MelayneSeahawk 101
Icon is one I have been using forever, using art by Thalia Took. Format and most questions for this post ruthlessly stolen from @noodlefrog-omens.
Who Am I?
Hi, I’m MelayneSeahawk (pronounced like Melanie). I’m a thirty-something writer, cosplayer, and theatre-maker, based in Seattle, WA (I swear to Sappho, I’ve been calling myself Seahawk longer than I’ve lived in this city). I’m a Jewish, disabled, genderqueer, panromantic, grey-ace lesbian (my intersection needs a roundabout); my pronouns are she/her and they/them. While I tend to stay away from “politics” on tumblr, this blog is a pro-LGBTQ+, pro-BLM, pro-sex, pro-sex-worker space. No TERFS, no SWERFS, no truscum, no antis. Just…if you have issues with SJWs and the progressive “agenda”, we probably won’t get along.
Where Else Can You Find Me?
While I originally stole the name from a book, if you see Melayne online somewhere, it’s probably me. I have a defunct LJ/DW, deleted insta and twitter, and I’m on hiatus from FB, so the best place to find me is on AO3; I’m also active on Discord. I don’t mean to have a small social media footprint, but it’s kind of restful, actually.
What Am I Working on Right Now?
2024 is going to be a year of playing catch-up, both at the theatre and in my writing life.
My big goals this year have to do with finishing overdue incomplete work (like Flip It, Reverse It, which was due in December '23 and I finally completed and posted in mid-April) and finishing some of the WsIP I have on AO3. Here's the (rough) priority list:
Overdue works:
Marvel Trumps Hate 2021 fill
Trickety Boo Exchange (2020) fill (part 2)
Good Snowmens Exchange (2020) fill
Works due soon:
late May: GYWO discussion post posted 5/29
attempt to finish But Half a Fish for MerMay well, it looks like I won't make it for the end of May, but I'm still going to try to finish the last few chapters while working on other things
July: GYWO discussion post
early Fall: first Marvel Trumps Hate 2022 fill
early Fall: second Marvel Trumps Hate 2022 fill
possible third post for GYWO in Q4 2024
AO3 WsIP priority order:
But Half a Fish and The Ghost and Ms Fell
Happily Ever After
The Dragon of Avernus Manor and if thy feet be nimble and thy heart be light
The Serpent and the Pimpernel and the next stories in Ineffable Seattle and/or Marvelous Omens
Some unrelated one-shots may appear in the middle of all this, but I make no promises to timing, length, or fandom; I'm just going to try really hard to not start any new incomplete works on AO3 until I've cleared the backlog some.
My focus is still primarily on fanfic and work this year, but I am also trying to do more work with my original and nonfiction writing; hence my prepping a story for submission, and getting back into writing essays for GYWO. Depending on how the rest of the first half of the year goes, I may also be diving back into the Lesbian Space Pirates, but, after talking to an editor, it has been decided that at least the opening needs a complete rewrite, plus I need to rework the outline, and I know it will take backseat to my fandom work, just because fandom has a built-in audience, whereas I don't have any cheerleader readers for my original stuff. So it goes.
Spicy Content?
Yes, I write NSFW content (what’s just below “all the time, actually” on the scale of these things?), and while I do not post NSFW snippets to tumblr, I do consider this blog to be an Adult Space. I trust you all to be responsible humans and do with that as you see fit. I do put content warnings for common triggers in the tags, but I do not think that human bodies (including non-cis bodies) or human sexualities (including queer sexualities) are inherently dangerous, and I behave accordingly.
If you see one of my posts missing a trigger warning, do let me know, but be aware that if you come at me with “think of the children”, I will laugh you off of my blog, and then talk about you unkindly with my friends.
Can I Ask You About…?
Yes, probably! As long as you remember that I’m a human being (alas) with feelings (unfair), I’m pretty happy to talk about Fandom and Its History, about Being Queer, about Being Disabled, about Judaism, whatever. I’m available to sensitivity-read on questions of queerness (coming out young and in the ‘90s, living as a queer person in America, nonbinary and asexual identities, queer history), Judaism (primarily Reform and Conservative Judaism from lived experience, but I've also done a lot of research on my own), and disability (depression/anxiety/etc and hypermobility/chronic pain), though I prefer to work through mutuals in that regard (aka someone needs to vouch for you), and might someday set up a Ko-Fi if people actually start seeking me out for any of this. I also do editing work, but depending what it is and what it's for, I may need to charge for that, too. Alas, the theatre doesn't pay me except in show stipends, and I have to make money somehow (boo capitalism).
