05-10✨ HBD Shane Hollander!!!
I think a lot about how Shane and Ilya are dealing with a certain level of unreality at like…all times
The endless series of almost identical but not quite hotel rooms, rinks, locker rooms. The near constant slight jet lag. Not being sure what time zone you’re in. Turning the corner in a city and being hit with a “oh shoot, I thought there was a CVS here but that’s in San Jose.”
Their lives are objectively absurd and I think that hugely contributes to the compartmentalization of their sex. The expectation of “this will go on as long as we exist in this dream like state of being pro athletes and once we retire we will become real people and leave this behind” is totally rational
Does it fucking kill you too?
I'm not sure you're supposed to smoke here.
...That hope will be disappointed, and fail us, is not its negation but its condition of possibility. When the acute failures and dangers of the present (of "normal", "straight", "white", or "capitalist" time) threaten us, we turn to the utopian imaginary in order to activate queer and minoritarian ways of being in the world and being-together. We do so to survive the shattering experience of living within an impossible present, while charting the course for a new and different future. The frequent and even necessary disappointment of hope is due to an incommensurability: things do not line up; loved objects (whether persons, theories, or social movements) let us down. Theories about identities and politics frequently miss actually existing subjects in their complexity, messiness, and plurality. To paraphrase Muñoz's powerful concluding paragraph in "Hope in the Face of Heartbreak," however, this missed encounter, this incommensurability, far from disqualifying queer of color critique or cultural production, is instead the very condition--however blasted and painful it can sometimes feel--of our being-with others. Hope may not be commensurate to reality; our hopeful actions may not produce--may not ever produce once and for all--the hoped-for end. But this prizing of the incommensurate over the equivalent is a queer angle of vision, a queer ethics for living through the gaps between what we need and what we get, what we allow ourselves to want and what we can survive and transform in the now.

#myzine about the top three shanes i'd like to keep in my pocket with my trinkets
the concept of ilya rozanov and katya zamolodchikova meeting. yeah.
"Jacob [Tierney] was like, 'Great, great, great, great, great. Awesome. So, yeah, just to let you know, there's a whole fourth book where your character has a relentless love, will-they-won't-they with Kip, but he's heartbroken, forlorn, and it never really comes to fruition. So if you can put all of that into two syllables, that would be awesome.'"

so I had this idea in my head of a version of Shoon where he periodically transforms back and forth and in one transformation it's when Hayden is staying with them (and Hayden is also a part-time mouse). Shane wakes up back in human form with fuzzy memories and he can't find Hayden anywhere and he's running all over the house sobbing and hyperventilating thinking he ate his little buddy (1/2)
Ilya calms him down by going on Wikipedia and assuring Shane that loons don't eat mice and then they find Hayden sleeping in his dollhouse or whatever. it's all good BUT Ilya sees on the Wikipedia page for loons that pikes (the fish) are a common food source and so he makes a point of buying pikes for Shoon and also making constant jokes about it to Hayden (2/2)
i'm sorry i'm kind of stuck on the part where you called hayden a "part-time mouse" like it was a job
i like to think that sometimes when hayden and shane are in animal form, ilya holds mouse hayden up to loon shane and goes like "hey shane eat him. eat him" and hayden is just squeaking and shane's looking at ilya with unamused loon eyes
