if you think for even just a second how fucking crazy bonkers it is that women are so frequently kept from being protagonists or important or fully realized characters when its like. That is literally 50% of the world population. Half of all people (more or less. hopefully more as time marches on!) are women. And you look at media and think about how many protagonists are men and their best friends are men and the ensemble cast is 80-100% men and the fandoms are about men and the romances are about men. well. the double standard of what women characters have to do to be considered remotely interesting by fandom is actually insane. you will legit have a woman with super hot character design, the most intriguing backstory, and/or incredible drive and skill--all things that would get people writing books worth of fanfic and meta for men. but this will be utterly ignored if a man in her vicinity is, like, funny once

My first big fandom was Dragon Booster. We hung out on a reletively well-made forum (it helped that one of the fans helping run it was also working on the eventually-never-realized toyline and had a lot of experience in organizing things).

The older fans had a lot to teach us.

Don't trust unverified spoilers. People can and will say anything on the internet.

Other than suggesting a beta reader and mentioning formatting issues, unsolicited criticism of fanfics is generally frowned on. You're reading free stuff someone put their heart into. Be kind

This was the Era of the Mary Sue Litmus Test. Older fans helped explain to us why that was bullshit and also that Dragon Booster's main character scored WAY high on it himself (Db had issues with "hero gets random power we never mention again" and "hero was right even though it makes no sense that he was")

People are going to ship everything under the sun. Deal with it or ignore it.

Personal insults = suspension or ban

People banned or suspended may come back under a different account, be wary. (we had one jerk who did this and we knew it was them because they could NOT stop themselves from posting in colored text for over 90% of their posts. they thought changing the color would be enough to fool us). This also taught us about "hey, someone might run multiple accounts, keep that in mind if it involves drama"

One of the oldest fans legit had to deal with someone in a prior fandom who'd pretended to be a sick cancer patient and OUTRIGHT DIE. and then make a new account to watch people react to their "death." People can be sick fucks online and they wanted us fandom newbies to be prepared for people to go for emotional manipulation for their own gratification

Don't Like = Don't Read

This, among other things, helped me survive some of the biggest flamewars of the Avatar the Last Airbender and Naruto fandoms. (honestly given how active I was in it I'm very confused how I never wandered into the HP fandom's wars, or even noticed them beyond confusion at Ron haters).
