Band of the Day: Hockeysmith
Another duo plunging into the vast depths of the ever-growing indie scene; Hockeysmith, consists of Annie & Georgie Hockeysmith. From Cornwall, UK, they're true to what British indie is presenting us with; dark, mysterious tracks full of soul-stirring vocals and lingering guitar riffs.
Debut single 'Now I Want To' (which you can listen to here) expresses a similarity to the likes of Wolf Alice and The Night VI however, it definitely has a Hockeysmith sound- a song you could almost get lost in, completely breathtaking.
Having recently supported the likes of SOHN; and releasing their debut single in vinyl format, the girls are definitely hard at work trying to get their following up. Although they're up against a lot of competition, Hockeysmith could be one to watch in 2014- with a few tracks under their belts, they're well on their way; I can't wait to hear more from the girls.
Band of the Day: Honeyblood
These fab girls are one of the latest bands to emerge in the indie-pop scene. Glasgow based duo, made up of Shona McVicer and Stina Marie Claire Tweeddale have been working hard to get their name out there; supporting the likes of Deap Vally and Palma Violets.
Their songs are jam packed with haunting vocals, effortless energy, glorious guitar riffs and an incredible sense of whether they are heading; to the top.
Recently appearing on BBC Radio 1's introducing; we can expect a lot from these girls in 2014. They've also released their debut single; 'Bud' which is definitely one of my favourite songs of 2013. They have also recently announced they have a full-length LP, almost ready to grace our ears with.
Have a listen to 'Bud' here.
Arctic Monkeys // AM
My New Years resolutions are: - listen to loads more cool music - do a lot more gig/band photography (if anyone can help me out with either, that would be great! Message me!)
Song of the day:
Ella Eyre - All About You
You may have heard her on Rudimental's track 'Waiting All Night' or Naughty Boy's track 'Think About It' however, Ella Eyre placed 2nd in BBC Radio 1's Sound of 2014 this morning.
This track was released just 4 hours ago, maybe a thank you to her fans and to BBC Radio 1 for getting her into the top 3! In my opinion she should have won it, but nevertheless, we are going to be hearing a lot from this wonderful voice.
Song of the day:
The Smiths - Pretty Girls Make Graves
I've always been a massive fan of The Smiths- endlessly praying for another tour (not that I think it will happen as Morrissey claims he has no interest in his former band). This song is my favourites, I'm not too sure why- Morrisseys vocals are so captivating and everything just seems to be perfect.
Happy new year!! Whatever you're planning to do tonight, have a listen to this incredible song by Banks- it will definitely get you in the mood.
I'll see you all in 2014! x
Seeing as it's Christmas Eve and I haven't posted for a while- enjoy this fabulous cover by brummy's Peace.
Merry Christmas!
10 Albums to Look Forward to in 2014
1. Peace
After releasing their debut album back in March 2013, Peace have already announced they are planning a quick follow up to 'In Love'. They played new song, 'Money' on their latest tour, suggesting they are already hard at work.
Peace - Follow Baby
2. Eagulls - 'Eagulls'
The Leeds based band are set to release their self-titled debut album in early March. The album will feature the bands hit single 'Nerve Endings' and recently released 'Tough Luck' and 'Opaque'.
Eagulls - Nerve Endings
3. Angel Haze - 'Dirty Gold'
Angel Haze released the lead single from her forthcoming debut album a few months back. She announced her album is set to drop in early 2014 - she told us not to expect a hip-hop album.
Angel Haze - Echelon (It's My Way)
4. Bombay Bicycle Club - 'So Long, See You Tomorrow'
Recently releasing 'Carry Me', the first single from their new album, BBC announced 'So Long, See You Tomorrow' is set to be released early 2014. The album follows their 2011 release 'A Different Kind of Fix' and throws Bombay Bicycle Club into a new dimension- playing with visuals such as their interactive video which reflects their 'Carry Me' artwork.
