Has a baleen whale ever been kept in captivity for any length of time? If so was it successfully released or did it die?

there have been several instances of young baleen whales running afoul of something and being captured for rehabilitation, yes! they were mostly gray whales.

which makes sense, gray whales are slow enough to get caught in the first place and hardy enough to not immediately stress themselves to death over being poked and put in a tank (as long as hundreds of pounds of delicious shellfish are on offer, anyway)

none of them were ever kept very long, they were rehabilitated to a healthy weight and then released. (healthy weight for a juvenile gray whale is almost 20,000 lbs. BIG baby)

#I'm just wondering that HOW do they get these animals out of the rehabilitation center #like are these located right next to a sea with gates to the sea #or do they have to lift them up somehow and transport somewhere #and is there anything strong enough to lift anything of that size #have to check what lbs is in metric system now cos I don't speak other units #animals

So stupid. My astigmatism is really bad today especially on my left eye, so to make it better I've been wearing my eyeglasses, but my eyeglasses are now causing headache so I have to take them off which causes my left eye to scream for the eyeglasses cos the astigmatism is so bad today :|

I guess I'll have to take the glasses off and out then back on whenever my headache comes back just so that I won't get a headache because of the astigmatism. Really wish that I had a monocle now cos my eight eye sees just fine but my left makes everything messy.

#gotham #people are so angry about it cos their ship didn't become canon or whatever #but i found the ending actually good and so much better than that #it was maybe rushed because FOX cancelled the show and then said ok make a 5th season then but you ONLY get to make it short #so it's like half the amount of episodes than normal but I still really liked the ending.#I don't remember how Dexter ended but I think they ended it well considering they ended it before it got too many seasons #most series don't get that kind of treatment. (Also the first sequel was ass but the next ones pretty good.)#Life on Mars UK had so good ending it left so much in the air wich was definitely better than if they explained it all #tag yourself

The bubble is nigh.

Random self-discovery era going on in my life rn. I've been struggling with the feels of not being enough to others what comes to creative stuff and storytelling, and how I feel like it's difficult to create anything if I should first create a plot which I usually cannot come up with out of thin air. UNLESS I SEE OR HEAR SOMETHING THAT WORKS AS AN INSPIRATION.

I have tried brainstorming before and it works to some extent but I feel like when I do it, it makes everything feel and sound so very forced. Like I created it as a result of brainstorming, not through a naturally, randomly occured inspiration.

Recently it hit me that I actually am better at improvisation than planning. I like doing things spontaneously. I like looking at images and go "this is the one, I want to draw this one" or look at an image, have my brain process it and come up with a random fanfiction bit I need to write down. Or when making videos, I like it when I just skip a script altogether LIKE I USED TO, and start building a video from what I see and by testing things and seeing what works the best and just, literally improvising from there instead of going through everything beforehand and carefully writing down what I want. Because I never know what I want until I see it, and I only see it when I improvise and test things as I go.

These thought were woken up because I've been working on one of my fanedit video projects for the first time in years and I had to start from scratch, and I was trying to do a script because that was what we always started with at media school, but then I realized that I don't need it. I have everything I need in my head, I only made a list of what footage to use so that I don't forget anything, but other than that, the "script" is completely in my head because I remember every single video clip I'm about to use and where to put it, and I'll just improvise all that into a complete video edit that hopefully will work out and is liked by my target audience.

So what I have learned is that it's waste of time if I try to force myself to write plans and scripts when I work the best when I improvise and test out things as I go. So I will continue doing things the way I did them before too since it seems to work for me.

Really hate that most people don’t understand the difference between “self-expression” and “artistic-expression.”

I say this as someone who sells pottery, and many people who see my art assume I am using art as an outlet to “express myself.”

I am not.

I use art to challenge myself. A lot of what I do is the equivalent of doing a hard sudoko or a half marathon, answering the question of “can I do this?”

I use art to question things and explore ideas. Finding physical synthesis between concepts and working out a design to its end state.

I use art to make money. I make some things just because I suspect they’ll sell well, and I keep making them when they do.

This idea that an artist is “putting themselves out there” every time they create is not only stupid, but harmful, and it kills critique and analysis.

Yes every creative work is influenced by its creator, but the most preliminary step of analysis is to define the purpose of a work of art (functional, narrative, entertainment, persuasive, decorative, ceremonial, etc.) and a vanishingly small percentage of that is self-expression. Even then, it’s generally tied to the self’s relationship with something else—perception, society, etc.

It’s very tiresome to have people assume they know you because they like (or dislike) your art, to make assumptions about who you are and how you approach the world. It’s nothing new— people called the Impressionists insane and the Fauvists degenerate. And now people are expected to hand out their identities and traumas to prove they have the right to explore certain subjects.

But to actually understand art, you have to contextualize it beyond assuming it’s just what the artist felt like making at the moment and it’s somehow coming from their deepest soul, or you’ll badly misinterpret most art you come across.
