life and death and other affairs
James sighed when he heard Sirius asking the same question for what felt like the millionth time.
āNearly,ā he replied, still frowning at his phone screen.
They were at their home; James occupied the couch while Sirius cooked something in the kitchen. Remus was sitting on a chair, a book in his hand, and Peter sat on the other watching television.
āYouāve been on that phone for two hours, now,ā Remus noticed. āAny particular reason?ā
āYeah, Iāve got a very important job,ā James told him. āItās work related.ā
Siriusās snort was so loud it stole Peterās attention from the Animal Planet documentary.
āWork related? Youāre sending a text, for Christās sake!ā Sirius cried out with a cackle. James hated this particular laugh of his best friend very much ā he usually used it while making fun of James.
āA text? How is that work related? Is it to your father?ā Peter asked. Fleamont Potter had been their manager since the beginning. He still was Jamesās and Siriusās, since Peter and Remus had quit the TV rout.
āItās for my co-star,ā James mumbled.
āDo you really think it wise to flirt with her before filming starts? Shouldnāt you at least get to know her or something?ā Remus asked in a skeptical tone.
Sirius, once again, laughed that damn cackle.
āIām not flirting with her,ā James retorted, but Sirius left the kitchen, some cooking instrument (that James couldnāt for his life say what was because he couldnāt cook a single meal) in his hand.
āHe already knows her,ā Sirius said. He was, James pondered, enjoying the situation far too much.
Was there no more⦠empathy between best friends? Shouldnāt Sirius be comforting James, instead of making his hellish life? At the very least not making fun of him, thatās for sure.
āHow come?ā Peter asked, eyes still on the rugby game.
āBecause⦠itās Lily Evans .ā
It happened all at once: Remus lowered his book, eyebrows so high they were hidden by his fringe; Peter looked at Sirius, mouth slightly agape and running elephants forgotten; and James groaned loudly, throwing the nearest object (his phone) at Sirius.
He missed quite spectacularly; he was good with a ball on his feet, but he couldnāt throw to save his life.
Sirius, still smirking, took the phone from the floor (the screen had already been cracked beyond worry) and used the password to see what his friend had managed so far.
āā When r u posting ur pic ?āā Sirius read out loud, and James felt his cheeks glowing. āThat took you three hours ?ā
āI didnāt say I was done!ā James cried out.
āSure. If Iād given you a couple more hours what would you have added? ā Itās James, btw ā?ā That damn cackle .
