so today a public health official guy came into my class to give a lecture on disaster awareness and he was talking about house fires and mentioned that the reason people most likely die during a house fire is because they refuse to leave their pet inside or they go back to get their pet. and right when he said this my friend immediately turned his head and looked at me and in that moment I had the most complete and genuine acceptance take over my body. I would 100% in front of my family and Jesus himself walk straight back into some raging inferno that was once my house to go get my fat cat. I nodded back
the best part of this post is reading all the tags from animal people who would also go back to save their pets. like no hesitation. walk backwards from heaven straight back into hell. someone even said they would go back for their fish. amazing
If you are a person who would walk into a blazing inferno for your animal, and your pet has free movement around the house, hereās a training exercise that could help save you both:
1) Set off your smoke alarm or play the sound on your phone (if your home has no smoke alarms, pease get some!)
2) stand BY THE FRONT DOOR to hand out treats
Do this a couple times and then keep it up NO EXCEPTIONS. Accidentally set the alarm off cooking? Treats by the door. Smoke alarm sound on TV? Treats by the door. Changing your smoke alarm batteries twice a year like youāre supposed to? Give them a test run and your pets get treats by the door.
Most dogs and cats will clue in VERY quickly that hearing that specific sound means go to the front door and wait for treats.
If thereās an emergency and even if you leave by another way, you will still know the most likely place your pet(s) is and can direct first responders to help.
You can also do this for any other kind of emergency alarm. My friend had both her cats trained to go to the front door for a tsunami siren.
This also works really well for training cats to get into their travel boxes. Mine had to spend 3 days in boxes to move from GA to VT. 3 weeks before, I started giving them Sheba in the crate.
why Sheba?
the single serving packets have a VERY distinctive sound when you separate them.
kitties hear noise, kitties come running. Chase the canned treat into the box, then curse their naĆÆvety for falling for the trick. Again.

you dont have to be a parent to understand the horror of walking into a room to discover that the baby crawled out of his crib and onto that pottery wheel you forgot to turn off, and while the baby is spinning around and around, the dog is sitting there all calm, like a person, gently using his paws to fashion the babys soft cartilage head into something a little more modern.Ā it might be the classic tale of bad parenting, but lets see where the dog is going with this

"Indigo dyeing silk thread"
In case anyone wonders what the Japanese is saying
I just learned about this recently from a Viking reenactor! Indigo dye isn't blue until it oxidizes, so when you dye with indigo your cloth or thread doesn't come out of the water blue, it comes out and then reacts with the oxygen in the air and seems to spontaneously turn blue in front of your eyes. It's a really cool process to witness.
Scientists invented a fake disease. AI told people it was real: Nature.com
I'm a bit frightened for the time when someone less ethical than the person that did this decides to repeat the experiment but leave out the part where they come in later and announce that it was fake and people wind up diagnosed with the fake condition and all kinds of wacky hi jinks ensues.

Overlock Stitch by @clothes_reetzy
Damn, that's useful
Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!

