I think a lot about this one twitter post where someone, lacking a few crucial pieces of information, says "you know jesus wasn't real" (not really the popular stance among non-religious scholars these days, but fair enough) "and neither was muhammad" (the degree of historical attestation here is a bit different)
the first point's buy-in is that multiple accounts fabricate the presence of a preacher, the second point's buy-in is that the entire arabian peninsula woke up one fine morning and decided it was conquered
Recently managed to activate the most amazing infodump trap card.
I was driving through Vermont with a friend, and we pulled over at a tiny shop offering Maple Items. We were on the state highway, not the interstate, so "pulling over" meant "squeezing my tiny car into a parking bay the size of a broad highway shoulder."
As we got out of the car, an older woman emerged from behind the building where she had been pruning her roses. She introduced herself as Tammy.
Her shop offered the promised variety of Maple, but also a number of small antiques and a plethora of dog figurines, plaques, and clearly-hand-stitched garden flags.
A huge purple ribbon hung on the wall behind the register, along with many pictures of small dogs. This was no county fair ribbon. It was the size of my torso. The material had the soft sheen of actual silk.
As I placed my purchases on the counter, I asked, "Do you... Breed dogs?"
Yes. She does. She has bred Yorkies for the last 40 years. Her mother bred Yorkies before her. The purple ribbon was from her national championship winning Yorkie.
You may be expecting that the infodump was going to be about Yorkies.
It was not.
It was about 40 years of drama in the Yorkie breeding community. Where – you must understand – the judging at shows is often about who you're in with, not about the dogs. This is especially true when Tammy's opponents win anything.
And Tammy's mother! Well. Phyllis has been on the Yorkie scene since Yorkies were invented. Because of this, many women of equally venerable age hold deep grudges against Phyllis. The sort of grudges that result in episodes of Midsommar Murders.
This led to deep injustices against Phyllis on the part of judges and prevented her dogs from winning so often she retired from the scene. Judging is all about who you're friends with, after all.
After 20 years in hiding, Phyllis – the One True Queen of Yorkie Breeding – hatched a plot. She may have been out of the show circuit, but she was still breeding dogs. She entered an absolutely perfect bitch in the national competition, but sent her with a handler rather than go in person.
None of the usurpers knew who this dog belonged to, and in dog-breeding circles this Does Not Happen. This could have resulted in further injustices, but Phyllis was crafty. She knew this tournament was being judged by a man from the UK, who knew naught of the drama in the US Yorkie Empire.
With these advantages – and being the best dog there – Phyllis's bitch won the highest honor at the show.
Incensed by this insult to their ill-gotten supremacy, the other owners descended on the handler after the show, demanding to know for whom he was working.
"Phyllis," said he.
The name of the overthrown queen evoked horror in the usurpers.
"PHYLLIS!? She's still ALIVE!???"
Yes, Phyllis yet lived, and this bitch – the dog, not the woman – went on to mother Tammy's current dogs. One of whom, Lucy-Fur, is the reincarnation of Tammy's sister (also Lucy). This is certain for two reasons.
Firstly, Sister Lucy absolutely went straight to Hell upon her death, and Lucy-Fur the dog is positively as evil as Sister Lucy was.
Secondly, Sister Lucy always said when she died she wanted to come back as one of Phyllis's dogs because "mom treated the dogs better than us."
I love living in 2026 because I go to Home Depot and buy a 5-gallon bucket for $4. I say I do not want an email receipt. They know my email anyway because I once ordered a mop online. They email me to ask how I like my 5-gallon bucket. I do not reply. They email me again. They would like my feedback. Reminder ‼️I have purchases to review. Did my 5 gallon bucket live up to my expectations? 3 minute survey!!

This is why you need to mask on an airplane for covid. HEPAs only keep you safe if the particles get to them before they hit your lungs.
Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.
Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.
There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.
i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.
I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case
The reason your snacks are unsatisfying is that you need both carb and protein.
Carb starts your engine, protein keeps it going.
No carb, engine don’t start. No protein, engine dies out fast.
Easy carb add on:
Cookie
Fruit (canned or fresh)
Chips
Piece of bread
Popcorn
Crackers
Easy protein add on:
Nuts
Spoonful of nut butter
Cheese
Roasted chickpea snacks
Glass of milk (dairy or non dairy)
Small canned sausages or similar
Sugar in there.
I am pleased by people messaging me telling me that after adding a carb or protein to their snacks or meals they feel more satisfied all day. Yes, my plan is working. People are getting through their days with less hangry.
My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
I feel like contouring is lowkey racist
Is this a joke?
Noo lol I knew I’d regret phrasing it that way. This is tumblr, after all…
It’s not “people who contour are themselves automatically racist” but that the desired face shape created by contouring is one that, at the end of the day, pretty much reflects existing white standards of beauty. A thinner, pointier nose, smaller chin, high angled cheekbones and (on occasion) smaller lips. Also if you’re darker skinned you have to use a much lighter shade of foundation thus ending up with an overall lighter face.
I probably could have phrased that better.
No, you are absolutely correct. In fact it is not even lowkey in the performance arts/entertainment world. I’ve known how to contour since I was 9, because I was in ballet. I was taught by an older Asian dancer who told me that I was already darker than everyone else, my face couldn’t look different too. So she showed me the basics, then left me with a picture of a white person as the goal to emulate.
