we are in a media literacy crisis
friendly reminder that characters don't need to be saints to be entertaining. and telling a story does not mean endorsement. art does not need to be all about morally good people.
IDK if this was meant as hyperbole but it's literally true:
Adult literacy is low.
Child literacy is low.
Information literacy has shifted dramatically in the last decade, but reputable information sources like research journals and factual news reporting have been unable to keep pace.
We are genuinely in a crisis of media literacy, with ever fewer genuinely factual resources available in the style and language used by contemporary audiences.
It may sound condescending, but we genuinely need to remind people, or worse, explain to them for the first time that art is not evidence of real world behaviour.
So, thank you, for this reminder. Genuinely.
You're correct:
Art does not need to feature exclusively morally pure characters. Art is not proof of the creator's secret, violent desires.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW
Tina Bell: frontwoman of the band Bam Bam, often called the Godmother of grunge because of its influence. Racism within the scene has led to her influence being pretty extensively erased but her bandmate and lifelong friend Scotty Buttocks has been working hard to counteract that by doing press and preserving their music here. Kurt fucking Cobain was their roadie
Betty Davis: 70s funk rock legend who just recently passed away. Incredibly unique performer that was way ahead of her time. Not to be confused with Bette Davis.
Sistah Grrrl Riots: A black punk collective put together in response to alienation and racism in the 90s punk and riot grrrl scenes. Organized by legends Tamar-Kali Brown, Honeychild Coleman, Maya Glick, and Simi Stone. You can read more about sistah grrrl in this article.
Ronnie Spector: Frontwoman of the Ronettes and rock n roll pioneer. Black girl groups were a huge influence on the sound of Rock n Roll as we know it from The Beatles to Led Zepplin to the Rolling Stones. She recently passed but her autobiography came out last year and it's worth the read.

So no affirmative action, no discrimination protections for same-sex couples, AND no debt forgiveness? This sucks

This court fucking sucks.
Not much we can do right now for college applicants of color, indebted graduates, or lgbt people facing discrimination from businesses, but we CAN donate to the Navajo water project https://www.navajowaterproject.org/

happy PRIDE i’m here i’m queer and i believe the land should be given back to the proper indigenous stewards.
Non-Natives reblogging this are great and wonderful
Please remember that "land back" does not mean "indigenous people are mystical elves with innate epigenetic wisdom of land stewardship and they don't belong in big cities," nor does it mean "non-indigenous people can't be farmers." What it DOES mean is that "non-indigenous farmers should be paying the equivalent of property taxes to the native governments their land was stolen from." It means, "there's a great deal of indigenous scholarship on sustainable agricultural practices that farmers should be taking into account, because indigenous agriculture was more advanced than European agriculture at the time Europe invaded the Americas and western agriculture *still* hasn't caught up in terms of figuring out how to produce equivalently high crop yields without compromising the ecosystem." It means, "non-indigenous farmers should be in an intellectual discourse with indigenous agricultural scientists and indigenous peoples that still do traditional farming, figuring how to repair the damage western farming practices have done to the ecosystem."
It also means that indigenous peoples should regain the right to sustain themselves on the land according to the practices they want, and they should have free reign to perform their cultural practices and protect their holy sites, as opposed to the current model where if they try to honor their dead on public lands they get violently removed.

February is Black History Month! Here are just a few Black Queer People who dedicated their lives to making the world a better place. Black history month is about remembering all the types of Black people who helped further the progress of justice. Thank you to all of those who paved the way.
Bayard Rustin (1912-1987)
A lot of times noted as the man that Homophobia Erased from History. His impact is not illustrated in a lot of history books, Bayard Rustin became most recognized for his work for the civil rights movement. Bayard Rustin was the lead organizer of the March on Washington, and ultimately was one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s right hand men. From Marching on Washington, to his work in the Black Power movement, to being imprisoned for being in a relationship with a man and his advocation of the advancement for LGBTQA people, Bayard Rustin was a force to be reckoned with. Although he put so much of his time and effort into making the world a better place, his presence has been erased in some of the light of the civil rights movement because at the time people thought him being gay would hinder the advancement of black people.
Angela Davis (Born in 1944)
Angela Davis is a loved political activist, author, scholar, and professor. Davis contributed a lot to the Black Panther Party and worked hard for the advancement in the Civil Rights Movement. Davis was also very involved in Prisoners rights, and feminist theory (and where Women of color fit into mainstream white feminism). She also fought hard for the advancement of LGBTQA rights. Overall Angela Davis is a queer women of color whose list of activism efforts goes on and on. Angela Davis did and continues to spread her efforts to all types of oppression and injustices.
Marsha P. Johnson (1944-1992)
Marsha P. Johnson was a Black Trans Woman whose efforts for the queer community and overall essence of love and self acceptance in the face of ridicule, touched the hearts of many. Marsha P. Johnson was a pivotal part of the Stonewall Riots, being at the epicenter of it all, (which isn’t always illustrated). She was noted as the person who “really started it all”. The stonewall riots really sparked queer and especially trans activism, but also essentially birthed what we now know as the Pride Parades. Another reason to remember to not erase the “T” in LGBTQA rights.
Don't buy these they ain't by us
I just want to thank wakanda forever for reigniting my violent hatred for the spanish empire.
and while we're on the subject of colonization: everyone's always talking about the british but let's not forget the spanish, french, portuguese, dutch, and belgians also fucked up multiple continents, wiped out multiple cultures and languages, and enslaved natives all over the world.
Barbara Beese, born January 2, 1946
Writer and former member of the British Black Panthers, Barbara is known for her activism and as one of the activists on trial in the Mangrove Nine case. (She is one of the two surviving members of the Mangrove Nine).
Barbara was recently portrayed by Rochenda Sandall in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe film series.

Every discussion I've seen on ai art fucking sucks
No you can't trademark an art style but that doesn't make it morally or ethically correct to essentially copy someone else's work
No ai art isn't making a collage of others works, it's using various images as a kind of inspiration the same way most real artists do, but the difference is that a real life person does that throughout a lifetime of honing their craft. A program does that not out of reverence for fellow artists but because it produces mass marketable results
Yes ai art can become a great boon for those with less ability to churn out some simple looking concepts for pieces, but that's a demand that was already filled the commission market in art
The tools of ai art are largely open source, but that only remains that way until larger servers or computing power is required. It's a tech fad and it'll eventually get bought up by people that'll quickly monetize it.
Time and time again we have tech ppl bent on doing something not because it proves useful but simply because they can, and they never once consider the implications of what could come from it. Right now it's ai art and they overlooked the ramifications it could have on a profession that is largely underpaid and underappreciated. Just last month it was still NFTs and how art ownership operates. Before then it was deepfakes and the debate on if a person, celebrity or not, even gets to own their own visage. There was ai upscaling images and how it ignored the racial biases in the original programmers. The vocal ai programs that could emulate a person's voice without any real permission given. The hologram technology used to parade Tupac on stage years after his death. The debate on artistic tools always comes after the damage is done and nothing ever really comes from it.
incredible