Hey if you're coming to Washington DC for the Fourth of July: don't
We're having our turn in the heat wave and reports from the National Mall are brutal already this week. That screenshot is today's forecast (courtesy of the Capital Weather Gang) and tomorrow and Saturday are confidently going to be worse than this is.
The national Mall has no shade on the grass and you will be exposed to the sun constantly while also experiencing extremely high humidity. You will not be allowed a bag over a certain size to enter the mall and it has to be clear. You cannot have an insulated water bottle, it has to be clear. Reports are that there are two entrances to the area so you'll have to wait in line to even get in. I cannot find a number on how many cooling stations there are, except that it's "few" to "none" depending on what accounts I read online. Vendors are allegedly charging more than the posted prices and seem to be unprepared for actual crowds - these are the official vendors not the scam food trucks that park all around the edges of the mall. And that's the extent of the planning done because it was not a priority to make sure attendees don't pass out.
My local friends and I have reached a consensus that tourists are going to get extremely sick and none of us know what the EMT response or planning is on the mall this year. People are going to die.
Please stay out of this. It's not worth your health. Get your relatives and family to stop. I can give you recs for so many DC museums and things to do if you want to make the most of your trip. Any other local can too.
ROUND 1 ā Match 191 of 276
Hannibal Lecter (Hannibal)
Problematic because: "He is a cannibalistic serial killer who has somehow convinced half of Baltimore heās just a very cultured psychiatrist with excellent dinner hosting skills. He kills people as the Chesapeake Ripper, turns their bodies into artful murder displays, and serves human meat to guests, colleagues, and FBI-adjacent acquaintances who absolutely did not RSVP for that. Heās also helping the FBI investigate serial killers while being one, which is already insane levels of workplace misconduct. He withholds/helps hide Willās encephalitis diagnosis, lets him deteriorate, gaslights him through seizures, hallucinations, fugue states, and memory gaps, then frames him for multiple murders Hannibal committed. Will ends up institutionalised and doubting his own mind because his therapist was actively making him worse for curiosity, control, and emotional obsession reasons. Hannibal helps Abigail cover up Nicholas Boyleās death, turns himself into this creepy replacement father figure, fakes her death as part of framing Will, keeps her hidden, and then kills her in front of Will during the Mizumono fallout because his feelings got hurt and everyone had to suffer about it. He also kills Beverly Katz when she gets too close, manipulates Margot/Masonās family nightmare for his own interest, mutilates/maims people through other people as much as by his own hands, and generally treats everyone around him like ingredients in whatever emotional dinner party heās hosting that week." Propaganda: 1. "The man is a murderer, a cannibal, a manipulative psychiatrist, a terrible friend, an even worse therapist, and somehow still one of the most magnetic characters on television. Heās horrible because he understands people so well and then uses that understanding in the most invasive way possible. On top of killing people, he studies them, pushes them, rearranges their lives, and then acts wounded when they object to becoming part of his little design. I like him because heās elegant and monstrous without either side cancelling the other out. The food, the suits, the music, the art, the therapy room, the way he talks like every murder is a philosophical exercise - it all makes him fascinating, and it also makes him worse. He has taste, intelligence, patience, affection, curiosity, humour, and almost no respect for anyoneās right to remain intact. Truly terrible man." 2. "hannibal is genuinely so funny because everyone is like āwow dr lecter your insight is incredibleā and meanwhile he is the reason they need insights in the first place. like yes king, solve the murder you did. make dinner with evidence. give will graham the worldās worst therapy experience. stand there looking sad because the man you psychologically tormented has trust issues now. he is elegant, petty, terrifying, dramatic, and somehow gets offended when people donāt appreciate being lovingly manipulated into a murder family. awful psychiatrist. amazing character." 3. "The thing with him is that heās so composed that people forget how ridiculous his behaviour is. Heāll be sitting there in a gorgeous suit, speaking softly about transformation and appetite and loneliness, and then you remember he has been feeding people their colleagues. He frames Will, hides Abigail, kills Beverly, lies to Jackās face, plays Alana, toys with Bedelia, and still manages to act like HEāS the one suffering because Will didnāt run away to Europe with him fast enough. He is romance-coded. He is horror-coded. He is dinner-party-coded in the worst possible way." 4. "He has really interesting views on self actualisation, which come out through his therapy, is very charismatic, and a great chef. Also is played my Mads Mikkelsen." 5. "What a weird guy. It's great. A sophisticated man who somehow has the best schedule system in the world. A creative individual. He's completely obsessed with Will Graham. Enjoys irony and puns. It's just fascinating the lengths his obsession takes him to."
vs. A'Yark (Star Wars)
Problematic because: "She kills random homesteaders and farmers, kills her own tribesmen when they cross her, is xenophobic and kind of cold to her only surviving kid (who's a teenager trying to prove himself as a member of the tribe)." Propaganda: "She's chief of a Tusken Raider tribe, who are indigenous to Tatooine and suffer because the settlers farm moisture which is already scarce. In the end she kidnaps the guy who started one of those conflicts (for his own profit), and makes him work to provide water for the tribe. I also just like her abrasiveness. She's earned it (harsh environment + conflicts with settlers = she's outlived almost all her family by her mid-30s)."
Who should advance?
Hannibal Lecter
A'Yark