It’s always been explicit and intentionally racist in terms of what is considered correct contouring technique is to emulate white associated features. Which is not to say that contouring is bad, but it is good to ask ourselves why we do not contour to make our noses look wider and more distinguished. Or why we don’t shadow and highlight to make the face look perfectly round? While contouring is not bad ( and is actually very cool to literally be able to control the way people perceive your face, it’s like magic) it’s good to ask ourselves why we contour the way we do.
it’s phrenology and eugenics.
that may be true my mind is a bit fuzzy today but the practice of which facial structure is desireable is maybe phrenology idk
It’s not phrenology, but physiognomy: a much older, but no less racist, classist, sexist, etc pseudoscience, which claims to measure people’s characters based on physical traits. Stuff like “criminals have heavier brows” or whatever. It focuses on the face, but can also include stuff like height and build. And yeah, white European idealized features tend to be the “good” ones, however did you guess?
Phrenology, by contrast, just looks at bumps on the skull, the idea being that the bumps will reflect what parts of the brain are more active. It’s bullshit on multiple levels (yeah localization of brain functions is a Thing but not the way phrenologists think and it certainly doesn’t affect the shape of the skull?? those bumps are largely just from muscle attachments tbh) and basically no one takes it seriously anymore.
Physiognomy, though, has stuck around in our broader culture. Whenever you suggest you can tell someone is “evil” from just a photo, you’re practicing physiognomy! So maybe we can all stop doing that? Please???
This is a fucking new one
THANK YOU
Friendly unfriendly reminder that "Ovulation is like an animal being in heat and makes you stupid" has been a keystone of western misogyny pretty much since Europe worked out what periods are.
Yall dumbfucks. You absolute doorknobs.
If you read or listened to the full quote, you would know that the next sentence she says is "Because I don’t know that it’s going to get done right now, the way this Congress is composed and the way they have been treating civil rights issues.” I.E., in this moment we need to be focused on the midterms because the current makeup of Congress is absolutely not going to pass the VRA, there is zero hope of that happening "anytime soon" aka before the midterms. It might not be able to be passed after the midterms due to the presidential veto and how slim the majority in Congress might be.
In no way does she say that the VRA will never be passed or should not be revived eventually; she in fact says the opposite, that she hopes it will be passed by a new, more progressive Congress and Presidential administration. But if we don't focus on the midterms right now, we may never get those things!!!!!!
Also the comment about her losing the election because "nobody likes her" - the 2024 election was incredibly close, especially considering she only ran for 107 days. AND considering she is a black & Asian woman, and that people are incredibly biased against those groups. Despite those factors, Kamala Harris came very very very close to becoming president and polling suggests she is the leading Democratic candidate for 2028 by a HUGE margin. "Nobody likes her" is not merely reductive, it's fucking stupid and completely incorrect.
Every day online leftists prove to me that they a) don't understand the concept of voting as harm reduction and b) have about the same level of literacy as MAGA.
i like how rabidly angry liberals get when you suggest demanding more of our politicians so we can halt and maybe one day reverse the far right-oriented ratchet effect the US has been experiencing. they start calling you illiterate and shit for daring to want more of elected officials that have proven over and over again to be completely disinterested in helping us actually survive. i’m so glad you’re satisfied with the crumbs of lip service they give us but don’t expect everyone else to throw their unconditional support at someone who wasn’t interested in even hearing us out when leftists wanted to work with her on issues that actually matter. imagine being so petulant and so far up your own ass you flagrantly insult the intelligence of people unwilling to accept less than the bare minimum from our elected officials
THIS IS THE HARDEST I HAVE LAUGHED IN SO LONG YOU HAVE CURED MY DEPRESSION
This is one of the greatest posts I’ve ever witnessed. The payoff was amazing.
My roommate heard it going and went “OH MY GOD is it EVER going to resolve?” then the payoff hit and she busted up laughing
MAGA boomers SHOCKED by 20y/o commie speaking fluent hog
Hog 201 for anyone interested in trying this:
Bodily autonomy (like abortion, anti draft, etc) -> “The government shouldn’t be able to force anything on my body I don’t want.”
Anti surveillance -> “I don’t trust big government/big tech (big brother if you’re feeling frisky) with the ability to spy on me and my family.”
Immigration -> “Next to all of us immigrated at some point, I don’t see why the elites get to decide who’s allowed to be where. What’s to stop them coming for me?”
Climate Change -> “Big oil shouldn’t get to determine whether or not I get to go places. I don’t want to be dependent on some big business to survive.”
State Violence -> “I don’t want the goddamn secret police breathing down my neck! I trust my community a whole hell of a lot more to help me than I do the state!”
The vast majority of conservatives think of themselves as underdogs being repressed by the government/the elite, and they value personal freedom (specifically their personal freedom, they don’t care about other people). The will almost always agree with leftist points if you can find a way to blame the problem on their vague enemies (useful, since rich people are the root of most problems), and tie it back to their ability to say fuck everyone else. NEVER appeal to science, theory, logic, or human goodness. Make it seem as if you are a paranoid lunatic who trusts no one. They love it.
@solipseismic thank u for the insight 🫡
