The fact that Aperture Science canonically has a gender-neutral, polyamory-friendly partnership policy isn't a joke about Cave Johnson being inexplicably pro-queer. It's because their corporate medical plan allows them to experiment on your spouse. More spouses means more test subjects. That's the joke.
Cave Johnson: patron saint of rainbow capitalism
"Hey-Cave here, so good news: For the entirety of June we're coloring all our gel for our gel-based testing rainbow. Bad news, it makes the gels completely indistinguishable from each other-So, make sure that's REPULSION gel you're jumping into, or else that rainbow's gonna have a lot more red."
Classic lines from Goodfellas (1990) dir. Martin Scorsese
I always thought these pictures were photoshopped but apparently a man in guangzhou china did indeed make a huge ass garden to cover up the fact he illegally added three more stories to his apartment
another illegal rooftop garden in beijing
and an illegal temple in shenzhen

There are so many unintended consequences to well-intentioned actions. It feels like a game you can’t win.
#CHIDI WAS RIGHT
The Good Place really went with making their new Point ‘there is no ethical consumption under capitalism’ and I respect that
And then went on to say “blaming individuals for all of this is absurd and evil, as is locking them up for punishment instead of rehabilitation” and I respect that
Also, “consequentialism is a fundamentally flawed branch of ethics”
“I got freaks NINE days out of the week — I CAN GET MORE.”
“….—only seven days in a week.”

Just finished Netflix's Is It Cake, Too? (season two of Is It Cake?) and one of the contestants freaking hand painted the Mona Lisa in under 10 hours and did I mention that it was also a cake?

Pretty sure Guinness doesn’t keep records on skin tone but if they did I think Khoudia Diop would be a close contender
The two of them actually did a photoshoot together
You literally feel God seeing them. I love that they are warm and cool toned. What a divine match!

