Spoilers!!!! Okay I just finished watching the RWRB movie so here are some of my thoughts on the characterization of Alex and Henry that nobody asked for:
I do really think that Taylor and Nick did such a good job with what they were given. However, one of my favorite parts of their story is the fact that Henry had been in love with Alex and pining for him for years, and in the movie it feels like those feelings were reduced to mere attraction instead of love. I know it’s only an adaptation and they need to change things to save time, but in my opinion the depth of Henry’s feelings could have been written in an efficient manner.
And another thing I felt was missing was Alex’s decision to go to law school instead of focusing on politics right away. It’s just such a huge step for Alex’s growth as a person to finally realize that he can do something of value and help people without being exactly like his parents. And don’t even get me started on Ellen and Oscar still being happily married.
Like I said, I do understand that they had to cut things for the sake of pacing and stuff like that, but these elements of Alex and Henry’s characters just felt so essential to me and they feel a bit off without them. I’m also a bit sad that they rushed the scene where Alex goes to Kensington to fight for Henry, they don’t even get to have a passionate reunion kiss and Henry seems to change his mind so suddenly. It felt like the first half of the movie was so full of passion and fun but it was missing in the second half.