Bombay Bicycle Club - Carry Me
5. JAWS
Having released their Milkshake EP in early 2013, JAWS have been on about releasing an album. Recently playing new songs at their shows supporting Spector, it looks like they are trying hard to keep fans happy, and give them new material to mosh too. They recently covered Foo Fighters' single 'Everlong' after a spell of boredom hit their day.
JAWS - Everlong (Foo Fighters Cover)
6. Kanye West
One of our favourite rappers is already planning a follow up to his most recent album. He has announced a follow up to 'Yeezus' will appear at some point in 2014. Kanye West admits to constantly writing down philosophies and working on new material.
Kanye West - New Slaves
7. Sky Ferreira - 'I Will'
Sky Ferreira became an instant favourite after her single 'Everything Is Embarrassing' was released back in 2012. Currently dating DIIV's Zachary Cole Smith, she has recently had a lot of publicity. She tweeted back in April claiming her album was finished however, the release date has been pushed back to 2014.
Sky Ferreira - You're Not the One
8. Temples - 'Sun Structures'
Temples are set to released their debut album in February 2014. The tracklist includes their most popular work; 'Colour to Life' and 'Shelter Song' amongst new singles, including their recently released 'Mesmerise'. For me, Temples are one of the bands to watch in 2014.
Temples - Mesmerise
9. Thumpers - 'Galore'
Alt-pop band Thumpers have announced they will be releasing their debut album 'Galore' in 2014. Their album will include their incredible hits 'Sound of Screams' and 'Unkinder (A Tougher Love)' alongside 9 new tracks.
Thumpers - Sound of Screams
10. Wolf Alice
They've been releasing a lot of EP's over the past year or so, are we going to see a full length LP in 2014? Having recently supported Swim Deep, Wolf Alice have gained a lot of new fans, pleasing them with a short headline tour. Surely as one of the indie sounds of 2014, Wolf Alice will release a debut album to grace our ears?
Wolf Alice - Blush
Song of the day:
Ed Sheeran & Yelawolf // You Don't Know (For Fuck's Sake)
Been a big fan of Ed Sheeran ever since he started out. For me, this track is exactly what Ed Sheeran is about.
Raw. Brilliant. Alternative.
His album is good however, I think it sort of covers up his raw talent and plants a new, pop make-over on one of Britain's biggest artists.
Song of the day:
Troumaca // The Grace
One of the latest bands to emerge from Birmingham is Troumaca. However, if you expect the sounds of Peace, Swim Deep and Jaws to emerge, you'll find you're very wrong.
'The Grace' is the lead single from their recently released album; 'The Grace'. It's tropical vibes are backed up with one of my favourite videos from this year.
Troumaca bring a whole new dimension to the music scene that has involved in Birmingham. Their music drifts from pop to electronic, I guess with an indie vibe.
The lads currently don't have a massive fan base however, I think with time they will come one of the bands you'll love.
The wonderful Lizzy Plapinger from MS MR.
Shot by me.
A shot of Ben Howard I took back in 2012, I wish more than anything that I could do more gig photography and get in the photographers pit.
My video from when Bastille performed at O2 Academy, Liverpool back in February.
Song of the day:
Ella Eyre // Deeper
One of my favourite songs at the moment comes from the up and coming Ella Eyre. Having recently collaborated with Rudimental, Ella has been plunged into stardom.
Her debut song is cracking, her powerful vocals shown off at various points. Ella Eyre has also been nominated for 'Sound of 2014', which in my opinion, is well deserved.
'Deeper EP' is out on December 15th- for now, have a listen to the track.
Song of the day:
Superfood // Melting
One of the latest bands to emerge from Birmingham have put up their third single, set to be released on the 9th December.
Having being left hanging with their self-titles debut single 'Superfood' it's nice to finally see the four-piece catching up, and releasing new songs to tempt their fans into indulging in their almost psychedelic sounds.
