jade dies. Alex reveals an intention to stir up mass casualties and chaos. The malware that will prevent him from saving Bullfrog.
We literally watch him in real time find out that his actions, now they're motivated by self-defeat, have consequences -- get Jade killed, get his team killed. He doesn't start showing proactive suicidal ideation (to be contrasted with a blasรฉ attitude about dying) with Alex's betrayal, nor when Jade dies, but only when he starts seeing the futility of fighting back against Eden; to live is to continue putting good people in harm's way. This isn't a mindset he always had, it's one that develops over the show's runtime.
Dolph believes in doing the right thing. He wants to care about people, he wants warmth and proximity, but tends to default to being cold, distant, aloof -- likely due to his military upbringing. The moments where it shows through the cracks, we start to see the person he wants to be, but never really got the chance to be just that; he keeps getting pushed away from the person he could be by circumstances and trauma.
as a writer you will have a specific deck of vocab words you like using a lot and when you read other peoples' work you will see a very clear spread of different vocab words on their end. this is why you need to read, to collect other writers' words like it's a card game
the nearest depiction of an animal or other sentient fantasy creature to you at this moment comes to life right where it is (i.e. cat photograph, shark plushie, dragon painting, etc)

assume it doesnโt know you (unless itโs actually a specific animal youโve met) and that itโs normal for its species and would do whatever was natural for it. including being too giant for and destroying the room itโs in. as well as dying immediately if its environment canโt support its life
i didn't really set out with the goal to make the longest fanfic (as of this writing) for captain laserhawk on ao3 but we sure as hell got there anyway
