Hi, welcome to my blog! You can call me Marshmallow (she/her).

i didn't understand this for the longest time because i thought i was being a good ally. so here's what i've learned since then

racism isn't about the racists or white allies (or their "guilt"). racism is about the victims of that racism. when a victim of racism speaks about racism, it's your turn to listen. and, if they want you to, empathize

the color of your skin has nothing to do with whatever you're about to say. if you're going to empathize, do it. if you're frustrated for them, then say that. you will not have to spell it out to them if you're a good ally or not. they will know

do not shame yourself, your race or anyone else as a response to hearing about racism. it is not about you. it is not about racists. shame the racists! call them out! but stop saying it to the victims!!! it's performative at best

you are not "one of the good ones" for not being racist. that is normal.

if someone corrects you and calls you out on something racist. listen to them. i dont care if they're "mean" or "aggressive". i dont care if they dont explain every single nuance to what you said. you can do your own research. just apologize and move on

fun fact about character development by the way. you can make them develop worse.

like I mean this very seriously as writing advice. the character should experience events and make decisions that make them different at the end of the story. they should be changed. they do not have to be improved.

they can get worse. they can make decisions of an increasingly terrible nature. they can stop taking risks on kindness. they can discover how much they can get away with. they can find religion, or abandon it, with negative effects on their moral creed. the character has to develop. the character does not have to grow.
