You can revert Google to Before They Fucked It Up using a combination of udm14 and verbatim mode. It’s super annoying to do this every time, though. Here’s how to do it for iOS and macOS Safari.

Install Redirect Web and follow the instructions to set it up.

Configure a new redirect matching this image (I’ll copy paste the text blobs below.)

That’s it. Enjoy using Safari built-in search on Google as though it were years ago, when they didn’t try to make shit up and just searched for what you typed and asked you if you wanted your typos corrected.

If you can afford to, chip in a couple bucks to the Redirect Web developers to fund their $99/yr signing certificate. You don’t have to, I don’t believe? but there are precious few options for iPhone/iPad/Mac users who browse with Safari, and money helps people remember to keep caring about updating their Apple stuff.

The three text blobs are pasted into the Edit screen:

That’s it, save it and go do a search. Should be boringly free of crap and exactly as you typed it.

ps. Browser advocates, I recognize that other browsers have more readily-available solutions; literally every other browser makes this easier, so let me just stave you all off by saying that right up front. Please leave this for the Safari users; they shouldn’t have to change browsers to revert Google’s bullshit, so if we can just not all pile on about that in this particular case, it would be a lovely kindness to those that would benefit from this Safari tip.

pps. For other browsers where you can just add a custom search engine, follow the udm14 directions as usual but change &udm=14 to &udm=14&tbs=li:1

Currently obsessed with this late 1800s Victorian silk-and-velvet quilt my mother brought out of storage, which I was scandalized to have never seen before. The colors are startlingly vivid, and the effect is strangely modern. It was likely the work of my second great grandmother, who lived in Eastern Iowa in the last quarter of the 19th century. I walk around my home like this sometimes without heels. Have been for decades. Not for heels sake but because it’s good for reducing turn radius, controlling noise, and gives my arches and calves some alternate loading.

In some spot testing, I think these would be fine if I simply treated them as not having a heel at all. I prefer wedges but, like, this shoe model could well be part of Tumblr’s own history:

It being Elon's favorite game (or at least one so important to him that his biographer dedicates a lot of time to it) is.....really really funny.

Basically, imagine Civilization, but as a mobile game. So like if Civilization Revolution was even more dumbed down (that's a Civilization insult. That's devastating. It's devastated right now). For what it's worth, it's not a bad game. On the contrary, from what I could tell in the little bit of time I played it, it's a perfectly competent game with good design. But it's not a deep game by any means. I played through it once, won easily on my first go, then saw that the other playable characters had barely any differences between them.

Like, not to imply you can judge a book by its cover, but here's what it looks like

I play both full-scale 4X and also Polytopia. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Ask an expert to point out what’s most meaningful instead of being a size queen about this. There’s a much more threatening piece of information about Elon here than the size of his Civ-like.

Polytopia only has two win conditions. You pick one at the start of each game: Civ score, or Total domination.

Either you build the richest civilization in 30 turns.

Or your militarily destroy every other Civ on the map in as few turns as possible.

You can’t set a high score in either mode without focusing on the destruction of nearby civilizations, because they are all militaristic and expansionist. It’s colonialism reduced to concentrated essence. I am mediocre at it.

“Which mode does Elon play?” is a much more relevant response than shitting on a Civ-like for being lower density than Civ-actual. Go play Slipways and tell me how long it takes you to earn your sixth star on normal difficulty or higher. Slipways was a PICO-8 game before it was ported to PC. It took me eighty hours to reach a 6-star win.

Small games are not inherently worth being demeaning towards. Someone’s preference for a small game may simply mean they have severe ADHD. I’m perfectly capable of playing Civ, I just find it loathsome and boring after a hundred hours. Micromanaging people is a waste of time. Give me planets, like Stars! or Slipways. I don’t really enjoy Polytopia but I’ve played it. It gets boring quickly. I hate military conquest game.

The real reporting y’all are missing in your criticism of a video game is much more traumatic when you consider Elon’s origin culture and sociopolitical leanings:

The core win condition in Polytopia is to destroy everyone else.

Elon’s favorite game is a Civ-like where high-scoring requires the extermination of every other culture in the world.

And now almost nobody does. We have spaces on someone else's web page. Doesn't sound so bad, until you realize there's a really really finite handful of web pages on which to have a space, and when one or two of these web pages experiences some sort of cataclysmic shift at the hands of the few people who have a web page, the gaping void left at once in entire communities, on and offline, reveals what a critical cultural cornerstone one web page can be now.

This is not a good thing for any one web page to be.

This is what happened to BBSes. And to webrings. Community message boards are not forever, no matter what technology. I’m unsure if I can afford to pay for all my domain renewals, because I’m back in school and have a small fixed income and didn’t use a .com. Blogs require domains, or community hosting providers (‘freenets’). There is no such thing as digital permanence.
