Janufalak Akarshan (kneecap contraction) is the fifth practice in the #Pawanmuktasana I Series. This series of joint movements help with rheumatism, arthritis, high blood pressure and with alleviating #vata imbalance. The entire series moves through all the major joints in the body and is a wonderful way to calm your nervous system. In asana, can you use your mind to analyze your body the way an art historian would analyze an old master painting? Can you develop a vocabulary of sensations to describe and categorize what your body is experiencing at this very moment? Do you have the patience to keep looking when it gets ‘boring’? Do have enough interest to keep track of those sensations and remember them from one time to the next? What do you expect when you practice yoga? I would like to suggest that the less you expect, the more space you leave for the unexpected to happen. Mentally you leave a wide open and generously tilled field for the practice to sprout whatever it has to offer. Easier said than done? Yes, absolutely. Why even practice if you don’t have something in mind you hope to gain? Mandukasana stretches the muscles of the groin and pelvis. But you already knew that… What else does this pose do? It takes our awareness and, in no subtle manner, pulls it to the lower abdomen, groin, hips and pelvis. It pulls it to where we hold our stuff together. Our heart rates may vary, our breath may become shallow, but only in the most extreme circumstances do we actually loose control of our bowels. As it relates to control, that is our innermost core. And going into a pose that will not cease to bring your attention to this bastion of control is uncomfortable. The things that go on here are hidden and we’re not supposed to shine a light on them. Anjali mudra is a mudra of devotion and recognition of the divine, whether that is in the person you’re greeting or in whatever you may be praying, contemplating, or meditating on. It also brings together and balances the feminine (left hand - mother, sister) and masculine (right hand - father, brother) connections in our lives. To me it holds within a simple gesture every possibility. The palms are touching but there is still space there. Enough for an entire universe of potentiality. There is an exchange among opposites but equals. The recognition of similarity in difference.
