americans are sooo desensitized to guns and sometimes it manifests in ways that affect your media literacy. like remember in the first episode of sherlock when john watson opens up his drawer and you see a gun in there and youre supposed to understand that this is narratively significant and conveys his suicidality as well as his willingness to skirt rules and laws but the first time i watched it i was like oh well theres his desk gun. lots of people have those
I just really love how human this mission feels. Both the crew and the ground making fun jokes and references ("amaze, amaze, amaze!") or things like Glover saying "hello baby!" to his family back on Earth, or how "moon joy" has become the team's favorite phrase, or those craters being named "Integrity" and "Carroll," or the astronauts being encouraged to describe how seeing the moon makes them feel (and doing so to a moving degree), and also describing how much working and talking together improves their capabilities on all fronts, and both sides constantly telling each other how excited they are and that there's "smiles all around" Not that missions like Apollo never had stuff like this, but it's different hearing it all live. Wonderful experience all around.

No. I'm fine, really. I'm just ugly crying about Carroll crater. A bright spot on the far side of the moon. I'm fine. I'll stop crying eventually.
notice how javadi seems interested in surgery once she has someone selflessly encouraging her. notice how javadi is fascinated by the technique when she’s doing it for her own benefit. notice how she was good at it.
victoria could go into surgery. it’s not that it’s too gory or stressful or finicky for her, it’s that anytime she’s even considered choosing that specialty, she hasn’t been centering herself in that decision.
science has always been political. what gets studied. what doesnt. who gets to do the studying. on and on and on.
scientists on this post: yuuuup 👍
people who aren't scientists: um actually ☝️
This is akin all those hot takes about the 2k bug being an hoax:
"Remember when they told us every computer was going to crash on 1/1/01 and there would be chaos and then nothing happened?"
Yeah, I remember. And I'm sure every programmer and sysadmin that contributed the billion person/hour global effort to prevent it also remembers.
No one talks about acid rain anymore, either. And that's a very good thing.
see also START and START II, which significantly reduced nuclear stockpiles
International cooperation is actually so effective that most people don’t even notice it happening, and then erroneously believe it can’t solve anything.
Fixing issues before they develop into actual disasters is such an underappreciated thing it hurts at all levels.
We don't talk about acid rain because there isn't any more acid rain because when acid rain started happening and we learned that the cause was mainly sulphur oxide and carbon monooxide from car exhausts, countries all over the world made it a law that car companies had to produce cars that produced less exhaust with better effectivenes (burning the fuel all the way to CO2 instead of the halfassed CO) and oil rafineries to remove the sulphur from the gasoline in the first place.
We don't talk about computers crashing because of the turn of the century, because thousands of programmers worked very hard to write updates and patches for Every Single Program humanity as a whole used back in 1999 and then somehow managed to failtest, distribute, and update every single device and system, be it an online or offline one before the midnight of the 1st january of 2000.
On a much smaller scale, no one ever commenta or notices cleaners and housekeepers doing their job - be it at home or at whole buildings - because they always make sure that there's nothing to notice. But don't be fooled - at any point of your life you are one week of them not doing away from swimming in trash and filth with nothing to eat and nothing clean to wear. Only then you would notice.
Now it's time to do that thing again and make sure that we don't kill our whole planetary ecosystem within the next century.
Adding to this the global use of vaccinations. Public health officials (the sane ones anyway) now realize that vaccinations are so effective at preventing health crises that it has caused a fraction of the population to think that they do nothing or cause unrelated issues.
I am glad we do not deal with smallpox and polio anymore, and that parents that take advantage of modern medicine rarely have to mourn the loss of their children due to childhood disease.
pov: you’re the only one who’s gone to therapy
I know this is a deeply American thing to say but I am begging everyone to stay the fuck away from military recruiters. Especially high school kids. You are going to be seeing an unholy amount of them in schools or around schools or literally anywhere kids are known to congregate. THIS INCLUDES ALL FORMS OF ROTC. Stay the fuck away from military recruiters. As someone who’s familiar with entirely too many branches through entirely too many friends and family, including my partner, recruiters are authorized to say literally any fucking thing they think will make you sign on that line. They cannot and will not deliver on those promises. They need bodies for the war they’re pretending is only now starting up again. That’s all you are. A body. Stay the FUCK away from the military.
RECRUITERS LIE
im gonna need yall to understand that langdon going to rehab was a BLESSING and not a punishment. santos literally saved his life by exposing his drug addiction. he could've been dead. but instead he got off scot-free with no consequences at all. he got his job back and his family stayed with him. you do not need to defend him at all
langdon being caught so off guard when al hashimi refused to let him talk over the younger students and residents. santos almost crumbling at the sight of criticism. javadi being allowed to answer all the questions from al hashimi and clearly not being used to actually getting to make the calls. mckay having someone who understands what she’s been through and allowing herself to talk about it. samira actually getting an apology from robby after al hashimi made him.
these people are experiencing for the first time what happens when you have an attending that doesn’t play favourites, guides properly and appropriately, and doesn’t use his power against them when when having a bad day. i’m astounded how much we can tell by their reaction to al hashimi how robby has been failing in his role either in the past or in the present
robby saying that he’s not sure that al-hashimi is fit to run this place when all he’s seen her do all day is excel at treating patients both medically and emotionally with a high level of professionalism and the only messes she’s had to clean up are his. for whom does the bell toll
It cracks me up that Joy Kwon, an American Korean who Western media loves to slot into that duty‑driven overachiever and tireless‑workhorse stereotype, be the one to triumphantly claim her right to clock off on time.
Legend. Unionise that floor, diva.
Addicts who have broken through to the other side see things others don't and KNOW how to approach it.
Cassie McKay sees through Michael Robinavitch. And he knows it. Which is why he fled from her.
But she's the only one who's tried so far. And not in an accusatory way, not yelling at him, or snapping, or blaming him. She sees what he's doing and she approached him with kindness and respect and DIGNITY. She has knowledge of this. And she KNOWS.
Put some GOTdamn respect on my girl Cassie McKay for being the ONLY ONE to clock Robby on wanting to hurt himself.