I hate this place
Big brain move
but why. does a skate park exist. if the city doesn’t want skateboarders. this is not a walmart parking lot we’re talking about. this is not a thing that was designed for a purpose other than skateboarding that skateboarders encroached on like an invasive species. you are trying to deter loitering in a place where it should not be possible to loiter. it’s not like the sand was put there to stop homeless people from sleeping there. which is awful but I can at least comprehend cities doing it to benches and shit. the sand was specifically meant to deter skateboarders
you built a skate park. with money. presumably taxpayers paid for there to be a place specifically made for skateboarding. and then those same taxpayers paid to get those nasty skateboarders out of the big concrete bowls that are just there for show I guess
dogs are not allowed in the dog park
Oh I know the answer to this: skaters used to be mostly white. Now there are a lot of Black skaters.
Or, consider this, learn an actual skill that is needed and valued in society and you'll be paid muuuch more. If you work at Wendy's and it only took you 3 days of training to learn your job, you should be living with roommates, cooking at home, not getting pregnant, routinely setting money aside/investing, and establishing the self discipline to not touch it (as I've done all throughout my 20s living in expensive ass Los Angeles). The only people who post regressive comics like this are people who refuse to better themselves and refuse to save their money. The fact that the artist drew grown ass adults with suits n ties, and not one single 20yr old with multiple nose & lip rings is beyond comical. You're not going to be able to rent your own 1 bedroom apt as a Starbucks barista, and guillotine comics don't put you on the "moral" side of the debate.
I'm an EMT. I'm in training to be a paramedic. I currently can't afford to live by myself even if I wanted to in the locality I work in. Not much will change when I get my ACLS card. I can't leave this city, all of my roots are here. I will stay and organize with my union for better conditions and compensation for my labor. All people deserve not just bread, but roses too. If you think otherwise, pick yourself up by your bootstraps since you consider yourself more worthy than the people who serve the public, and forgo any sanitation, dining, healthcare, and manufacturing services. Without the working class, you would not have any pearls to clutch, you sheltered ingrate. You're not more equal than anyone else, swine.
To address this further:
-We need people to work in less desirable/unskilled jobs.
-We need people to have kids- ask Japan about how their rapidly ageing population is working out for them.
-There are an awful lot of adults in the UK(and I’m sure elsewhere) with what people would consider “proper” jobs, or indeed essential jobs, including but not limited to fire service/teachers/nurses/doctors etc, who are saying levels of pay are rapidly becoming too low to live on.
-Salaries that were viable or indeed good 10 years ago have not risen to match inflation. That’s why, btw, the comic shows office workers.
-But also, not everyone can work in a highly skilled niche field. They still deserve the chance to live a good, comfortable life.
-And again, we need people working in these jobs for society to function.
-No doubt you’ll say “if you don’t like it, leave to find somewhere with better working conditions” (I mean, withdrawing your labour permanently is actually a super leftist thing to do, but whatever) BUT here’s the thing, people are already doing that. People are leaving these jobs, and then staffing levels become low and the job becomes even harder and more stressful for the same money (or less in real terms).
-If we keep following this philosophy, I know in the UK we’ll end up with no teachers, no doctors, no nurses, no vets and so on.... I’m sure in other countries you will end up with no-one working in essential jobs too. So how will you cope then? At some point, your salary won’t stretch to paying everyone privately.
Honestly, I’m not that interested in someone’s idea of morality, these are just facts.
Not to mention that when you say "go and find a real job". Who do you expect should work at the Wendy's and Starbucks? Do you expect that only students should work there? Who do you think should operate them in weekday school hours? You NEED coffee shops, fast food restaurants, janitorial staff, and all those menial jobs that no one respects but we all need. And it's honestly either ignorant or cruel to not expect that they can make a living off of it.
I also just want to add on but the "only people who have specific, high paying jobs should have children" is a pretty blatant form of eugenics, even ignoring all of the other issues.
Consider- lack of universal health care, affordable child care, and robust social supports for young families is turning *reproduction* into a *class gate* and that's *deeply fucked up.*
"You're not gonna be able to rent your own 1br apartment as a Starbucks barista" ... ok consider this: you SHOULD be able to rent your own 1 br apartment as a Starbucks barista.
This mentality makes me FURIOUS.
Ignoring the fact that I have a first class academic degree, I won an award for my thesis (proving that by even the most snobbish and traditional metrics I'm intelligent and hard-working), and I've learned MULTIPLE skills and professions (including teaching and management) that are considered "useful and valuable" but haven't been able to pursue them for reasons that mostly boil down to "I burned myself out to the point of mental and physical health crises trying to train up in a new profession and also earn enough money to live by at the same time"
If you have this mentality, don't even think about setting foot into a fucking cocktail bar. Or a Starbucks. Or a restaurant. Or anywhere staffed by minimum wage workers.
I work in a very popular, very high quality, craft-focused cocktail bar. I have 10 years of experience in hospitality and 7 just purely in bar work. I have hundreds of cocktail recipes memorised and I can craft new ones on the spot based on flavour profiles people have given me and balancing ingredients in complimentary ways. I can remember orders of over 20 drinks that have been spoken out loud to me once in a loud, bright, and rowdy environment and then I can make them all perfectly and simultaneously through pure muscle memory sorting through the hundreds of bottles on the bar, calculating the overall cost in my head as I go. I'm trained in conflict de-escalation, in providing immediate response and advocacy for victims of harassment and assault, in alcohol licensing law (I hold a personal license that requires extra hours of training, examinations, and legal verification), i can perform day to day accounting tasks, manage, train and coordinate large teams, and accurately gauge somebody's intoxication levels in a 30-second interaction.
I make minimum wage. I have never earned more that £1 per hour over minimum wage. Even when I worked in bar management.
I'm a grown ass adult who supports myself and is highly trained and experienced and qualified in my profession, and I can't afford a one bed flat by myself.
If you think that people in minimum wage/hospitality/service roles don't deserve to make enough money to live on?? Do me a favour and never go to a fucking bar. Never have your little office night out at a cocktail joint and order round upon round of elaborate drinks that require in-depth training and skill to make. Never go to a place where the staff are not only responsible for the quality of what you're consuming, the cleanliness of the facilities you are using, but also for your safety, because these staff have a duty of care that is outlined and enshrined in the law and if they allow you to become too intoxicated the whole business could be shut down, that worker or the license holder for the premises could be fined or imprisoned. These people are trained and skilled in all sorts of essential behind-the-scenes things that you'd never even consider that make your night go smoothly, and they do it all on their feet for 12hr shifts with barely a single break in the middle to eat.
I'm highly skilled and highly trained and have devoted my time and energy and money into that training and building those skills. I created the day-to-day administrative infrastructure and trained and managed the staff for one of the busiest and most successful bars in my city while simultaneously making record sales on the bar (record sales in a record-earning bar).
I made 10p more per hour in that role than I do now as a cocktail bartender on minimum wage.
Yeah, I'm a 25-year-old with multiple nose and lip rings. Yeah I'm "just" a hospitality worker. But if you don't think the skills that people learn in hospitality jobs are "useful and valuable" do us all a favour and never go to a hotel, a restaurant, a coffee shop or a bar ever again.
Because I guarantee that you couldn't do what I do without years of training and experience and a resilience that you only learn from dealing with people degrading your profession day in and day out for the best part of a decade and treating you like dog shit while still demanding the product of your skill and dedication to your craft. I'd fucking love to see you try.
Just got a baffling survey from Google rewards
google dont you dare email me unless there’s a fucking BREAKTHROUGH in SAUCE
“Culture war trauma” maybe you’re just a fucking creep.
“I’ve worked myself up into a cultural frenzy to the point where I MUST investigate random strangers I see on TV to figure out what their genitals look like. I’m the one being normal here.” Honestly this would be somehow LESS creepy if they were doing it for sex reasons.
Was I the one scrolling this post like "surely this is going to be the last one"