Last night, two earthquakes hit the city of Caracas in Venezuela. So far, reports show a death toll of 164 people, with nearly a thousand injured. Multiple hospitals and health centers have begun taking in patients and continue to expand their capacity to serve everyone in the area, and Interim President Delcy RodrĆguez has declared a State of Emergency.
If you are able, please consider donating to the Venezuela Humanitarian Fund. They dispense donations out to local organizations on the ground in Venezuela, and you can donate as little as 2 dollars. If you know of any local organizations who are able to take donations online, please share them.
I am lucky in that my friends and their families from and in Venezuela are okay, and my heart is with everyone affected by this disaster.
The death toll has risen to 589 dead and over 3,000 injured with hundreds of people still missing.
There are, of course, tons of local organizations and efforts ongoing. These often involving donating through Zelle or other mobile pay apps and I know that many people are less likely to donate if there are āextra steps.ā
In light of this, Iāve added a few larger, āeasierāorganizations providing aid in Venezuela rn that you can donate to.

Maryland will become the first US state to ban surveillance pricing in retail stores, after passing Protection from Predatory Pricing Act.
Jesus fucking christ that this exists in the first place
I WAS FUCKING WONDERING WHAT THOSE DIGITAL PRICE TAGS WERE ABOUT SUDDENLY i had hoped they were so the workers didn't have to finagle those little papers into the slider part anymore š
Hi, yes, that is the OFFICIAL excuse made to me by the guy replacing the paper tags with digital ones at my local Walmart, but the end goal is to remove the numbers off the shelf entirely, replacing them with QR codes that you have to scan with the appā¦. Which requires your login informationā¦.. and also stores your card information so even if you didnāt use your Walmart account at the physical checkout, if you used a card they recognize, they assign that purchase to your Walmart account purchase history.
I explained very clearly to the manager my issue with the meat section not having the price tags listed, and they claimed it was only going to be for the meat, since meat is by weight, and the price of each item is printed on the packs of each item.
Sure. Thatās how they get their foot in the door. Fast forward not even two weeks, and here we are:
Bar codes. No prices, no item descriptions. No price stickers on the individual items. Heck, not even the name of the item that is SUPPOSED to be there.
No. The only way to see the price is to scan it on your phone app, which is also recording what you looked at recently, as a way of gauging what you might be looking for in the future.
So hereās what weāre gonna do gang:
Every time you go into a store that has implemented these price-less tags:
Take 1-3 items up to the cash register. Ask the cashier for the price, or hit the price check item on the self checkout, which will likely call over the attendant.
Express that you didnāt actually want it, you just couldnāt see on the shelf how much it was.
POLITELY, AND WITH A THANK YOU FOR THE PRICE CONFIRMATION, Give the items to the cashier or attendant to put back.
When they inevitably try to push the app, politely decline. If pressed for why not, say you donāt want to have to carry your phone in-hand the whole time you are shopping in order to see how much things cost. (Not having cell service or data to use the app is NOT a valid excuse, as stores already often have complimentary WiFi AND more stores will provide WiFi rather than give up on this push for surveillance pricing)
If itās a shelf-stable item, the cashier will have to set it aside, taking up room in their limited operating space, and eventually pass it off to someone to put in a holding area to put back later. If itās a fridge/freezer item, it might have to get tossed due to food product sale regulations.
In either case, you are making it a pain in the ass for them to have these digital bar codes. Tie up the checkouts. Give the employees more busywork that the company has to pay them to do. Hurt their bottom line having to toss the pint of ice cream you carried around in your cart for 20 minutes before giving it back to the cashier.
Yes, call your reps. Yes, push for more legislation like this in more places. But also take an extra minute out of your shopping trip to MAKE IT HURT for companies to pull this shit.
I've seen some people in the notes express (very fair) concern that this is only going to inconvenience already under-paid laborers, and not have any impact on corporate. While I can't speak for every company or every store, I do work in a grocery store and I can tell you this is precisely the kind of thing that would have an impact, especially if people are doing it en masse. Stores absolutely track their shrink numbers, and they do draw distinctions between what gets stolen, damaged, or wasted for other reasons. If people are making it clear that the reason they're bringing things to the cashier is that the prices are not adequately represented on the displays, and rather than improving business it's wasting product, slowing down transactions, and causing confusion and mistrust in customers, that is a language that shareholders speak.
A real reason to give when asked why you can't scan with the app - say your phone or device doesn't get enough signal to function inside the store. Or the wifi just "isn't working well enoug" & you're just here for a quick essentials in-&-out trip, not a leisurely shopping stroll...
These are excellent additions. Another thing you can do is tell them you don't have your phone with you (this works best if you are willing to leave your phone in the car or at home, of course, but putting it on airplane mode at the bottom of your bag or backpack also works), and ask the employee to scan it for you with their phone. Obviously, they will not want to do that, and you can ask them why not. Then, depending on whatever excuse they give you, go ask another employee -- or the manager. I understand that we don't want to make life harder for the people who work in the stores, but the only ways to get companies to rethink this are going to have to inconvenience the workers to some degree.
Another thing you can do, if your are the kind of person who can do this, is print up a bunch of fliers that explain exactly what's going on with those digital bar codes in the store, then plant yourself somewhere firmly on public property that is close to the store, but where they can't have you trespassed because you are on public property, and hand those fuckers out. Most people will not know the truth about the tags and will believe whatever they are told by the store/company. We have to spread the word if we want mass action.
idk if this is an usamerican thing or not but it always blows my mind as a small european country resident that yall have many names and types of apples???? what do you mean its not just red yellow or green??? why is it so complicated??? who is granny smith????

Listen that doesnāt even account for all the weird shit local farmers are getting up to.
May I present the best apple:
the world is so big and beautiful
I couldnāt resist starting another Luminous once I saw this line of fabric. Itās called Color Collage by Shelley Davies from Northcott and itās been in the back of my mind for ages.
Iām using six colours in the piecing, which should make it 92āx109ā (unless I mess with the pattern even more and take one of the rows out completely) which will technically be a king size LOL The seventh colour pink is gonna be used on the binding so I get to use alllll the colours we had in stock in the shop š
Someone please stop me, I canāt stop making these fucking things lmao šššššš I had a plan to do something else but I couldnāt help it!
Okay, blocks done and middle rows complete!
I did take one row out of the centre so there are only two red centre blocks instead of three. 109ā is too big for my queen bed, but I can work with 101ā LOL
Technically this will still fit a king at 92āx101ā, but I am a blanket hog and that feels like a really skinny king to me.
ALSO??
Because I altered the amount of rows (downsizing) but did not alter the amount of blocks I made, I ended up with just enough left over to make two matching pillow cases! They are even on point like the quilt.
This is gonna look spectacular on a bed.
Itās so beautifulā¦. šššššš
And itās so fucking big LOL
Not as big as the greyscale king for my brother, but still. It feels big.
As you can see a little from the roll on the back of the long arm, I found a fun rainbow universe print to put on it with all the colours on the front.
Iām quilting the pillowcases too, though in a tighter pattern so they can handle more washing.
I canāt wait to put this on a bed.
I love it so much. My favourite Luminous, I swear.
The pillow cases look so good too. As I mentioned, I quilted them much tighter than the quilt so they can be thrown in the wash a lot more. Same pattern, just smaller design.
Itās so busy, I could stare at it for hours finding things in the prints.
Also? I love the pink binding. I really did want to use every colour, so this was a nice compromise to having to resize everything LOL
The backing is also so busy LOL You can hide a lot of pet fur on both sides of this thing.
The pillowcases turned out great. I used the leftover from the backing to back the pillow cases so that everything matches. And theyāre envelope style so the pillows wonāt slip out. Hate it when the pillowcase slips off my pillow.
I had to sew three 45ā wide strips of fabric together for the backing to fit on the long arm. Since the quilt was only 101ā at its widest, I had a whole 30ā strip that was usable and perfect for this.
if you are a parent, or may become one, or you are otherwise likely to arrive in the situation of caring for a child while they eat, promise me this: if a child doesn't like a certain food or food group, you will ask them WHY. and specifically, you will pay attention to either confirming or ruling out "it makes my mouth itch" or "it makes my stomach hurt," both of which are medically important info that children may not provide unprompted. which i know because this PSA has been brought to you by "i spent my entire childhood and much of my early teens eating peas and lentils while wondering why everyone else liked the Violently Itchy Mouth Sensation so much, like were they a bunch of legume masochists or something, before i finally realized that Violently Itchy Mouth Sensation was in fact a sinister demon appearing only to me, and her true demonic name was: Legume Allergy"
Do not let your child suffer from spicy bananas!
